Book excerpt: Mixed microstructures were produced by cooling ASTM A723 steel from 830 deg C (1526 deg F) to lower temperatures, notably at 210 deg and 250 deg C (410 deg and 482 deg F), which are below the start of the martensite transformation (M sub s) temperature of 286 deg C (547 deg F), and held for 2-1/4 hours. This resulted in the isothermal formation of 25 or 66 percent lower bainite as one part of the mixed microstructure with martensite. Tempering studies were conducted from 260 deg to 704 deg C (500 deg to 1300 deg F). Optimum tempering occurred at 593 deg C (1100 deg F), where differences between strength and hardness levels were minimized and the yield strength-to-ultimate tensile strength ratio was maximized. This allowed impact and toughness tests to be performed on an equal basis. Impact tests, conducted from -100 deg to 88 deg C ( -148 deg to 190 deg F), revealed that mixed microstructures could produce higher impact energy values compared to all-martensite. When the mixed microstructure containing 25 percent lower bainite was tested at -40 deg F), the impact energy was increased by about 18 ft-lbs, compared to quenched and tempered martensite, and had the lowest ductile-brittle transition temperature of -73.3 deg C ( -100 deg F) versus -68.3 deg C ( -91 deg F) for martensite. Fracture toughness tests at -40 deg C revealed only a slight improvement in toughness for mixed microstructures at 188 Ksi (check) in., compared to all- martensite at 183.8 Ksi (check) in.

Book excerpt: The microstructures of both martensite and bainite, although sharing some common features, depict a plethora of subtle differences that made them unique when studied in further detail. Tailoring the final properties of a microstructure based on one or the other as well as in combination with others and exploring more sophisticated concepts, such as Q&P and nanostructured bainite, are the topics which are the focus of research around the world. In understanding the key microstructural parameters controlling the final properties as well as definition of adequate process parameters to attain the desired microstructures requires that a proper understanding of the mechanism ruling their transformation and a detailed characterization first be acheived. The development of new and powerful scientific techniques and equipment (EBSD, APT, HRTEM, etc.) allow us to gain fundamental insights that help to establish some of the principles by which those microstructures are known. The developments accompanying such findings lead to further developments and intensive research providing the required metallurgical support.

Book excerpt: The completely revised Second Edition of Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist provides a solid understanding of the basic principles and current practices of metallurgy. This major new edition is for anyone who uses, makes, buys or tests metal products. For both beginners and others seeking a basic refresher, the new Second Edition of the popular Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist gives an all-new modern view on the basic principles and practices of metallurgy. This new edition is extensively updated with broader coverage of topics, new and improved illustrations, and more explanation of basic concepts. Why are cast irons so suitable for casting? Do some nonferrous alloys respond to heat treatment like steels? Why is corrosion so pernicious? These are questions that can be answered in this updated reference with many new illustrations, examples, and descriptions of basic metallurgy.

Book excerpt: Nano-bainitic steels represent a new class of alloys, whose microstructure consists of nanostructured bainitic ferrite formed at low temperature with a high amount of retained austenite leading to a high ductility and high tensile strength of the steel. Formation of nano-bainite has been studied thoroughly in literature as well as tempering of nano-bainitic steels. More recently it has been shown that adding carbide forming elements such as V and Mo increases the resistance to softening and hence the mechanical properties of nano-bainite at moderate temperature. Investigating the secondary carbide precipitation inside a nano-bainitic microstructure is thus necessary to optimize the thermal treatments for this promising new class of steels. Three initial microstructures of the same steel composition are investigated: martensite, martensite + retained austenite and nano-bainite. Studying the more conventional case of martensite has served as a basis to better understand the microstructure evolutions inside the nano-bainitic steel. The microstructural evolutions during the tempering were followed by complementary experimental techniques including dilatometry, in situ high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction (HEXRD), conventional and high resolution TEM. The sequence of carbides precipitation and dissolution (transition-iron-carbides, cementite, and alloyed carbides) both during heating and holding is shown similar for the three initial microstructures. The kinetics are similar as well as cementite chemical composition and size distributions of cementite and alloyed carbides. It has been shown too that the three microstructures present a high retained austenite stability. Moreover, the analyses of the lattice parameters evolutions all along the tempering treatment associated with carbon mass balances have allowed to better understand the carbon distributions between carbides and matrix phases. The nucleation and growth model from a previous work was upgraded to take into account secondary precipitation and different new features (e.g. para-equilibrium interface condition for first stage of cementite growth, etc.). This model predicts the kinetics of precipitation, the particle densities and size distributions as well as matrix and carbides mean composition for different tempering conditions. Apart from the comparison with the experimental results that is discussed, it allowed to interpret the similar tempering behaviour for the three initial microstructures.

Book excerpt: Usually bainitic microstructures exhibit good toughness and austempering is typically the preferred heat treatment when toughness is the primary requirement of the component. Several reports have shown such characteristics when compared to tempered martensite. High-carbon steel may exhibit brittle characteristics but it is a good steel with respect to mechanical properties and wear resistance. The objective of this study was to compare the impact properties of AISI O1, a high-carbon tool steel, designated VND in Brazil. This was done by comparing Charpy impact strength under different heat-treatment cycles. Steel test specimens were quenched from 820°C and tempered at 450°C to obtain tempered martensite, then austenitized, cooled, and held at 350°C to obtain bainite by holding at temperature for 20, 40, and 60 min. Because hardness influences impact behavior, comparative studies were performed at the same surface hardness level. The austempered samples with bainite microstructures obtained at a constant temperature and, by varying holding times, exhibited lower impact properties as compared to the quenched and tempered condition.

Book excerpt: This is the third edition of the book, much expanded to include and incorporate important developments in the subject over the last fifteen years. The book represents a comprehensive treatise on all aspects of the bainite transformation, from the choreography of atoms during the phase change to length scales that are typical of engineering applications. The alloy design that emerges from this explains the role of solute additions, and the pernicious effects of impurities such as hydrogen. The picture presented is self-consistent and therefore is able to guide the reader on the exploitation of theory to the design of some of the most exciting steels, including the world’s first bulk nanostructured metal.
