Book excerpt: Temptation Road is a true and accurate account of a week-long road trip from India to Nepal and back taken by two young friends who are enthusiastic about the road, drugs and rock n’ roll. Written in a ‘stream of consciousness’ style, this almost fictional-seeming travelogue unfolds in a car on the road headed for the mountains. The writer and his driving fanatic friend pack provisions and hit the road with the express purpose of attending a rave on a mountaintop to experience bliss, paranoia and the mystical, through psychedelic drugs. Along the way, they meet interesting characters, get tempted to try things they wouldn’t otherwise try and have exhilarating as well as thought-provoking encounters. But, it would be a mistake to think of this work as one about drug use and abuse. This book is an observation and an insight into the youth and the culture of 21st century India. The name, Temptation Road, stems from the various temptations that the road offers, especially to the young who are looking for their place in the world. There are no exaggerations here, and everything expressed is either true or an opinion of the writer.

Rebecca has artistically resurrected the beautiful, poetic worship style of the Shepherd-King David. A unique, fresh approach brings new inspiration to your journaling. With imaginative skill, she utilizes the written word like a paintbrush in her picturesque turn of phrase by shading meaning into the ordinary. This stimulating fashion will add a splash of refreshment to your quiet time! Contemporary, Psalm-style poetry opens each topical thought, prayer or praise, accompanied by an interesting, often entertaining, always stimulating short narrative of the topic that sketches a present-day life application. Scriptures re-enforce the power tool of God’s Word, and blank lined pages are included to allow for the poet in you to compose your own thoughts and psalms! Destined to reignite the expressive spirit of worship to personal devotion and journaling! Makes a delightful gift book! Don’t forget to give one to yourself! Endorsement “At once inspirational and vulnerable, Rebecca Lamarche’s I Borrowed David’s Harp weaves poetry with personal story, offering fresh insight into everyday scripture readings. Rebecca reminds readers that the Bible is not a 12-step self-help book, but rather a relationship with a personal God, who yearns for His people to smile at the future, and the now. You’ll find I Borrowed David’s Harp a pure joy to read, not only once, but over and over.” —Cornelia Becker Seigneur, speaker and author of Images of America: WEST LINN and WriterMom Tales. “Beautifully written, biblically sound, with wonderful insight. Every page drew me in, I would recommend this book to anyone looking to deepen their faith and strengthen their walk with God.” —Jimmy Myers, PhD, LPC-S, Executive Director, The Timothy Center

Book excerpt: Readers of my earlier book--a memoir--may have been left with mixed feelings about it. Perhaps they felt that there was "something" wrong or missing. Maybe there was nothing redemptive about it or it had no "purpose". Maybe it seemed unfinished or was just "off". It was hard to put your finger on. After publication, I eventually came to realize these things, but never quite knew what the exact problem was. I just knew that it was out-of-balance. In 1999, a book that was written by David's oldest brother was published. I didn't read it until maybe seven years later, but when I did, I was instantly free. The book told in some detail what it was like to be a child in the Ruffin house. Time and place notwithstanding, the fact is that the father was extremely cruel to them. At that point, I was able to see David as a victim himself. Reading the details of those horrific experiences freed me of the anger, resentment and bitterness I had harbored for many years over how David had treated me and even our son. In the place of those feelings came a feeling of understanding; yes, even the gift of compassion. I understood that abuse was all he was ever taught; I was more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I forgave him. After all, how is a boy to learn what it is to be a man if he isn't taught by his father's Godly example? Thus, I was led to rewrite my memoir by giving my "testimony" of coming to Jesus in 2004 and by allowing people to know about David's childhood. I was also given other corrections, and title and cover. Now it all makes perfect sense!

Book excerpt: Shelby McIntyre has big plans—plans that include finding Mr. Right. Her dream man will have a clean-shaven jaw, creases in his pants and hopefully and advanced degree. What she gets is rugged Luke Riordan. At twenty-five, after five years as her mother's caregiver, it's time for Shelby to experience freedom and adventure. Time for travel, college and romance. But when she visits Virgin River, she runs into Luke Riordan, decidedly not whom she has in mind. A handsome Blackhawk pilot, Luke exited the army after twenty years, four wars and having been shot out of the sky three times. At thirty-eight he's tough and jaded. His major was in one-night stands, with a minor in commitment avoidance. Technically, these two are all wrong for one another. But sometimes what you want and what you need are two different things…two very good things.

Each article is a substantial, original piece of scholarship, which discusses the etymology and lexical meaning of the relevant Danish term, traces the development of the concept over the course of the authorship, and explains how it functions in the wider context of Kierkegaard’s thought. Concepts have been selected on the basis of their importance for Kierkegaard’s contributions to philosophy, theology, the social sciences, literature and aesthetics, thereby making this volume an ideal reference work for students and scholars in a wide range of disciplines.

Book excerpt: GOD IS ON THE ROAD Would you like to grow in awareness of God’s presence in your life? Paul Dixon shows how experiences of driving lead to reflections on living, alerting us to the inner pilgrimage—a journey we are all called to make. Whether you are a believer or an unbeliever, God is on the highway of life and He wants to journey with you. This book’s metaphoric use of driving and the road scene will help you to listen and respond to God who is deeply in love with you. God is on the Road is written for the general reader. It is a Christian spiritual book, yet relevant for all seeking love. The book functions like a pair of divine driving glasses, helping you glimpse God’s presence in your life. Each chapter is packed with short reflections to be dipped into a little at a time, challenging you to reflect on your life—your love story—with and to God. “God is on the Road is designed to help the reader to slow down and spend time with God. There are many aphorisms that stop the reader in his (her) tracks. This book would make an excellent addition to the seminarian reading list. Its many comparisons would provide some telling anecdotes for Sunday homilists. This is an original, thoughtful and helpful book.” Canon David Annear (Ret.), Diocese of Plymouth, United Kingdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his praise for Part I of Upbuilding Discourses in Various Spirits, the eminent Kierkegaard scholar Eduard Geismar said, "I am of the opinion that nothing of what he has written is to such a degree before the face of God. Anyone who really wants to understand Kierkegaard does well to begin with it." These discourses, composed after Kierkegaard had initially intended to end his public writing career, constitute the first work of his "second authorship." Characterized by Kierkegaard as ethical-ironic, Part One, "Purity of Heart Is to Will One Thing," offers a penetrating discussion of double-mindedness and ethical integrity. Part Two, "What We Learn from the Lilies in the Field and from the Birds of the Air," humorously exposes an inverted qualitative difference between the learner and the teacher. In Part Three, "The Gospel of Sufferings, Christian Discourses," the philosopher explores how joy can come out of suffering.

Book excerpt: The Spiritual Road: Helping Others Grow Spiritually There is a process of spiritual growth. Do you know what it is? Can you guide others along its path? The Spiritual Road: Helping Others Grow Spiritually overviews this process with a step by step approach using nearly sixty real-life vignettes, clarifying charts, over 250 documented scripture citations, supportive Christian music from fifth through the twenty-first centuries as well as referencing important spiritual authors. Dr. Haynes writes for all Christian helpers including Bible study and church leaders as well as pastors, spiritual directors and small group facilitators. In addition to encouragement and increased understanding of spiritual growth, spiritual helpers will also receive a toolbox to assist with the on-the-road spiritual difficulties including types of prayer, effective forgiveness, dealing with pain, spiritual Dark Nights, subversive words and demons from the unconscious. Those familiar with psycho-social and faith developmental theories will appreciate, Dr. Haynes' comparisons with the process of personal spiritual growth. Endnotes and a bibliography as well as general and scriptural indexes round out this extensive work. The book's overall purpose is to assist Christians to grow in their personal relationship with God and in mature Christ-likeness in order to affect the Community of God in the world. Richard A. Haynes is an ordained minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), receiving his Doctor of Minister degree, with distinction, from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard, Illinois in spirituality and small groups. Dr. Haynes has served as a spiritual director for over twenty-five years, was founder and executive director of Paraclete Retreat Center, Inc. for eighteen years and retired after twenty-nine years in pastoral ministry. In retirement, he continues to provide spiritual guidance in person and through Skype ([email protected]). He and his wife, Patricia, live in south-central Indiana and have one married adult son.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is found in this series unveils an entirely different side of C. K. Barrett, a side one might never have known about if one had knowledge only of his famous commentaries and monographs. Herein lies a goodly selection of Kingsley’s sermons preached largely in small- and medium-sized Methodist churches in the northeast of England, though often elsewhere in England and around the world. Fred Barrett was not the scholar his son was, but on close inspection, one can most definitely see the impact of the father on the son when it came to preaching. It seems right to include as many sermons from both of these men as we can in this series. One thing sorely lacking in much preaching these days is in-depth engagement with both the biblical text and one’s tradition and theology. The sermons in these volumes demonstrate what such preaching can look like. This third volume presents sermons from both the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Book excerpt: Note to Self chronicles the inspiring journey of an Armenian immigrant’s son and his endeavor to finding answers to his childhood struggles, dreams and life purpose in the midst of religious and ethnic wars coupled with social and economic challenges. Admittedly, this is a challenging endeavor, and yet he set out to find his happiness among the least-searched paths. He has explored and searched for answers in most religions, philosophers, authors and people’s life experiences. He’s taken the most difficult roads and was left in darkness for some time due to constant internal battles and lack of self-compassion until he reached a point of no return, when he finally decided to face and conquer his fears and self-doubts. He’s done that by isolating and distancing himself for some time from home, family, work and friends while trying to reach, unveil and comprehend his deepest memories, emotions, self-reflections and harbored childhood feelings. Eventually, as you will discover throughout this book, all the right questions gradually started to come to the surface at a time when he surrendered himself to God’s will, accepted his true-self with integrity and learned self-love. All these steps have led to his soul’s awakening and have helped him realize the power within. With enough courage and faith to follow his path, he’s been discovering the secrets of the universe, which lied within his subconscious mind and heart, sowed by his ancestors since the beginning of time. Note to Self is an important reminder to every one of us to take a step back and focus on the inner self first before dealing with the outer world. The author, Ara Fernezian, will explore two simple and fundamental self-questions, something maybe each one of us should ask ourselves: How do you love yourself and others? What have you done so far to improve people’s lives?
