Book Synopsis Global Indian Diasporas by : Gijsbert Oonk
Download or read book Global Indian Diasporas written by Gijsbert Oonk and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Indian Diasporas discusses the relationship between South Asian emigrants and their homeland, the reproduction of Indian culture abroad, and the role of the Indian state in reconnecting emigrants to India. Focusing on the limits of the diaspora concept, rather than its possibilities, this volume presents new historical and anthropological research on South Asian emigrants worldwide. From a comparative perspective, examples of South Asian emigrants in Suriname, Mauritius, East Africa, Canada, and the United Kingdom are deployed in order to show that in each of these regions there are South Asian emigrants who do not fit into the Indian diaspora concept—raising questions about the effectiveness of the diaspora as an academic and sociological index, and presenting new and controversial insights in diaspora issues.

Book Synopsis Styles of Multiculturalism in Mauritius by : Barbara Waldis
Download or read book Styles of Multiculturalism in Mauritius written by Barbara Waldis and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2018-07 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does multiculturalism mean in Mauritius? This question was the starting point of an ethnographic study on an island state in the Indian Ocean that had always been part of a global project and always been (post)colonial. The introduction of citizenship education at school in this Republic with its ethnically, religiously and linguistically diverse population serves as an example for the analysis of how different approaches to multicultural policy-making collide. The negotiations on the school subject illustrate the organisation of cultural difference by the state mainly through Indo-Mauritian and Creole nationalism.

Book Synopsis Culture, Creation, and Procreation by : Monika Böck
Download or read book Culture, Creation, and Procreation written by Monika Böck and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As reproduction is seen as central to kinship and the biological link as the primary bond between parents and their offspring, Western perceptions of kin relations are primarily determined by ideas about "consanguinity," "genealogical relations," and "genetic connections." Advocates of cultural constructivism have taken issue with a concept that puts so much stress on heredity as being severely biased by western ideas of kinship. Ethnosociologists in particular developed alternative systems using indigenous categories. This symbolic approach has, however, been rejected by some scholars as plagued by the problems of the analytical separation of ideology from practice, of largely overlooking relations of domination, and of ignoring the questions of shared knowledge and choice. This volume offers a corrective by discussing the constitution of kinship among different communities in South Asia and addressing the relationship between ideology and practice, cultural models, and individiual strategies.

This book was released on 2024-01-20 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quote sums up the role of teachers in student’s life. The influence of a teacher extends beyond the four walls of a class room and plays a significant role in molding and shaping the life of a student. Rather the teacher-student bond is the foundation stone of building the life of a student. I am lucky to be a teacher who had a great influence on the lives of many medical students. The bond, and rapport between the teacher and the student is unique and beyond explanation. I have the privilege of being a teacher for over four decades having taught couple of thousand students who now adorn the garden of Medicine. I will just narrate one incident that describes the beauty and greatness of this relationship. When I was teaching in Antigua I had developed such a relationship that cemented our souls together. At the time of my leaving the medical school, at the Airport one of my student just tried to become one with me, standing on my feet, embracing me and not allowing me to travel. It took lot of persuasion to take leave of the student leaving a deep rooted bonding that defies explanation. This short write up pictures the journey of my life traveling through many stations of learning carrying memories which words cannot capture or portray for these experiences are embedded deep into the chambers of heart, probably rightly called as the seat of love and emotions.
