Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health service is one of the largest industries in the country. Over 3.5 million persons are active in health service and related fields. The number of jobs available is growing rapidly in many communities. Administrators of health facilities throughout the Nation are constantly looking for workers because of heavy labor turnover-as well as the growth in demand for health services. Many problems need to be considered in planning and developing programs to meet the need for manpower in the health service field. The field is made up of numerous groups and institutions that have a common goal-caring for sick people-but also some basic differences: in training and professional approach, in income patterns and wage structure, and in attitudes and goals. The needs for adjusting manpower programs to take these factors into account is complicated by the fact that methods of detecting illness and caring for patients are constantly changing. This analysis is used as the basis for projections of growth in employment in the next 10 years and of structural changes that will probably affect health jobs in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Institute of Medicine study Crossing the Quality Chasm (2001) recommended that an interdisciplinary summit be held to further reform of health professions education in order to enhance quality and patient safety. Health Professions Education: A Bridge to Quality is the follow up to that summit, held in June 2002, where 150 participants across disciplines and occupations developed ideas about how to integrate a core set of competencies into health professions education. These core competencies include patient-centered care, interdisciplinary teams, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and informatics. This book recommends a mix of approaches to health education improvement, including those related to oversight processes, the training environment, research, public reporting, and leadership. Educators, administrators, and health professionals can use this book to help achieve an approach to education that better prepares clinicians to meet both the needs of patients and the requirements of a changing health care system.

Development and industrial economists and policymakers will also see the health sector from this different and innovative perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a joint effort between the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine, this books attempts to bridge the knowledge/awareness divide separating health care professionals from their potential partners in systems engineering and related disciplines. The goal of this partnership is to transform the U.S. health care sector from an underperforming conglomerate of independent entities (individual practitioners, small group practices, clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, community health centers et. al.) into a high performance "system" in which every participating unit recognizes its dependence and influence on every other unit. By providing both a framework and action plan for a systems approach to health care delivery based on a partnership between engineers and health care professionals, Building a Better Delivery System describes opportunities and challenges to harness the power of systems-engineering tools, information technologies and complementary knowledge in social sciences, cognitive sciences and business/management to advance the U.S. health care system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining conceptual, pragmatic and operational approaches, this edited collection addresses the demand for knowledge and understanding of IT in the healthcare sector. With new technology outbreaks, our vision of healthcare has been drastically changed, switching from a ‘traditional’ path to a digitalized one. Providing an overview of the role of IT in the healthcare sector, The Digitization of Healthcare illustrates the potential benefits and challenges for all those involved in delivering care to the patient. The incursion of IT has disrupted the value chain and changed business models for companies working in the health sector, and also raised ethical issues and new paradigms about delivering care. This book illustrates the rise of patient empowerment through the development of patient communities such as PatientLikeMe, and medical collaborate platforms such as DockCheck, thus providing a necessary tool to patients, caregivers and academics alike.
