Book excerpt: In 1936 Berlin, an unlikely friendship develops between Sidney Klein, the son of an American Army officer, and Klaus Bergman, the son of a Nazi SS officer. Although they are of complete polar opposites when it comes to the political spectrum, they develop a trust and friendship that will remain throughout the coming world war. When they part ways after the end of school, they promise each other, “Till we meet again.” Neither of the friends could possibly guess that their paths would cross again in the least likely of places and under the most unusual of circumstances. Their career choices will lead them along very similar, yet diverse paths. Their combat experiences are quite different, but both are equally affected by the death and destruction of war. Sidney’s girlfriend, Rachel, travels with her Aunt Sylvia to Germany to help Sylvia’s Uncle Abraham close his shop and move out of Germany. It is also to be an opportunity for Rachel to experience the city nightlife of Berlin. A series of events that result in Rachel and Aunt Sylvia losing their passports and coming to the attention of German authorities sees them being arrested and sent first to jail and then the concentration camps. Sidney makes a difficult decision to join the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) in order to get to Germany and rescue his beloved Rachel. He uses all available means to locate where Rachel is being held and does his utmost to be placed in a position to liberate her. Life in the concentration camp is brutal, dangerous, and subject to mistreatment. Both women are fortunate in possessing skills that make them “essential” personnel, extending their lives and probably improving their chances for survival. As the war draws to a close, Sidney is leading a rescue party headed for the camp at Dachau, and Rachel. Little does he suspect that the promise he and Klaus Bergman made so many years ago will be fulfilled. They will meet again in the living hell called Dachau.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ***WINNER, 2011 Golden Crown Literary Award - Anthology Reconciling queerness with religion has always been an enormous challenge. When the religion is Orthodox Judaism, the task is even more daunting. This anthology takes on that challenge by giving voice to genderqueer Jewish women who were once silenced—and effectively rendered invisible—by their faith. Keep Your Wives Away from Them tells the story of those who have come out, who are still closeted, living double lives, or struggling to maintain an integrated "single life" in relationship to traditional Judaism—personal stories that are both enlightening and edifying. While a number of films and books have explored the lives of queer people in Orthodox and observant Judaism, only this one explores in depth what happens after the struggle, when the real work of building integrated lives begins. The candor of these insightful stories in Keep Your Wives Away from Them makes the book appealing to a general audience and students of women’s, gender, and LGBTQ studies, as well as for anyone struggling personally with the same issue. Contributors include musician and writer Temim Fruchter, Professor Joy Ladin, writer Leah Lax, nurse Tamar Prager, and the pseudonymous Ex-Yeshiva Girl. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alongside the formal development of Judaism from the eleventh through the sixteenth centuries, a robust Jewish folk religion flourished—ideas and practices that never met with wholehearted approval by religious leaders yet enjoyed such wide popularity that they could not be altogether excluded from the religion. According to Joshua Trachtenberg, it is not possible truly to understand the experience and history of the Jewish people without attempting to recover their folklife and beliefs from centuries past. Jewish Magic and Superstition is a masterful and utterly fascinating exploration of religious forms that have all but disappeared yet persist in the imagination. The volume begins with legends of Jewish sorcery and proceeds to discuss beliefs about the evil eye, spirits of the dead, powers of good, the famous legend of the golem, procedures for casting spells, the use of gems and amulets, how to battle spirits, the ritual of circumcision, herbal folk remedies, fortune telling, astrology, and the interpretation of dreams. First published more than sixty years ago, Trachtenberg's study remains the foundational scholarship on magical practices in the Jewish world and offers an understanding of folk beliefs that expressed most eloquently the everyday religion of the Jewish people.

Book excerpt: When her father passed away in 2006, Linda Cohen’s busy life as a mother, wife, and entrepreneur came to a screeching halt. She took a spiritual sabbatical to work through her grief, and she came out of it resolved to embark upon a project: perform one thousand acts of kindness—mitzvahs—to honor her father’s memory. 1,000 Mitzvahs shares Cohen’s two-and-a-half-year journey from sorrow to inspiration through simple daily acts of kindness. She presents each mitzvah as a short vignette, and the myriad forms they take—from helping the elderly to donating to good causes to baking and collecting food for others—highlight the many ways in which one person can touch the lives of others. As she pursues her quest, Cohen finds that her life is improved by these small acts—that every time she goes out of her way to do something good for someone else, she enhances her own well-being. More than a touching story of a daughter’s love for her father, 1,000 Mitzvahs is a testament to the transformational power of kindness, and a call to arms for those who would like to follow in Cohen’s footsteps with their own mitzvahs—no matter how large or how small.

Book excerpt: As the twentieth century dawns in NYC, the top-secret Ghost Precinct pursues justice beyond the earthly realm in this paranormal historical mystery series. The ethereal denizens of New York owe a great debt to Eve Whitby, the young medium who leads an all-female team of spiritualists in the police department’s Ghost Precinct. Without her efforts on behalf of the incorporeal, many souls would have been lost or damned by means both human and inhuman. But now Eve faces an enemy determined to exorcise the city’s ghostly population once and for all. Albert Prenze is supposed to be dead. Instead he is very much alive, having assumed the identity of his twin brother Alfred, and taken control of the family’s dubiously acquired fortune. To achieve his vicious ends, Albert plots to twist Eve’s abilities into his own psychic weapon—a weapon that not only poses a threat to spirits but to everyone she cares for, including her beloved Detective Horowitz . . . “Smart, boundlessly creative gaslamp fantasy.” —RT Book Reviews on Eterna and Omega “Will have readers chomping at the bit for more.” —Suspense Magazine on Eterna and Omega

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Way of Saint James: Journey to America is the story about a family with origins in Spain and their journey to America, including the United States of America and Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos (the United Mexican States). The story focuses on the lives of two men, Mihail Gurevich and Baltazar de la Vega. Their families’ background, history, and the lives they led in Europe under conditions that motivated both men to immigrate to America to seek a better life are told. Both men departed when they were young and overcame several obstacles with a resolve to achieve a life in which they could live in freedom and prosper with hard work and dedication toward family. Both individuals were products of not only their place of birth but also the societies in which they lived. Both left what could have been a life not confronted by danger and the unknown. Both chose to venture forth, accepting whatever challenges and risks life may present to them. Their journeys occurred against the larger history of Europe in which they lived. Their journey is similar to the mystical El Camino de Santiago, the Way of Saint James, which served as a metaphor of their quest.
