Book Synopsis The Marketing of Children’s Toys by : Rebecca C. Hains
Download or read book The Marketing of Children’s Toys written by Rebecca C. Hains and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers rich critical perspectives on the marketing of a variety of toys, brands, and product categories. Topics include marketing undertaken by specific children’s toy brands such as American Girl, Barbie, Disney, GoldieBlox, Fisher-Price, and LEGO, and marketing trends characterizing broader toy categories such as on-trend grotesque toys; toy firearms; minimalist toys; toyetics; toys meant to offer diverse representation; STEM toys; and unboxing videos. Toy marketing warrants a sustained scholarly critique because of toys’ cultural significance and their roles in children’s lives, as well as the industry’s economic importance. Discourses surrounding toys—including who certain toys are meant for and what various toys and brands can signify about their owners’ identities—have implications for our understandings of adults’ expectations of children and of broader societal norms into which children are being socialized.
Book Synopsis The Music of James Tenney by : Robert Wannamaker
Download or read book The Music of James Tenney written by Robert Wannamaker and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A work-by-work guide to the composer's groundbreaking music Robert Wannamaker's monumental two-volume study explores the influential music and ideas of American composer, theorist, writer, performer, and educator James Tenney. Delving into the whole of Tenney's far-ranging oeuvre, Wannamaker offers close, aurally grounded analyses of works linked to the artist's revolutionary theories of musical form, timbre, and harmonic perception. Written as a reference work, Volume 2, A Handbook to the Pieces, presents detailed entries on Tenney's significant post-1959 experimental works (excepting pieces covered in volume 1). Wannamaker includes technical information, an analysis of intentions and goals, graphs and musical examples, historical and biographical context, and thoughts from Tenney and others on specific works. Throughout, he discusses the striking compositional ideas found in Tenney's music and, where appropriate, traces an idea's appearance from one piece to the next to reveal the evolution of the composer's art and thought. A landmark in experimental music scholarship, The Music of James Tenney is a first-of-its-kind consideration of the experimental music titan and his work.

Download or read book Brother of the Cheyennes written by Max Brand and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rusty Sabin was born to white parents but brought up by the Cheyenne Indians, who named the redheaded boy Red Hawk. His ability to heal the sick and to make strange magic is widely honored throughout the tribe. But in his twenties, Red Hawk sets out to take his place among white people. When Rusty and his stallion White Horse are nearly at the frontier post of Fort Marston, the river boat he’s riding is grounded, and a man called Bill Tenney comes to his rescue. Rusty doesn’t know much about the white man’s ways—especially a white man like Bill Tenney, a thief and a fugitive. Tenney is only interested in one thing—Rusty’s white stallion, considered sacred among the Cheyennes. Meanwhile Major Marston is determined to come between Rusty and his sweetheart, Maisry, and the Cheyennes do all they can to compel Rusty to return to his tribe. First serialized in 1934, Brothers of the Cheyennes—the second installment of the Rusty Sabin trilogy—cemented Max Brand’s reputation as one of the most exciting and talented writers working in the Western genre. To this day, Rusty Sabin remains an indelible American character, caught between two worlds and simply trying to do the right thing.

Book Synopsis The Romance of K'tut Tantri and Indonesia by : Timothy Lindsey
Download or read book The Romance of K'tut Tantri and Indonesia written by Timothy Lindsey and published by Equinox Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historiographic study of K'tut Tantri - alias Vannen Walker, the journalist from the Isle of Man; Muriel Pearson, the unhappy wife; and Surabaya Sue, the notorious revolutionary - compares her romantic and colorful autobiography, Revolt in Paradise, with other versions of her past, including those of her fellow Bali colonists and her revolutionary comrades, as well as her foes, the Dutch, and various intelligence organizations. These alternatives accounts of her past question the image of K'tut Tantri as hero, portraying her instead as dishonest, unstable, egotistical, and immoral. Such criticisms have overshadowed proper recognition of her role in the development of modern Indonesia, both as a bohemian hotelier in between-wars Bali and later as propaganda broadcaster and adviser to Indonesian revolutionary leaders including Soekarno, Sutomo, and Syarifuddin. Focusing on the nature of biography and autobiography, this book analyses K'tut Tantri's self-defeating battle to use history - in text and film script - to define her identity and reappropriate her past. An examination of the use of ideas of "truth" and "fiction" in understanding the past leads to broader consideration of the nature of history and its uses. Finally, an attempt is made to reconcile the deconstruction of K'tut Tantri's autobiography with both an acceptance of the validity of "alternative" historical genres and an acceptance of the problems inherent in writing a history of a living person. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Timothy Lindsey is Professor of Law, Director of the Asian Law Centre, Director of the Centre for Islamic Law and Society and Federation Fellow in the Law School at the University of Melbourne.

Book excerpt: Major Arthur Marston had marked Rusty Sabin as his enemy. The red-haired white leader of the Cheyennes owned White Horse, the great stallion, and he had won the love of Maisry Lester. The prettiest girl and the swiftest horse on the plains—these the Major thought should belong to him, not to Rusty, the man the Indians called Red Hawk. Then Rusty forced him to release a prisoner, a thief who had once saved Rusty’s life. Enraged by this humiliation, Marston led his troops out across the prairie, determined to destroy his enemy. And so the stage was set for a showdown between the two men—Marston, the treacherous Indian fighter who swore he would write his name in Cheyenne blood, and Red Hawk, the adopted son of a Cheyenne chief.
