Book excerpt: This volume deals with the occupational chronology and the material remains of three of the most important settlements in the Central Jordan Valley during the Middle and Late Bronze Ages: Pella, Tell Abu al-Kharaz and Tell Deir 'Alla. The publication's presentation of significant results follows an unconventional approach: the contributors were given the opportunity to discuss the editor's conclusions. The three sites are presented by the respective excavators in the first three chapters. In Chapter 4, the editor summarizes the excavation results and their interpretations. Chapter 5 gives the other two contributors the opportunity to respond to Fischer's conclusions. Van der Kooij agrees with Fischer's conclusions, whereas Bourke presents additional theories and interpretations, although agreeing with Fischer on all major issues. In Chapter 6, Fischer includes Bourke's response in his resume, in which all the sites are synchronized locally, regionally and inter-culturally. The present volume is of major importance not only for the archaeology of the Jordan Valley and the Southern Levant, but also for other related cultures that provided imports, including Syria/Lebanon, Cyprus and Egypt, as well as the Mycenaean sphere. Fischer's revised terminology and chronology for the sub-division of the Late Bronze Age is used by all contributors, although the interdisciplinary character of the publication should be underlined.

Book excerpt: When Western explorers first encountered dolmens in the Levant, they thought they had discovered the origins of a megalithic phenomenon that spread as far as the Atlantic coast. Although European dolmens are now considered an unrelated tradition, many researchers continue to approach dolmens in the Levant as part of a trans-regional phenomenon that spanned the Taurus mountains to the Arabian peninsula. By tightly defining the term 'dolmen' itself, this book brings these mysterious monuments into sharper focus. Drawing on historical, archaeological and geological sources, it is shown that dolmens in the Levant mostly concentrate in the eastern escarpment of the Jordan Rift Valley, and in the Galilean hills. They cluster near proto-urban settlements of the Early Bronze I period (3700–3000 BCE) in particular geological zones suitable for the extraction of megalithic slabs. Rather than approaching dolmens as a regional phenomenon, this book considers dolmens as part of a local burial tradition whose tomb forms varied depending on geological constraints. Dolmens in the Levant is essential for anyone interested in the rise of civilisations in the ancient Middle East, and particularly those who have wondered at the origins of these enigmatic burial monuments that dominate the landscape.

Crossing cultural and ecological boundaries and traded from the desert to the settled zone, these tools encompassed both ritual and quotidian functions over the course of well over the two millennia of the existence of the exchange system. Analyses focus on the changing nature of the production systems, dynamics of value in changing contexts of production and use, ritual contexts and meaning. Extending throughout the Levant, the tabular scraper complex is compared and contrasted to other contemporary production and exchange systems (ceramics, chipped stone, ground stone, copper, beads), offering a rich picture of the complexities of late prehistoric trade, transcending linear evolutionary frameworks, and simple models. Adopting a chaîne opératoire approach to the use-life of the artifacts, the artifacts can be seen to transform over time and place, made, used, recycled, and ultimately discarded, each stage in its own cultural contexts.
