Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates the consequences of economic, social, environmental and cultural change on people living and working within Teesside in the North-East of England. It assesses the lived experiences, working lives, health and cultural perspectives of residents and key stakeholders in the wake of serious de-industralisation in the region. The narrative is embedded within the long-term industrial history of Stockton: an area once dominated by steel, coal and chemical industries. This past still continues to shape its future and influences the ways in which that future is conceived and envisioned. The author explores a ‘biography of place’ analytical framework to offer a holistic view of the area, which considers the interaction between the social, economic, cultural, visual and environmental legacy of the community, which is firmly grounded in the past, present and future prospects of those who live and work there.

Book excerpt: The story of Middlesbrough as a town is one that dates back less than two centuries, with the emergence of the modern urban centre the product of Victorian industrialisation and rapid urban expansion. Despite this relatively short history, the fascination and pride in Middlesbrough’s heritage is as strong as that found in established historical towns, evokes poignant memories and prompts lively debates. Memories of Middlesbrough in the 1970s and 1980s includes over 100 historic photographs of many of the town’s familiar landmarks and provides an insight into a period that brought unprecedented change. Book Synopsis Teesside Cast Products by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: North East Regional Committee
Download or read book Teesside Cast Products written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: North East Regional Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-03-08 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee decided to take evidence on the steel industry after Corus's and parent company Tata's decision to mothball Teesside Cast Products at Redcar and Lackenby. Evidence outlined the serious economic devastation that would occur if the TCP plant were mothballed. The number of those made unemployed as a consequence will climb above 4,000. The Committee states that the central priority must be to find a way to return the plant to operation as soon as possible and to maintain the jobs of a highly skilled workforce until what may well be a temporary downturn has been worked through. The short-sighted decision by Corus to close the rolling mill at Redcar and Lackenby has left it unable to response flexibly to changes in the world steel market in a way that would guarantee continued production on Teesside as indeed they were warned it would. The proposal of possibly rolling slab produced at Teesside at the mill in Llanwern, South Wales has been put forward and the Committee urges the Government to continue to work with Tata and Corus and the union on both sites to explore fully the potential of this idea
