Pour y parvenir une connaissance approfondie de la technique opératoire ainsi que des propriétés des matériaux à notre disposition est impérative. Deux grandes techniques d'empreinte de prothèse fixée sont réalisées tous les jours en cabinet : la wash technique et la technique du double mélange. Tous les matériaux disponibles sur le marché ne sont ni compatibles ni interchangeables et notre choix devra se porter sur le meilleur matériau en fonction des situations cliniques. Pour comprendre quels sont les critères de qualités d'une empreinte nous reviendrons dans un premier temps sur les notions fondamentales des biomatériaux dentaires. Puis nous verrons comment optimiser notre procédé pour avoir le taux de réussite le plus haut possible. Nous devons être attentif à plusieurs stades : souvent négligée, les étapes précédent l'empreinte (déflexion gingivale, choix du porte empreinte, comblement des contres dépouilles, utilisation de surfactant et adhésif...) sont elles aussi primordiales, suivies des étapes principales per-empreinte (insertion progressive lente, respect des temps de prise...), sans oublier les étapes suivant la prise d'empreinte (désinsertion rapide uniaxiale, décontamination, coulée dans un temps donné...). Nous aborderons ensuite l'́ventail de matériaux à notre disposition. Considérant leurs propriétés intrinsèques, (élasticité, hydrophilie, viscosité), les élastomères par adition sont actuellement les matériaux les plus couramment utilisés. Enfin pour conclure nous proposerons une fiche synthétique à l'usage des étudiants, regroupant : propriétés principales, indications / contre-indications, avantage / inconvénient, relatif à chaque matériau.
