Book excerpt: From book cover: Tombs Temples And Ancient Art: When Joseph Lindon Smith went out to Egypt as a young artist in 1898, archaeology was beginning to uncover some of the fabled treasures of an ancient land. For the next half-century, he devoted himself to the great "finds" as they were excavated from the encroaching sands, depicting them in countless paintings for the leading museums of the world. He became the friend of Flinder Petrie, the greatest of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Egyptologists, and the co-worker of the best-known archaeologists down to 1950; he explored and painted at Petra, Persepolis, Ur Palmyra, and Baalbek; he also did work with Sylvanus Griswold Morley in the ancient Maya centers of America, and painted in the Far East. His personal account of what transpired under his eyes and of the chronology and relations of ancient art over a wide area is at once exciting narrative and important history. The many illustrations chosen from his painting provide visual accompaniment to his story of classical civilizations and reveal the literal quality of his own art, which has in notable instances preserved for us the likeness of things that have since crumbled or faded on exposure to light and air after being buried for centuries. Tombs, Temples, And Ancient Art gains strength for its informality, for while the initiated will discover facts and interpretations of high importance to science, all readers will recognize in it the work of a man alive to adventure.

Book excerpt: World-renowned Egyptologist Barbara Mertz explores the reality behind the bestselling fiction she writes (as Elizabeth Peters) and casts a dazzling light on a remarkable civilization. Afascinating chronicle of an extraordinary people—from the first Stone Age settlements through the reign of Cleopatra and the Roman invasions—Temples, Tombs, and Hieroglyphs brings ancient Egypt to life as never before. Lavishly illustrated with pictures, maps, and photographs, it offers tantalizing glimpses into Egyptian society; amazing stories of the pharaohs and the rise and fall of great dynasties; a sampling of culture, religion, and folklore; stories of explorers, scientists, and scoundrels who sought to unravel or exploit the ageless mysteries; and new insights into the architectural wonders that were raised along the banks of the Nile.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of archaeoastronomy looks at more than 2,500 communal tombs and sanctuaries from around the Mediterranean. After a brief discussion of Hoskin's aims and the methodology for his fieldwork, individual chapters focus on evidence from particular regions: Malta, Gozo, the Balearics, Iberia, southern France, Corsica and Sardinia, Sicily and Pantelleria, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. The author concludes that in most of these regions the monuments faced sunrise, or more generally the sun when it was rising or climbing in the sky. Along the Mediterranean coast of France, however, there is a reverse sunset custom; in North Africa tombs faced downhill and in a Minoan cemetery on Crete all the tombs faced moonrise and look towards a mountain on whose peak was a sanctuary probably sacred to a lunar god. 264p, b/w figs and photos throughout, tables (Ocarina Books 2001) ` adorned with dozens of beautiful photographs, technical diagrams, and an extraordinary Corpus Mensurarum.....a living masterpiece in the field of archaeoastronomy ' - Juan Antonio Belmonte, Instituto de Astroficia de Canarias `

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For too long the story of this exciting period has been told using the same stone-built suites, mainly in the North and on Orkney. It tells the story using evidence from all over Scotland, from simple settlements as well as the great monuments, tombs and mysterious standing stones that are still such a notable feature of today's landscape. Designed throughout with colourful and detailed illustrations, "Farmers, Temples and Tombs" outlines in a clear and understandable way the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age in Scotland. It contains in-depth features on important Neolithic sites and emphasizes that what are now archaeological sites were once places where normal people lived. Included in the book are specially commissioned illustrations which show how different sites might have looked, as well as a list of Neolithic sites that can be visited across Scotland. This book is part of a newly updated edition of the acclaimed Making of Scotland series produced by Historic Scotland and Birlinn which provides lively, accessible and up-to-date introductions to key themes and periods in Scottish history and prehistory.
