Book Synopsis Appalachians and Race by : John C. Inscoe
Download or read book Appalachians and Race written by John C. Inscoe and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2001-12-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Americans have had a profound impact on the economy, culture, and social landscape of southern Appalachia but only after a surge of study in the last two decades have their contributions been recognized by white culture. Appalachians and Race brings together 18 essays on the black experience in the mountain South in the nineteenth century. These essays provide a broad and diverse sampling of the best work on race relations in this region. The contributors consider a variety of topics: black migration into and out of the region, educational and religious missions directed at African Americans, the musical influences of interracial contacts, the political activism of blacks during reconstruction and beyond, the racial attitudes of white highlanders, and much more. Drawing from the particulars of southern mountain experiences, this collection brings together important studies of the dynamics of race not only within the region, but throughout the South and the nation over the course of the turbulent nineteenth century.

Book Synopsis The History of Black Business in America by : Juliet E. K. Walker
Download or read book The History of Black Business in America written by Juliet E. K. Walker and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging study Stephen Foster explores Puritanism in England and America from its roots in the Elizabethan era to the end of the seventeenth century. Focusing on Puritanism as a cultural and political phenomenon as well as a religious movement, Foster addresses parallel developments on both sides of the Atlantic and firmly embeds New England Puritanism within its English context. He provides not only an elaborate critque of current interpretations of Puritan ideology but also an original and insightful portrayal of its dynamism. According to Foster, Puritanism represented a loose and incomplete alliance of progressive Protestants, lay and clerical, aristocratic and humble, who never decided whether they were the vanguard or the remnant. Indeed, in Foster's analysis, changes in New England Puritanism after the first decades of settlement did not indicate secularization and decline but instead were part of a pattern of change, conflict, and accomodation that had begun in England. He views the Puritans' own claims of declension as partisan propositions in an internal controversy as old as the Puritan movement itself. The result of these stresses and adaptations, he argues, was continued vitality in American Puritanism during the second half of the seventeenth century. Foster draws insights from a broad range of souces in England and America, including sermons, diaries, spiritual autobiographies, and colony, town, and court records. Moreover, his presentation of the history of the English and American Puritan movements in tandem brings out the fatal flaws of the former as well as the modest but essential strengths of the latter.

This series of books attempts to identify all the Confederate soldiers who enlisted in organizations from the Blount County area, along with those who moved to Blount County after the Civil War. Book Synopsis Black Property Owners in the South, 1790-1915 by : Loren Schweninger
Download or read book Black Property Owners in the South, 1790-1915 written by Loren Schweninger and published by Urbana : University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The significance of this study transcends the statistical and biographical data on property holders. The how much, and where, and when tell only part of the story, although the evidence strongly suggests that in their determination to secure an economic stake, tens of thousands of blacks -- far from being landless peasants -- made impressive gains in their efforts to acquire land and personal holdings. Its importance lies in a fuller appreciation of American values and their impact on the lives of a people torn from their native land and thrust into an alien, sometimes hostile, environment. By focusing on propertied blacks themselves -- their values, attitudes, ideals, their relations with whites -- and by examining those who rose to the top of the economic ladder, as well as those who aspired to do so but failed, we can perhaps better comprehend the ambiguous tension between race consciousness and the strong impulse of so many blacks to 'integrate' themselves into American civilization" -- p. 5
