This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. The Idea behind the workshop was that of calling attention to the necessity of studying long term tendencies In economic growth. We believe that actual growth processes In capitalistic economies are not smooth phenomena and also that the evolution of the economy Is characterized by long term fluctuations as well as by trade cycles. It Is now common place to argue that this point of view was revived after 1973 In consequence of the economic difficulties experienced by Industrialized countries while It has a much older origin as Its roots can be pushed back at least to the Great Depression of the 1930's. In preparing this workshop we selected two main approaches (as reflected In the title of this book) that have been proposed In the last ten years to deal with the causes of long term fluctuations, namely the ··technologlcal"' (or neo SchumpeterlanLapproach and the "'social"' approsch. What follows Is simply a rough characterization of the existing theoretical positions and It Is not meant to be an exhaustive one. The Interested reader will Immediately see that there are many differentiated positions by looking at the arguments contained In each contribution.

Book Synopsis The Economic Ideas of Marx's Capital by : Ludo Cuyvers
Download or read book The Economic Ideas of Marx's Capital written by Ludo Cuyvers and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly two hundred years have passed since the birth of Karl Marx and continuing to this day the influence of his economic views, insights and theories can still be felt. However, since the publication of Das Kapital, the scientific community has not been sitting idle – it is time to evaluate Marx as an economist and explore what he can bring to modern economic thinking, particularly post-Keynesian economics. Starting with Marx’s schemes of reproduction, which, it is shown, are the basis of the linear model of production as used since the 1960s by Piero Sraffa, Michio Morishima and others, the book reviews and assesses Marx’s major economic theses. These include: the labour theory of value; accumulation and technical change and its impact on labour; the concept of unproductive labour; the tendential falling rate of profits; the evolution and determinants of the share of wages in national income; as well as short-run and long-run economic dynamics. The Economic Ideas of Marx's Capital updates the theses of the labour theory of value and the conditions for balanced growth using the recent scholarly literature, and also further develops issues related to Marx’s concept of productive labour. Moreover, the book analyses the intellectual relationship of Marx’s economic theory with post-Keynesian neo-Marxism, particularly in the writings of Michal Kalecki, Joan Robinson and others. By doing so, the book shows the need and possibilities of integrating major insights of Marxist and post-Keynesian theory. This volume will be of interest to those who wish to explore Marx’s economic theories through a non-ideological approach, as well as students of Marxist economics, post-Keynesian economics and the history of economic thought.

Book Synopsis The Theory and Practice of Third World Solidarity by : Darryl C. Thomas
Download or read book The Theory and Practice of Third World Solidarity written by Darryl C. Thomas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-02-28 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the development of Third World solidarity within the broader historical context of changing hegemonic power systems, from Pax Britannia to Pax Americana. Thomas focuses on the political, economic, and racial structures that are fundamental to hegemonic supremacy over peripheral and semiperipheral states, and he analyzes the divergent modes of Third World incorporation (subordination) into the world system. He concludes that the racial structure of global apartheid that dominated the world system during the colonial period is re-emerging under the rubric of a New World Order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings reflect the state-of-the-art of long-term fluctuations in economic growth as well as discussing promising areas of research in this field. The unique combination of participants from East and West (including the People's Republic of China) is a guarantee for wide coverage and unusual insights. The problems treated range from the identification of long-term fluctuations in developing and developed countries in both East and West to their relationship to important economic variables (profit, prices, money supply). Particular attention is focused on structural changes and the role of technological development in the light of the long-term fluctuation concept. It is interesting to follow the treatment of this issue by scientists with different orientations. The role of financial and monetary variables is also analyzed by leading researchers in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains selected papers presented at the "International Workshop on Computationally Intensive Methods in Simulation and Op th th timization" held from 23 to 25 August 1990 at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (nASA) in La~enburg, Austria. The purpose of this workshop was to evaluate and to compare recently developed methods dealing with optimization in uncertain environments. It is one of the nASA's activities to study optimal decisions for uncertain systems and to make the result usable in economic, financial, ecological and resource planning. Over 40 participants from 12 different countries contributed to the success of the workshop, 12 papers were selected for this volume. Prof. A. Kurzhanskii Chairman of the Systems and Decision Sciences Program nASA Preface Optimization in an random environment has become an important branch of Applied Mathematics and Operations Research. It deals with optimal de cisions when only incomplete information of t.he future is available. Consider the following example: you have to make the decision about the amount of production although the future demand is unknown. If the size of the de mand can be described by a probability distribution, the problem is called a stochastic optimization problem.
Book Synopsis Computer-Aided Transit Scheduling by : Martin Desrochers
Download or read book Computer-Aided Transit Scheduling written by Martin Desrochers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of papers presented at the Fifth International Workshop on Computer Aided Scheduling of Public Transport, which was held in Montreal from August 19th to the 23rd, 1990. Since the first Workshop in Chicago in 1975 the field had matured considerably. In 1975, there were no presentations that described systems which had been implemented and used on a regular basis. By 1980, in Leeds, and certainly by 1983, in Montreal, several systems were in regular use. They were based on both heuristics and mathematical programming techniques. In 1990, there were more than one hundred transit companies using computer-aided scheduling tools in their regular operations. The scope of the Workshop was broadened in 1987, in Hamburg, so that topics related to scheduling may be introduced. We find, for example, in this book several papers on the technology related to the collection of data and/or the data bases required for scheduling and planning activities.

In language that is accessible to upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, professional economists, and public policy makers, each of the chapters takes on a specific issue of concern to all professional economists, provides empirical analysis of the issue, and then discusses the Post Keynesian view on the topic and contrasts it with the orthodox perspective. The topics covered are grouped into three main categories: empirical studies of consumption; empirical studies of business investment; and empirical studies of international economic relations.
