Book Synopsis Redemption and Regret by : James Scarth Gale

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Redemption and Regret presents two previously unpublished typescripts of James Scarth Gale, a Canadian missionary to Korea for four decades (1888–1927). During his time in Korea, Gale developed into the foremost Western scholar of Korean history, language, and literature, completing the first translation of Korean literature into a Western language, the first translation of English literature into Korean, and the first comprehensive Korean-English dictionary. In addition to these translations, the typescripts entitled Pen Pictures of Old Korea (ca. 1910) and Old Corea (ca. 1925), each presented here with introductory essays, contain Gale’s observations of various cultural artifacts, behaviours, and practices. Gale lived in Korea during a tumultuous and transformative period that witnessed the transition of the country from a "hermit" suzerain kingdom to an independent empire, and finally to a colonial possession of Japan. Pen Pictures of Old Korea and Old Corea preserve what Gale viewed as inevitably fated for extinction. This realization imbues his writings with a sense of ambivalence towards the "passing" of traditional Korea – owing to the conflict between his profound admiration for pre-modern Korean culture and his Western missionary identity, which demanded that the country adapt to a modern, Christian world.

This book was released on 2019-04-04 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1836, the Maine State Museum is America’s oldest state museum and is known to many as “Maine’s Smithsonian” because of the breadth and diversity of its holdings—nearly a million objects covering every aspect of the state’s cultural, biological, and geological history—and the thousands of stories its collections tell. For this book the museum selected and photographed 112 artifacts and specimens that, together, tell an epic story of the land and its people from prehistoric times to the present. It is a story covering 395 million years, a story told with a walrus skull and fossils, tourmaline and spear points, mammoth tusks and bone fishhooks, Norse coins and caulking irons, militia flags and survey stakes, treaty documents and wooden tankards, a temperance banner and a locomotive, Joshua Chamberlain’s pistol and a cod tub trawl, a Lombard log hauler and a woman’s WWII welding outfit, L. L. Bean boots and German POW snowshoes, and many more objects from the museum’s collections. Short narratives written by museum curators are woven around each item—including photos of related objects—and the ensemble has been honed, polished, and introduced by museum director Bernard Fishman. This is a book that historians and Maine residents and visitors will delve into again and again, unearthing new treasures with each reading.
Book Synopsis Temperance Torchlights by : Matilda Erickson
Download or read book Temperance Torchlights written by Matilda Erickson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-10-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a valuable contribution to the cause of temperance. It is one more keen weapon placed in the hands of the 'temperance army.' The fund of information it contains will inspire the advocates of temperance to work with greater zeal, and it will lead many who are now halting and indifferent to take a firm stand for the temperance cause. The testimony it gives from many of the world's greatest physicians, statesmen, prison officials, and ministers of the gospel is of great value, and can not fail to make a profound impression upon those into whose hands the book may fall. The statistics, poems, songs, and suggestions relating to temperance meetings will be very helpful to those whose hearts yearn to do something to advance the cause of true temperance. --A. G. Daniels, from the Introduction
