Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Metal Surface Treatment and Protection deals with the principles of metal surface treatment and protection. Topics covered range from electrodeposition and hot dip coating to diffusion and non-metallic coatings, as well as oxide and conversion coatings. The theory of corrosion protection is also discussed. Comprised of eight chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the corrosion of metals and the scope of protection against corrosion, followed by a detailed treatment of electrodeposition. The discussion then turns to the principles of hot dipping as a coating method; the formation of a diffusion coating; and the role of a non-metallic coating in corrosion protection. Subsequent chapters focus on the protection of oxide films against corrosion by means of anodizing, phosphatizing, and the use of tin free steel; testing and selection of a particular coating for corrosion resistance applications; and the theory of corrosion protection. This book is intended for metal-finishing scientists and students of metallurgy and metal finishing.

Book excerpt: Surface finishing is a broad range of industrial processes that alter the surface of a manufactured item to achieve a certain property. Currently, the trend is towards surface treatments. Surface engineering techniques are generally used to develop a wide range of functional properties, including physical, chemical, electrical, electronic, magnetic, mechanical, wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant properties at the required substrate surfaces. In general, coatings are desirable, or even necessary, for a variety of reasons including economics, material conservation, unique properties, or the engineering and design flexibility which can be obtained by separating the surface properties from the bulk properties. Surface engineered products thus increase performance, reduce costs, control surface properties independently of the substrate and medium, thus offering an enormous potential in the finishing Industry. Electrodepositing of metals is a very significant industrial process. Electroplating is both an art and science .It entailed adhering a thin metal coating to an object by immersing it into an electrically charged solvent containing the dissolved plating metal. Electroplating served a number of functions, such as protecting from corrosion and wear, decoration, and electrical shielding. Anodizing most closely resembles standard electroplating. Anodizing or anodizing is an electrolytic passivation process used to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the surface of metal parts. Anodizing increases corrosion resistance and wears resistance, and provides better adhesion for paint primers and glues than bare metal. Anodic films are most commonly applied to protect aluminium alloys. The aim of this handbook is to give the reader a perspective on several metal surface treatment techniques which are generally followed in the finishing Industry. This is a unique compilation and it draws together in a single source technical principles of surface science and surface treatments technologies of plastics, elastomers, and metals along with various formulae of bath solutions, current density, deposit thickness, manufacturing processes, various ingredients used in these processes. It is a very useful guide for the readers, engineers, scientists, practitioners of surface treatment, researchers, students, entrepreneurs and others involved in materials adhesion and processing.

Book excerpt: The present volume of Modern Aspects of Electrochemistry is composed of four chapters covering topics having relevance both in corrosion science and materials engineering. All of the chapters provide comprehensive coverage of recent advances in corrosion science. The first chapter, by Maurice and Marcus, provides a comprehensive review on the structural aspects and anti-corrosion properties of passive films on metals and alloys. These authors look at recent experimental data collected by in-situ microscopic techniques coupled with electrochemical methods. A detailed description is given of the nucleation and growth of 2-dimensional passive films at earlier stages, their effect on the corrosion properties of metal surfaces, and the nanostructures of- dimensional passive films. On the basis of the experimental data reviewed, the authors present a model for passivity breakdown and pit initiation, which takes into account the preferential role of grain boundaries. In Chapter 2, Takahashi and his co-workers give a specialized account on the electrochemical and structural properties of anodic oxide films formed on aluminum. In addition to the electrochemical corrosion-related problems of anodic oxide films, the chapter reviews state-of-the-art research of nano-/mic- fabrications based on anodizing treatments combined with chemical/mechanical processes such as laser irradiation, atomic force micro-probe processing and thin film deposition techniques.

Book excerpt: As an instructor in various finishing courses, I have frequently made the statement over the years that "In the field of metal finishing there is very little black and white, just a great deal of grey. It is the purpose of the instructor to familiarize the student with the beacons that will guide him through this fog. " To a very considerable extent, a handbook such as this serves a similar purpose. It is also subject to similar limitations. Providing all the required information would result in a multi-volume encyclopedia rather than a usable handbook. In the pages that follow, you will therefore find frequent references to other sources where more detailed explanations or information can be found. The present goal is proper guidance and the provision ofthe most frequently required facts, not everything that is available. In the 13 years since the last edition, changes in the finishing industry have been profound but in one sense have resulted in simplifying matters rather than complicating them. Because technology has advanced to a level of complexity rendering "home brew" impracti cal in many cases, dependence on proprietary compounds has become common. Therefore, detailed solution compositions are often no longer significant or even practical. It is thus more important to provide instruction about the factors that affect the choice of the most suitable type of proprietary material.

Book excerpt: In spite of considerable efforts over the years to understand and combat materials degradation via corrosion processes, many challenges still remain both in the theoretical understanding of the phenomena and in seeking pratical solutions to the perennial problem. Progress has been slow due to the complexity of the processes and the systems involved. Fortunately, in recent years there has been a renaissance in the development of new electrochemical and optical techniques, as well as advances in instrumentation, which have greatly aided our quest to gain insight into the complex mechanisms involved in metallic corrosion and passivation. Numerous scientific meetings, symposia, and workshops have been held allover the world which attest to the frenzy of activities in corrosion science and technology. However, most of these conferences have dealt mainly with recent research results. There appeared to be a need to assess and disseminate our present state of knowledge in the field as regards measurement techniques, theory, and instrumentation. The present NATO Advanced Study Institute was therefore held in Viana do Castelo, Portugal from July 9 to 21, 1989. The Institute consisted of a series of tutorial lectures, poster sessions, and round-table discussions interspersed evenly over the two-week period. It was attended by 75 participants from several countries representing industry, government and university laboratories.

Book excerpt: Corrosion Testing for Metal Finishing provides metal finishers with a range of test methods as well as guidance in the choice of method for a particular finish. There is a wide range of corrosion test methods available, the majority being the subject of Standard Specifications or being brought to Standards status. With many product Standards there is a choice of test methods available to met the Standard requirements. It is hoped that the relevant choice may be obtained more easily as a result of the information published in this book. The book outlines the apparatus and procedure for each test method and discusses its applicability to different metals and finishes. Indications are given of the nature and extent of the corrosion which develops in the test. Reference is also made to the relevant Standards for each test method. The book begins with a discussion of the basic requirements for corrosion testing of finished metal products. Subsequent chapters are devoted to testing procedures such as humidity tests, salt fog tests, industrial atmosphere test, porosity test, and anti-perspiration tests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this second edition remains the discussion of the many diverse roles of electrochemical technology in industry. Throughout the book, the intention is to emphasize that the applications, though extremely diverse, all are on the same principles of electrochemistry and electrochemical engineer based ing. Those familiar with the first edition will note a significant increase in the number of pages. The most obvious addition is the separate chapter on electrochemical sensors but, in fact, all chapters have been reviewed thoroughly and many have been altered substantially. These changes to the book partly reflect the different view of a second author as well as comments from students and friends. Also, they arise inevitably from the vitality and strength of electrochemical technology; in addition to important improvements in tech nology, new electrolytic processes and electrochemical devices continue to be reported. In the preface to the first edition it was stated: . . . the future for electrochemical technology is bright and there is a general expectation that new applications of electrochemistry will become economic as the world responds to the challenge of more expensive energy, of the need to develop new materials and to exploit different chemical feedstocks and of the necessity to protect the environment. The preparation of this second edition, seven years after these words were written, provided an occasion to review the progress of industrial electro chemistry.

Book excerpt: Electrochemistry and Corrosion Science is a graduate level text/professional reference that describes the types of corrosion on metallic materials. The focus will be on modeling and engineering approximation schemes that describe the thermodynamics and kinetics of electrochemical systems. The principles of corrosion behavior and metal recovery are succinctly described with the aid of pictures, figures, graphs and schematic models, followed by derivation of equations to quantify relevant parameters. Example problems are included to illustrate the application of electrochemical concepts and mathematics for solving complex corrosion problems. This book differs from others in that the subject matter is organized around the modeling and predicating approaches that are used to determine detrimental and beneficial electrochemical events. Thus, this book will take a more practical approach and make it especially useful as a basic text and reference for professional engineers.

Book excerpt: Sheds new light on the significance of electrode inhomogeneity and electrochemical heterogeneity A major contribution to the field of electrochemistry, this book—based on a thorough review of the literature and author Yongjun Tan's twenty years of pioneering research—examines electrochemical heterogeneity and its effects on non-uniform electrode processes. The book focuses on localized corrosion, uneven electrodeposition, and non-uniform electrodissolution. Readers will learn all the core fundamentals, experimental methods, and engineering aspects of localized corrosion and other important heterogeneous electrode processes. In particular, readers will learn core methods to quickly calculate corrosion rates and study electrode inhomogeneity and electrochemical heterogeneity. Heterogeneous Electrode Processes and Localized Corrosion begins with a review of homogeneous electrode models and uniform corrosion measurements and then explores probing electrode inhomogeneity, electrochemical heterogeneity, and localized corrosion. Next, the book examines: Visualizing localized corrosion using electrochemically integrated multi-electrode arrays Measuring thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of localized corrosion processes Characterizing inhomogeneity and localized corrosion on coated electrode surfaces Designing experiments to study localized corrosion and its inhibition in inhomogeneous media Sensing localized electrodeposition and electrodissolution Exploring versatile heterogeneous electrode processes Throughout the book, there are case studies with maps that illustrate key aspects of heterogeneous electrode processes. In addition, the author provides plenty of examples that enable readers to fully grasp core concepts of electrochemical heterogeneity and its relationship to non-uniform electrode processes. Reviewing the experimental findings presented in this book, electrochemists will gain a better appreciation and understanding of the fundamental significance of electrode inhomogeneity and electrochemical heterogeneity.
