Book Synopsis Caroline and Papa by : Ronald B. Schram
Download or read book Caroline and Papa written by Ronald B. Schram and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I had the career of a lifetime. I was a teacher. I began my teaching career believing that one person could make a difference, and throughout the years, I never lost sight of that conviction. Teaching connected me to my students in ways quite humorous, as well as heart breaking. I hope the reader laughs a lot and cries only a little, while walking in my footsteps as an educator. Laugh with me as you read about Fred, the crusty cockroach we set free to find his wife and eighty-seven children. In addition, there is always my favorite story about the scary monster under the bed holding a student's homework hostage. I fed a rooster and his hens bread crumbs for breakfast each morning, until they tried to follow me, in single file, into the school board building one day. Some difficult students in summer school mistakenly believed my black patent leather belt to be a black belt in Karate. Who was I to tell them differently? Coming right on top of the laughs were the times I went home to cry. I remember the student, new to our school, who went home one evening and hung himself, his cries for help coming too late. I remember with equal sadness, the foster child we sponsored in Kenya who died because help did not reach him in time. Closer to home was the overage student who was shot and killed while he participated in a home invasion, just days after he finished summer school. Outside factors reached inside our classroom as well, reeking havoc with the emotions of both the children and me. The disastrous space shuttle, with the teacher on board, happened before our very eyes; while the greatest tragedy of all was the destruction of the twin towers on 9/11. These stories and many more comprise my educational career, and although there was no easy button, I would do it all over again. I was a teacher.

Book excerpt: Eleven-year-old Claude Kinkade considers himself an orphan of sorts. His father, Major Blake Kinkade, died in the Gulf War, 1991. Now single, Claudes mother Daisy, moves to Las Vegas to pursue a singing career, leaving Claude with relatives on a Pennsylvania farm. In Pennsylvania, Claude meets his illustrious cousin, Nathean Summers, a former child actor and television star. Nathe first appeared before the cameras in 1954 at age eight. His meteoric rise toward stardom sputtered; by the late 1960s his films were forgotten. After a turbulent career in publishing, he returns to the family farm to recover remnants of his boyhood and begin life anew in Summers Run. Claudes and Nathes lives entwine as they forge their futures, and together, they form a Little League team for the farm boys of the township. Soon they encounter Standing Ovation, the legendary bull of the neighborhood; Parsimonious Murphy, the reluctant recluse; and Tim Hathaway, the deaf orphan who wants to shine in center field. Claude thrives on his aunt's farm, taking on chores, responsibilities, and "making a hand" around the place. However, Claude's mother expects Claude to move to Nevada to be with her and her parents, now retired from the USAF. Whose wisdom will decide his future? The story of Claude and Nathe depicts the dreams and realities of coaching and parenting along the back roads of rural America and especially Summers Run.

Book Synopsis Twice-Rescued Child by : Thomas Graumann
Download or read book Twice-Rescued Child written by Thomas Graumann and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2019-10-17 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aged eight, Thomas Graumann excitedly boarded a train in Prague, Czechoslovakia, to embark on what he believed was a three-month holiday. “Go to Britain, learn English, and when the Germans leave, you can come home again,” his mother assured him. Thomas carried two suitcases and a bag of food. At the time he knew his country had been taken over by the Germans and now was under Nazi control. That was the last he would see of his mother and most of his Jewish family, who died in concentration camps. He had also never heard of Nicholas Winton, the hero who saved 669 children (Thomas was one of the last, #652), transporting them from Czechoslovakia to the UK to save their lives. This was Thomas’ first rescue, aboard what became known as the Kindertransport. His second came a year later when an evangelist from the Scottish village he was taken to for safety shared the good news of Jesus Christ with him. Saying a prayer on bent knee, Thomas’ soul was rescued, and he soon dedicated himself to missionary service, which he fulfilled as an adult in the Philippines, eventually moving to the U.S. But his missionary zeal returned after the fall of Communism—and the return of his grandmother’s property to his family. Both actions ushered in a way for him to return to the Czech Republic. The former rescued child was now free to travel throughout his homeland, speaking in schools of how he was rescued ... not once, but twice.

Book Synopsis Between Two Worlds by : Alan Hidalgo
Download or read book Between Two Worlds written by Alan Hidalgo and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world becomes increasingly complex, young people are confronted with greater challenges and higher expectations. They are hurled into an age of technology where they are given instant access to new information at a startling rate. This abundance of knowledge is seldom met with the wisdom and virtue necessary to navigate the intricate aspects of life. Thus, in Between Two Worlds, Alan Hidalgo presents a multicultural collection of ten novels tailored for young adults that abound with timeless truths that will never fade. In this unique anthology, Hidalgo seeks to inspire others to seek a life of purpose and meaning by offering profound insights into human behavior. Insights which guide multiculturalism not as an ideology where all cultural aspects must be accepted and approved, but instead which lead to universal truths that result in a broader worldview, enabling readers to openly and objectively perceive both the beauty and the ugliness found in all nationalities. Each of the ten novels contains an intriguing plot that brings the reader face-to-face with a diverse collection of fictional characters as they search for identity, honesty, and courage amidst a world often characterized by confusion, deceit, and fear. The Between Two Worlds Anthology is a multilingual literary work distinguished by its realistic fiction and life relevance. It is also the foundational text for the classroom resources Between Two Worlds Student Workbook and Between Two Worlds Instructor Manual, which are ideal for secondary and postsecondary educational levels.
