This book was released on 2012 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research introduces and compares various THIC systems firstly and then focuses on the dedicated outdoor air system - dry coil (DOAS-DC) system, because the DOAS-DC system can be conveniently built by retrofitting exiting conventional air conditioning systems. System configuration, operation strategy as well as strengths and weakness of the DOAS-DC system are analysed. Simulation study on the platform of EnergyPlus is conducted to compares the performance of the DOAS-DC system with those of conventional constant air volume (CAV) system in terms of energy consumption and indoor thermal comfort. A typical office space is built on EnergyPlus. The simulation tests are performed using the hot and humid weather data in Hong Kong. Annual energy consumption of the DOAS-DC system and the CAV system serving the same office space are obtained to compare their energy performances. The simulation results indicate that energy consumption of the DOAS-DC system is 20.1% less than that of the conventional CAV system while maintaining the same indoor design parameters. Besides, the DOAS-DC system can maintain more stable indoor thermal parameters, i.e. the indoor temperature and humidity, than the CAV system.

Book excerpt: The increasing concern with indoor air quality has led to air-quality standards with increased ventilation rates. Although increasing the volume flow rate of outside air is advisable from the perspective of air-quality, it is detrimental to energy consumption, since the outside air has to be brought to the comfort condition before it is insufflated to the conditioned ambient. Moreover, the humidity load carried within outside air has challenging HVAC engineers to design cooling units which are able to satisfactorily handle both sensible and latent contributions to the thermal load. This constitutes a favorable scenario for the use of solid desiccants to assist the cooling units. In fact, desiccant wheels have been increasingly applied by HVAC designers, allowing distinct processes for the air cooling and dehumidification. In fact, the ability of solid desiccants in moisture removal is effective enough to allow the use of evaporative coolers, in opposition to the traditional vapor-compression cycle, resulting in an ecologically sound system which uses only water as the refrigerant. Desiccant Assisted Cooling: Fundamentals and Applications presents different approaches to the mathematical modeling and simulation of desiccant wheels, as well as applications in thermal comfort and humidity controlled environments. Experts in the field discuss topics from enthalpy, lumped models for heat and mass transfer, and desiccant assisted radiant cooling systems, among others. Aimed at air-conditioning engineers and thermal engineering researchers, this book can also be used by graduate level students and lecturers in the field.

Book excerpt: In the First Edition of this classic text, Roger Haines devised a simple building-block method which enabled students to quickly learn about the operating principles and applications of all the basic devices and subsystems used in HVAC control. The new Fifth Edition, completely revised by Douglas Hittle, takes into account the many technological changes that have arisen since then. Crystal-clear guidelines on combining control devices, circuits, computers, and HVAC equipment into efficient control systems that are accurate and energy-efficient are presented along with hundreds of charts and illustrations which provide data critical to the understanding and design of modern HVAC systems. These include: psychrometric charts and tables relating to optimal levels of temperature and humidity at specific altitudes: block/flow diagrams which show control component function; circuit diagrams of important electrical control system components; schematic diagrams showing the configuration of various control systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the latest modeling and control technologies in the context of air-conditioning systems. Firstly, it introduces the state-space method for developing dynamic models of all components in a central air-conditioning system. The models are primarily nonlinear and based on the fundamental principle of energy and mass conservation, and are transformed into state-space form through linearization. The book goes on to describe and discuss the state-space models with the help of graph theory and the structure-matrix theory. Subsequently, virtual sensor calibration and virtual sensing methods (which are very useful for real system control) are illustrated together with a case study. Model-based predictive control and state-space feedback control are applied to air-conditioning systems to yield better local control, while the air-side synergic control scheme and a global optimization strategy based on the decomposition-coordination method are developed so as to achieve energy conservation in the central air-conditioning system. Lastly, control strategies for VAV systems including total air volume control and trim & response static pressure control are investigated in practice.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two reasons why we have a new edition every four or five years. The first is that technology changes. Chapter 10, on computer-based con trols, has had to be almost completely rewritten. Fundamentals don't change, but the tools available to us do change. Evaluation and proper use of those tools makes it even more imperative that we understand fundamentals. Many of our control problems stem from the use of new devices as a solution to problems that are, in fact, control design errors. New gadgets, for example, Direct Digital Controls (DDC), will not solve basic problems and may even compound them. None-the-Iess, you will find an extensive discussion of DDC because I think it is the probable "future" in HVAC control. But it must be applied with a good understanding of fundamentals. The second reason is that I keep learning and need to pass on my new and improved understanding to my readers. Thus you will find a number of small but important revisions, a dissertation on control "modes," and a much more detailed discussion of how electronic control devices work. There are a few places where I have corrected what I now perceive to be errors. I apologize for these. I have been much encouraged by the acceptance of this book in the past, and I hope that this new edition will be helpful. Thank you for your support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive introduction to novel absorption heating technologies for improving the energy efficiency of heating systems. The proposed low-temperature heating systems, based on an air source absorption heat pump (ASAHP), significantly increase heating efficiency and reduce pollution emissions. As the performance of ASAHPs deteriorates at lower ambient/driving temperatures, a series of advanced cycles is used to extend their applicability, with the compression-assisted ASAHP being the most outstanding example. The book discusses the generator-absorber-heat-exchange ASAHP as a promising solution to make the best of high driving temperatures, an aspect that can be improved further via compression. Further, it addresses the ground source absorption heat pump (GSAHP), which eliminates the soil thermal imbalance of the conventional ground source electrical heat pump (GSEHP), and also reduces the number of boreholes . Various hybrid GSAHP systems are proposed to further enhance applicability, efficiency, and economy: these include a combined GSAHP and GSEHP system, as well as ASAHP and GSAHP systems that incorporate design optimizations. In closing, the book explores the merits of novel working fluids and highlights recent advances concerning waste heat and renewable energy utilization.
