Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It follows the renewal of labor law in the 1970s, especially the laws on co-determination--laws that regulate and encourage joint involvement by union and management in the decision-making process of the organization. Sandberg and his colleagues present extensive case studies that discuss and analyze job design, the present strategies and future role of unions, employee participation, and local union efforts to impact organizational and technological changes. The dairy and the Postgiro cases impressively illustrate the interaction of local and central unions to influence the early stages of decision-making and planning. The engineering workshop and the sugar mill cases demonstrate that union leaders can empower and influence the workers concerned through informal collaboration, relying on local resources to provide greater independence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2005 an expert group representing the governments of Norway, Sweden and Finland, and the Saami parliaments of these countries agreed upon a draft text of a Nordic Saami Convention. Key parts of the text deal with the recognition of Saami land and resource rights. More recently the three governments have embarked on negotiations to move from this draft text to a final convention that may be adopted and ratified by all three countries. Negotiations commenced in the Spring of 2011 and should be completed within five years. This collection of essays explores the national and international dimensions of indigenous property rights and the draft Convention which recognises the Saami as one people divided by international boundaries. Part one of the book seeks to provide a global and theoretical context for these developments in the Nordic countries, with a series of essays dealing with the moral and legal reasons for recognising indigenous property interests and different conceptualisations of the relationship between indigenous peoples and settler societies, including recognition, reconciliation and pluralism. Part two of the book examines some international legal issues associated with the Convention, including the background to the Convention. Part three turns to examine aspects of the recognition of Saami property interests in each of the three Nordic states, while Part four provides some comparative experiences, examining the recognition of indigenous property rights in a number of jurisdictions, including Canada, Australia and a number of South American states. An additional essay considers gender issues in relation to indigenous property rights.

Book excerpt: The voices in this collection are primarily those of researchers and developers concerned with bringing knowledge of technological possibilities to bear on informed and effective system design. Their efforts are distinguished from many previous writings on system development by their central and abiding reliance on direct and continuous interaction with those who are the ultimate arbiters of system adequacy; namely, those who will use the technology in their everyday lives and work. A key issue throughout is the question of who does what to whom: whose interests are at stake, who initiates action and for what reason, who defines the problem and who decides that there is one. The papers presented follow in the footsteps of a small but growing international community of scholars and practitioners of participatory systems design. Many of the original European perspectives are represented here as well as some new and distinctively American approaches. The collection is characterized by a rich and diverse set of perspectives and experiences that, despite their differences, share a distinctive spirit and direction -- a more humane, creative, and effective relationship between those involved in technology's design and use, and between technology and the human activities that motivate the technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this Handbook is to produce an interdisciplinary and international benchmark text for anyone wanting to understand job quality. Job quality matters and has long and continually done so, even if the terminology used to describe it has, and continues, to vary. Debate about the future of work and job quality in the twenty-first century centres on the impact of the new digital technologies of the putative fourth industrial revolution. This debate compounds existing concerns about the restructuring of employment and, importantly, a worrying proliferation of poor-quality jobs, often within the context of neo-liberal political-economic hegemony since the early 1980s or the economic crisis that followed the Global Financial Crisis of the late 2000s. Job quality is offered as a solution to challenges such as health, welfare, productivity, innovation, economic competitiveness, democracy and democratic participation, Bildung/cultivation, societal equality, individual and collective quality of life, and environmental sustainability. As job quality is a key factor in addressing these and the other challenges, it needs to be understood in all its complexity in terms of what it affects as well as what affects it. This Handbook draws together into a single volume: first, an explicit focus on job quality both as a significant factor in and of itself and as producing instrumental effects on a range of other processes and outcomes; second, a catalogue of the diverse range of multiple contributions and applications related to job quality; and third, the complexity and multiple interpretations of the concept of job quality. Each chapter provides distinct responses to the question of why job quality matters, coupled to a contention about for whom or for what job quality matters most. As the chapters with their respective answers and arguments attest, there are a range of ways in which job quality is relevant to an equally broad range of social, economic, and political concerns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on a five-year study of Swedish companies (including those based in the U.S.), public agencies, and national leaders. Michael Maccoby's own contributions provide an in-depth look at the sociotechnical breakthroughs in Sweden, including the first attempt to change the traditional assembly line so that workers would not be treated as a part of the machine. He and his collaborators then trace the development as it was further enhanced at the Uddevalla operation, where self-managed worker teams put together entire cars and are responsible for quality and other management functions. They also examine the Volvo Truck corporation, its successful re-organization of White Motors in the competitive U.S. market, and the development of the Volvo General Motors Heavy Truck Corporation. Sweden at the Edge is an inspiring account of the innovative approach taken by a unified country's ambition to provide employment and to improve working conditions for all its citizens. The authors devote equal time to the problems of executives and middle management, and point to the success of the SAS operation, which, under the direction of Jan Carlzon has become the world model for service management. This book will find a welcome audience in scholars and students of multinational corporations and management.
