Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technological Change in the Production Process: Organizational Implications and Responses; Wp#3050-89-Bps; July 1989 The introduction of new process technologies can cause significant disruption to ongoing Operations. This paper examines the sources of such disruption and attempts to identify organizational response mechanisms effective in countering them. To better understand the nature of organizational tasks involved, two distinct characteristics of technological change technical complexity and systemic shift are identified. Results from a study of 48 new process introduction projects suggest that these characteristics are associated with the duration of disruption experienced. Traditional economic measures of project scope are shown to be relatively poor indicators of disruptive potential. Further, the organization's response to the introduction, both before and after physical installation of the new equipment, is an important determinant of project success in terms of both disrup tion experienced and operating gains achieved. However, evidence is presented to indicate that different kinds of technological changes may require different patterns of organizational response. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades an extensive array of changes and innovations have taken place in and across work organizations and networks of organizations and workers, facilitated by new technologies and technological forms. This has initiated an interest in technological change as one of the conditions for organizational action and researchers have begun to draw inspiration from a wider spectrum of conceptual issues, perspectives and theoretical traditions. This book is interested in the level of praxis and how this might be understood and theorized. It brings together a comprehensive collection of empirically-grounded and theoretically-informed research projects from studies of organizational practice which explore a number of technological changes in a variety of contexts. These are informed by contemporary debates within and across theoretical approaches including the sociology of technology, work and organizations, actor network theory, technology as text and metaphor, processual and political perspectives, social and business network-based approaches to the analysis of technology and innovation, and the social construction and shaping of technology. This book will be essential reading for researchers and advanced students within the field of technology, work and organizations and also organization studies and management studies.

Book excerpt: An authoritative collection of leading critical and contemporary writings published in the field of technology and organizations. The set spans a 50-year time period taking the reader from the first and most influential papers from the early 1950s through to some recent publications which address contemporary and emerging debates in the field at the dawn of the 21st century. Each of the 4 volumes has a particular focus upon this area of research and scholarship: the early debates; theories, paradigms and concepts; critical empirical studies; and emerging themes and future debates. The editors provide an introduction to, and overview of, the themes, debates, perspectives, theories and paradigms which characterize this area of organization studies, and set out a "route map" to help guide the reader through the four volumes.

Book excerpt: Managing Innovation: New Technology, New Products, and New Services in a Global Economy, 2nd Edition is devoted to providing a better understanding and better management of all of the causes and consequences of change that have technological implications in and around our global organizations. This text is a unique, original contribution and represents a significant alternative to the collection of chapters written by others. The second edition has new cases with a few classics from the first edition that have been retained in response to reader feedback. The key subjects that are included have been significantly updated and treated in greater depth. The number of chapters has been reduced from 12 to 10 so it is easy to adapt to almost any course or training on the subject in any discipline or to any audience. This exceptionally informative book provides a broad perspective on how technological change can be effectively managed in modern organizations. The text explains the conceptual frameworks supported by new and original case studies for start-up companies like Askmen.com, the complex challenges of managing international technology-based companies like NexPress (a joint venture of Kodak and Heidelberg) in the digital printing industry, and corporate sustainability using innovative new product technologies illustrated by the case of Evinrude’s launch of the E-tec® outboard motor. John E. Ettlie's three decades in the field of innovation as an instructor and researcher bring an exceptional perspective to this subject. His text is unique in its discussion of how technology has transformed the service sector. Few books on technology make the distinction between new offerings in manufacturing and the service sector which is emphasized in this text.

Book excerpt: This volume is concerned with the nature of new manufacturing technologies, such as CAD/CAM and robotics, as well as ap propriate methodologies for evaluating whether such technologies are financially and organizationally viable in particular contexts. The chapters included here were commissioned as papers for presen tation at The Wharton Conference on Productivity, Technology, and Organizational Innovation, which took place in Philadelphia on December 8 and 9 of 1983. The conference was sponsored by The University of Pennsylvania's Center for the Study of Organizational Innovation. There has been a surge of interest in the area of manufacturing over the past ten years as managers have come to realize that the operations function is critical to remaining competitive. New status has been given to factory and operations managers. New programs revitalizing manufacturing and distribution have been introduced in organizations. Corporate strategy is now explicitly considering operations and manufacturing functions. And the curricula of leading business schools are reflecting the rapidly advancing research on technology management and manufacturing operations. In spite of these important signs of progress, we are clearly just at the beginning of understanding the issues involved here. The present volume provides a state-of-the-art review of the realities of technology management and manufacturing strategy. As described in the Editor's Introduction, we address four topics: The Nature of New Manufacturing Technology, Innovation and Manufacturing Strategy, Productivity Management, and Technology Management and Organ ization. These issues are clearly very important themes for U.S.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to unify the economic analysis of the production process in order to understand the effects of technical change. It is both an analytical representation of the production process, taking into account the temporal, organizational, and qualitative dimensions of production, and a fact-finding model for studying the economic effects of technical change. The inclusion of temporal and organizational aspects allows the author to examine the analytical implications of recent research on the nature of firms and the characteristics of technical change, while the model is used to analyze technical changes that involve variations of scale or degrees of flexibility. This book deals with themes much discussed in recent research in industrial economics and management studies, and is an important contribution to bringing these two areas of research closer together, providing a general framework for the study of production processes.
