Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Days Abroad This narrative grew out of a few letters relat ing the writer's pleasant experiences last August, on a short trip abroad for recreation and rest. Several months are not now required for such a journey. One may see in a week more than was possible in a month's time, half a century ago, and enjoy it fully if the mind is passive, and the purpose not simply to attempt how much may be accomplished in a short space. These sketches the writer hopes may help others whose recreation intervals are short to as thorough enjoyment as he obtained from this trip. New people and customs when mingled with the asso ciations of a vivid past from which all our present life has come, give an agreeable and healthful stimulus to the fancies which carry us out of, and away from the daily routine of habit and cares. New Hampshire, on the afternoon of January 27th for Boston and, two days later - January 29, 1910 - we sailed from that port on the S. S. Cretic, White Star Line, for Naples. It was our first trip abroad, and we were all filled with excitement over the novel experience. After the excitement of getting on shipboard and being located in our various state-rooms, the next thing that interested us most was getting our mail. I was, indeed, most fortunate; for my steamer letters numbered twenty-one and, by proxy, I had with me every member of my family, as well as letters from many friends and others who had sent us beautiful flowers, books and boxes of candy, to enjoy, if conditions permitted, during our voyage. Our first really thrilling experience occurred just after boarding the steamer. Little William Bradley, in his desire to explore the steamer, had wandered off and completely disappeared from us all, and no one knew where he was. Pandemonium reigned and our consternation was indeed great; for any moment our steamer was ready to sail, and we did not know whether the little fellow was on shipboard or not. I was so afraid he had wandered off the boat in the confusion of so great a crowd. We were all about frantic, and each one started off in a different direction to search for our missing boy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Red-Letter Days Abroad Alcantara, revealed to us in the illustration, spanning the glittering Tagus in a single arch. Near this point formerly lived that lovely girl whose charms were destined to overthrow the Gothic empire in Spain. The last of the Gothic kings who sat upon the throne of Toledo was Roderick, the shameless traitor to his friend, the base betrayer of the innocent maiden intrusted to his care. But, solicited by the father of the injured girl, on came the Moors in their career of conquest; to meet whom Roderick went forth in a chariot of ivory, and dressed in gold and purple, but was destined, despite all this mag nificence, to encounter ignominious defeat and death on the banks of Guadalquivir, where the fate of the Goths in Spain was sealed, and their power smitten to the earth by the resistless Moors. If you are not tired of Toledo tales, let me tell you another. J ust beyond this bridge is a little church called Christ of the Valley. Within it is a crucifix, decorated, as usual in Spain, with real hair. This has a most singular history. The figure of Christ, which is of life size, has only one hand nailed to the cross; the other is stretched out toward the spectator. A poor peasant girl once made her lover swear that he would marry her if she accepted his caresses. The lover broke his oath and deserted her; whereupon the unhappy girl came to this church and called upon the crucified one to come to her rescue, and prove to the world her promise of marriage. He is said to have done so; for before the breathless spectators the hand of Christ detached itself from the cross, and on the silent air were heard the solemn words, I um the witness! An artist would consider this story a fine theme for a poem or a painting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In this parody of a traditional travelogue, Mark Twain chronicles his expedition through Europe to the Holy Land. Although based on true events, THE INNOCENTS ABREAD is as full of ironic wit and smart satire as any of Twain’s novels. As the story takes us from France to Rome to Jerusalem, we discover truths about our world and its inhabitants, seen through Twain’s uniquely humorous lens.

And as for the fountain pen! Words cannot express my joy, because I was so glad to be taken along that I just agreed with everything Walter suggested, and when he said I should have to share his fountain pen, I just rep-lied: Very well, which means that economy in luggage can be carried too far.
