Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For at least 1500 years, temple design, construction and worship have followed the canon of the ?gama-s. Shouldn’t temple management also follow the ?gama-s? Steeped in a history of more than two millennia, the real bequest of India’s ancient temples is that they are still living sacred spaces. The gods that were invoked in these temples more than a thousand years ago, continue to reside in the sanctums and gaze benevolently upon their devotees. The bells ring for morning service as they did a thousand years ago. The ?c?rya waves the ?rati just as another ?c?rya did a thousand years ago. No other organization in the world can boast of such amazing continuity. The secret to this longevity lies in the ?gama-s. ?gama-s are the traditional canon believed to be as old as the Vedas, with detailed manuals on temple-building, consecration and ritual worship. While the world outside the temples – a world of kings and kingdoms – has changed, temples continue to follow the ?gama-s in letter and spirit in their everyday religious function, notwithstanding the many changes in administrative formats. By studying the activities of the temple, material and manpower required, qualifications and roles prescribed for the temple professionals, this thesis attempts to reconstruct an ?gamic temple management framework, using the K?mik?gama as primary text with other ?gama-s, secondary literature and inscriptional evidence as required.

Book excerpt: "Temple management is not a new subject; however this is first time ever that a systematic book is written on that subject. Temples as infrastructure of Hindus and its management is vital for the community. They should therefore set benchmarks for temple activity, rituals and administration with a view to aim at a reasonable TSoR (the Temple Social Responsibility) and TSpR (Temple Spiritual Responsibility). HSIM (Hindu Sanskriti Information Management), Interfaith Protocols and ToTD (the Tragedy of Triple Distillation) on account of inaccurate translations are subjects that Hindus need to take up seriously. With the better-informed gen-next, it is no more possible to carry on temple activity without any accountability. It is time the temple managers think seriously and provide responsible management to their temples."--Book jacket.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the multidisciplinary management of meningiomas, followed by evaluation and management considerations along a spectrum of benign to more malignant behavior. It outlines the management of presumed Grade 1 tumors and how to identify features of tumors radiographically and clinically that may support a benign course rather than aggressive and vice versa. Following a stepwise progression from simple to complex, chapters introduce and tackle more aggressive meningiomas and tumor recurrence (of all Grades), with paradigms for evaluation and treatment. Tumor biology and genomics are fundamental and largely focused in the book. More recent findings which have directed personalized medicine and clinical trials are also addressed. Meningiomas: Comprehensive Strategies for Management addresses all aspects of the evaluation and care of patients with all WHO grades of meningiomas. It is highly informative and provides clarity for a wide audience of neurosurgeons, reconstructive surgeons, oncologists, neurologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, residents and students who treat these patients and those who are training for a career in managing patients with these potentially challenging tumors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early explorers up through those of the early part of the last century were the supreme users of management practices that have been formalized today. Their expeditions had all the characteristics of a business project: goal setting, strategizing, applying finite resources, risk-taking, keeping people, dealing with competitors, and many others. During actual expeditions, the leaders faced many risks, issues, and conflicts that challenge the best leaders today, from small to large enterprises. Like all projects and business ventures, the expeditions met their goal, either partially or entirely, and in some cases even exceeded it or failed it completely. Management Lessons from the Great Explorers selects the most famous, and in some cases infamous, explorers to discuss and analyze the good and bad management practices—even though these explorers may have never called them management practices—they used before, during, and even after their expeditions. Each chapter provides historical background about one explorer and the details about their explorations. The chapters then discuss the challenges the explorers faced when planning and executing their expeditions and examine their successes and failures from a management perspective. The book will help managers to Manage unexpected and potentially catastrophic risks Set goals that open up new horizons Communicate effectively with team members Lead teams through hardships and difficulties The final chapter gives lessons learned that managers may take from the book and apply to their own business undertakings. These lessons include Learning from experience Having a strong sponsor and team Relying on data and information Applying risk management and adapting to changing circumstances Implementing unity of command and defining roles and responsibilities Identifying and understanding stakeholders Being decisive Being willing to say no

Book excerpt: Intractable epilepsy still remains the main issue despite new advances in medical and surgical treatment of epilepsy. Acute seizure management in a timely manner is crucial to prevent irreversible brain damage. Benzodiazepines still remain the first initial treatment to abort the seizure activity. The approval phenytoin, fosphenytoin, intravenous valproate, and rectal diazepam provided additional options. The approval of intravenous levetiracetam gave another option to physicians if and when the above treatment fails to control the seizure activity. In this Ebook, we have included chapters from renowned researchers in the field of neurology and epilepsy who have covered the various aspects of these agents in detail including the properties, mechanism of action, pharmacology, neurobehavioral effects, and the roles of these agents in special populations including traumatic brain injury and brain tumor related epilepsy. These data further show that intravenous levetiracetam can be used in acute seizure management and in special circumstances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the reader with a detailed update on the use of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in patients with lesions of the brain and other parts of the body. The aim is not simply to explain the application of SRS and document its value with reference to the author's own clinical experiences and other published evidence, but also to contextualize the technology within a new strategic concept of cancer care. When embedded within an appropriate conceptual framework, technology becomes pivotal in changing therapeutic strategies. A new paradigm that is increasingly impacting on clinical practice is the oligometastatic state, on the basis that long-term survival might be achieved in patients with a low volume and number of metastatic lesions. This book accordingly addresses the value of SRS in patients with oligometastases of solid tumors to the brain, lung, spine, and liver. In addition, it examines the use of SRS in patients with diverse brain lesions, early-stage stage lung cancer, liver cancer, and early-stage prostate cancer. Readers will be persuaded that SRS, using cutting-edge imaging technologies to deliver precisely targeted radiation therapy, represents an exciting non-invasive procedure that holds great promise for the present and the future of cancer care.

This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) is a new radiotherapy technology that combines the rapid dose fall off associated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and daily tumor imaging allowing for high precision tumor dose delivery and effective sparing of surrounding normal organs. The new radiation technology requires close collaboration between radiologists, nuclear medicine specialists, and radiation oncologists to avoid marginal miss. Modern diagnostic imaging such as positron emission tomography (PET) scans, positron emission tomography with Computed Tomograpgy (PET-CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows the radiation oncologist to target the positive tumor with high accuracy. As the tumor is well visualized during radiation treatment, the margins required to avoid geographic miss can be safely reduced , thus sparing the normal organs from excessive radiation. When the tumor is located close to critical radiosensitive structures such as the spinal cord, IGRT can deliver a high dose of radiation to the tumor and simultaneously decreasing treatment toxicity, thus potentially improving cure rates and patient quality of life. During radiotherapy, tumor shrinkage and changes of normal tissues/volumes can be detected daily with IGRT. The volume changes in the target volumes and organs at risk often lead to increased radiation dose to the normal tissues and if left uncorrected may result in late complications. Adaptive radiotherapy with re-planning during the course of radiotherapy is therefore another advantage of IGRT over the conventional radiotherapy techniques. This new technology of radiotherapy delivery provides the radiation oncologist an effective tool to improve patient quality of life. In the future, radiation dose-escalation to the residual tumor may potentially improve survival rates. Because the treatment complexity, a great deal of work is required from the dosimetry staff and physicists to ensure quality of care. Preliminary clinical results with IGRT are encouraging but more prospective studies should be performed in the future to assess the effectiveness of IGRT in improving patient quality of life and local control. In this Frontiers Research Topic, we encourage submission of original papers and reviews dealing with imaging for radiotherapy planning, the physics and dosimetry associated with IGRT, as well as the clinical outcomes for cancer treatment with IGRT for all tumor sites.
