It is a play of strong passions, of absorbing human interest. But its indescribable charm is derived from the shifting effects of Nature's scenery no less than from the play and interplay of human action. Before, therefore, we embark upon the story, let us, briefly and hurriedly, survey the scene of it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But you must make allowances. You must remember it is ten years Since I have seen anyone from the old place; and letters never tell everything. I'll do my best, though, to make up for having bored you! And he did! The very next morning Murray was roused soon after Six o'clock, and requested to be ready at seven for a visit to the Shway Dagon Pagoda, a famous temple, which attracts good Buddhists to Rangoon from all parts of Asia. He needed no second bidding. He had heard of this pagoda before he left home, and the glimpses he had caught of it since his arrival in Rangoon made him more anxious than ever to visit it. Seven o'clock accordingly found the two friends driving to the place; and they spent an hour pleasantly enough in admiring the barbaric splendours of the ancient building. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yachow and Burma: The Escape, the Return Sze-Chuen is the westernmost province of China, bordering on Tibet. The American Baptist mission in this province was opened by Rev. Wm. M. Upcraft, who had traveled extensively through Central China distributing the word of God. He encountered in this work many dangers - once, like Paul, being stoned and left for dead outside the city walls. The mission was begun in 1889, with the station at Sui fu. Kiating and Yachow were opened later. In 1893 Mr. Upcraft visited many churches in this country and secured reinforcements for the West China mission. Just following the Japanese-Chinese war, and possibly in some remote way connected with that war, uprisings against foreigners began in various parts of China in the early summer of 1895. At Kucheng, a number of missionaries, eight or more, were killed. The missionaries were not hated on account of their religion, but simply as foreigners. The literati and official classes stirred up the credulous mob. Our missionaries were all driven out of West China. Some came East, but Mr. Upcraft and Mr. Openshaw abode still on the eastern edge of Sze-Chuen, and after a visit to the mission, made their way through Tonkin and around by sea to Burma. They have since left Burma, and by the time this book comes into the readers' hands, they will doubtless be back again in West China and once more at work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Burma, Vol. 1 of 2: Past and Present With Personal Reminiscences of the Country Tms work is written much in the form of an autobiography, and a preface, therefore, is hardly necessary; because, as the author writes principally in the first person, he explains as he goes along what otherwise would have been expressed in a preface. A few preliminary remarks, however, appear somewhat desirable, not by way of preface, but of apology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Burman cannot conceive of a religion without a Defender of the Faith- a king who appoints and rules the Buddhist hierarchy. The extinction of the monarchy left the nation, according to the people's notions, without a religion. We have overthrown the king and destroyed all traces of the kingly rule. Naturally they look upon this as the destruction of their nationality. Whether we have acted Wisely history will decide. The step has, however, been taken, and we dare not now go back. We have to govern a turbulent people inhabiting a vast territory of hills and plains, forests, jungle, and swamp, impassable to troops during more than half the year. Vigour, tact, and skill are much wanted in the administration.* But vigour. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
