Book excerpt: Moral leadership matters. As world politics enters a new and dangerous era, judgment, constancy, moral purpose, and a willingness to overcome partisan politicking are essential for America's leaders. Tempered Strength finds the alternative standard of leadership that Americans are seeking in the classical philosophy of prudence. Ethan Fishman's new work brings together leading American political scientists--including Ronald Beiner, Kenneth L. Deutsch, and George Anastaplo--to discuss the evolution of a standard of prudential leadership both reasonable in nature and practical in scope. Section One studies the meaning of prudence and its evolution in the history of political science from Aristotelian phronesis to Xenophon, Thomas Aquinas, Edmund Burke, and Michael Oakeshott. Section Two demonstrates how the theory of prudential leadership can be applied to practical political issues.

Loner. Soldier. Soldier’s son. An elite military cop, he was one of the army’s brightest stars. But in every cop’s life there is one case that changes everything. For Jack Reacher, this is that case. New Year’s Day, 1990. In a North Carolina motel, a two-star general is found dead. His briefcase is missing. Nobody knows what was in it. Within minutes Reacher has his orders: Control the situation. Within hours the general’s wife is murdered. Then the dominoes really start to fall. Somewhere inside the vast worldwide fortress that is the U.S. Army, Reacher is being set up as a fall guy with the worst enemies a man can have. But Reacher won’t quit. He’s fighting a new kind of war—against an enemy he didn’t know he had. And against a conspiracy more chilling, ingenious, and treacherous than anyone could have guessed. The Enemy, like most of the books in the Jack Reacher series, can be read as a standalone thriller.

The visual effect has been neglected in the evaluation of the building product and increasingly leads to disputes between the parties involved. This thesis extends the state of knowledge on the cause and perception of optical anisotropic effects and presents a concept for measuring and evaluating them in flat monolithic tempered architectural glass. Initially, an overview and description of current photoelastic measurement methods are given, and the accuracy of the used measurement setups is verified for the first time. The experimental basis for the concept is formed by extensive full-field retardation measurements in the laboratory and field studies of the maximum visibility of the anisotropy effects in an outdoor test rig with accompanying polarization measurements of the sky. Various glass types, geometries, and tempering levels are selected based on typically used products, and their influence on the resulting retardation image is investigated. Determining a correlation of the retardation images with the reflection images of selected test specimens in the outdoor test rig complements the experiments. Based on this, digital evaluation methods are presented, further developed, and applied to the measured retardation images. From the critical analysis of these results, limit values for different anisotropy quality classes are derived, and the concept is complemented. With the implementation of the evaluation methods and the limit values in commercial anisotropy scanners, the quality of each glass pane can be determined directly after tempering in the future. By choosing the highest quality class A, it will be possible in the future to significantly reduce anisotropy effects in constructions made of tempered glass panes.

This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main criteria for assessing the load-bearing behaviour and risk potential of monolithic glass are its fragmentation and the morphology of the fragments. These depend strongly non-linearly on the strain energy density present in the glass at the time of fracture, which can be converted into fracture energy. Thus, the design and optimization of structural glazing in engineering requires both knowledge of the relevant parameters and mechanisms during the fracture process in glass and an understanding of the characteristics of the fracture structure. Based on fracture mechanics considerations and comprehensive experimental investigations, various aspects and physical quantities of fracture behaviour as well as characteristics and parameters of fracture pattern morphology of fragmented, tempered soda-lime glass were studied and correlated with the stored strain energy. The relationship between fragmentation behavior and strain energy was elaborated using the energy criterion in Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) related to the initial strain energy before fragmentation and in the post-fracture state. Furthermore, a machine learning inspired approach for the prediction of 2D macro-scale fragmentation of tempered glass was developed and elaborated based on fracture mechanics considerations and statistical analysis of the fracture pattern morphology. A method was deduced and applied in which the fracture pattern of tempered glass is predicted and simulated by Voronoi tessellation of point patterns based on Bayesian spatial point statistics fed with energy conditions in LEFM.

Book excerpt: Welding is an art and skill that's essential for automotive fabrication, repair, and vehicle upgrades, but it is also an important skill for countless household projects and industries. Some books show merely basic welding techniques with steel and cast iron. But this isn't your run-of-the-mill introductory welding book. In this revised edition of the previous title, Advanced Automotive Welding, Jerry Uttrachi, past president of the American Welding Society, does show you how to perform basic welding procedures with steel and cast iron. But he also reveals advanced welding techniques and the use of aluminum, titanium, magnesium, stainless steel, and other specialty materials. Projects and techniques in this book focus on automotive applications but can also be used for welding a bicycle frame, welding a steel grill, or repairing the frame for a garden bench. TIG, oxyacetylene, arc, and wire-feed welding processes are covered, but special coverage is provided for stick and MIG. Welding butt and V-joints is explained plus welding more complex joints, including J- and U-joints, is also shown. Step-by-step instruction and exceptional detail give you the necessary information to tackle and complete complex welding jobs. Popular automotive projects, such as welding an electric fuel pump into an aluminum tank, repairing chromemoly suspension arms, and welding in floorpans, are thoroughly covered. And when it comes to repairing household items, specific projects such as repairing and modifying the steel tubing on an exercise machine, repairing a decorative bench, and more are covered. Rather than take a project to a shop, you can now do the job at home. Whether you're new to welding or a veteran welder looking to work with special materials or involved in a special project, you will find indispensible information within the pages of this book. Now you can confidently weld with steel, cast iron, aluminum, anodized steel, titanium, magnesium, and other specialty metals.
