Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tendencies in Modern American Poetry I wish I had space to consider all the men and women whose work has aided to make this movement Vigorous and important. But that must be left to future literary historians. Still, it is with regret that I pass by the work Of Mr. Louis Untermeyer and Mr. James Oppenheim, of Mr. Ezra Pound and Mr. Vachel Lindsay, of Mr. William Rose Benet and Mrs. Eunice Tietjens, and others as well, but the main tendencies of which they are a part have been considered under other names. It is true that at a first glance Mr. Lindsay does not seem to fall very readily into any Of these groups, but I think a closer attention will find him to be rather popularizing the second stage of the movement than heading a completely new tendency of his own. As to those poets who still cling to an Older order, of course, in such a volume as this, their work can find no place however excellent it may be in itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern American Poetry: An Introduction Many, though not all of the poets that 'have succeeded Whitman have found a fresh, living and vigorous poetry in a world of honest and sometimes harsh reality. They respond to the spirit of their times. The singer to-day writes about things unknown to the poet of yesterday. Not only has his view been changed, his vision has wid ened. He can employ any incident, any subject, instead of being restricted to legendary, classical or traditionally poetic themes. In learning to distinguish real beauty from mere prettiness, he is expressing the deepest aspects of life and, in so doing, he is recording not, as has been charged, more truth than poetry but more truth and poetry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary American poetry has plenty to offer new readers, and plenty more for those who already follow it. Yet its difficulty—and sheer variety—leaves many readers puzzled or overwhelmed. The critic, scholar, and poet Stephanie Burt sets out to help. Beginning in the early 1980s, where critical consensus ends, Burt canvasses American poetry of the past four decades, from the headline-making urgency of Claudia Rankine’s Citizen to the stark pathos of Louise Glück, the limitless energy of Juan Felipe Herrera, and the erotic provocations of D. A. Powell. The Poem Is You: Sixty Contemporary American Poems and How to Read Them is a guide to the diverse magnificences of American poetry today. It presents a wide range of poems selected by Burt for this volume, each accompanied by an original essay explaining how a given poem works, why it matters, and how the poem speaks to other parts of art and culture. Included here are some classroom classics (by Ashbery, Komunyakaa, Hass), less famous poems by very famous poets (Glück, Kay Ryan), and poems by prizewinning poets near the start of their careers (such as Brandon Som), and by others who are not—or not yet—well known. The Poem Is You will appeal to poets, teachers, and students, but it is intended especially for readers who want to learn more about contemporary American poetry but who have not known where or how to start. It describes what American poets have fashioned for one another, and what they can give us today.

Book excerpt: The essays collected in this volume survey the major works of modern American poetry, from magnificent epics like Hart Crane's "The Bridge" and Wallace Stevens's "Auroras of Aurmn," to such central lyrics as Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and Maranne Moore's "Poetry." the complexity of modern American poetry has demanded appreciation and analysis of an especially high order, and the list of critics included here makes up a veritable all-star team of close readers, from Kenneth Burke to Helen Vendler, from Richard Poirier to David Bromwich.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Whitman to Sandburg in American Poetry: A Critical Survey Though none of the other poets approach him in size or comprehensiveness, many of them are none the less greatly significant. Nationalism, cosmopol itan influences in art and politics, a varying natural ism and mysticism, futilitarianism, and a new and abounding T1tan1sm, are some of the marks of the later bards. Folk poetry, too, with its rude action, domestic sentiments, and humor is scarcely less sig nificant of the divine average and its moods.
