Book Synopsis Nondestructive Methods for Material Property Determination by : C.O. Ruud
Download or read book Nondestructive Methods for Material Property Determination written by C.O. Ruud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest in materials property determination by nondestructive means is increasing especially for in-process and in-service inspection of structural and electronic materials and components. Such attention is due to several factors, including increased automation of manufacturing processes, the demand for greater reliability in consumer products and military hardware, and more severe demands on the performance of materials. This book represents the proceedings for the Symposium on Nondestructive Hethods for Haterial Property Determination held April 6 to 8, 1983, at the Hotel Hershey in Hershey, Pennsylvania. That symposium was one of the first meetings concerned specifically with nondestructive material property determination (characteriza tion). Its purpose was to stimulate intercourse between researchers, engineers, and theoreticians so as to focus upon the multidiseiplinary problems of advancing the state of the art in this area. The papers in the book are concerned mainly with acoustic (including ultrasonic), magnetic, electrical, and x-ray diffraction techniques and applications. Hany of the papers describe well developed technologies that are currently in practical application, while others discuss concepts which will never emerge from the laboratory but perhaps will provide the groundwork for more practical ideas.

Book excerpt: The three volumes of this handbook treat the fundamentals, technology and nanotechnology of nitride semiconductors with an extraordinary clarity and depth. They present all the necessary basics of semiconductor and device physics and engineering together with an extensive reference section. Volume 1 deals with the properties and growth of GaN. The deposition methods considered are: hydride VPE, organometallic CVD, MBE, and liquid/high pressure growth. Additionally, extended defects and their electrical nature, point defects, and doping are reviewed.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to Composite Materials by : D. Hull
Download or read book An Introduction to Composite Materials written by D. Hull and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-08-13 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition has been greatly enlarged and updated to provide both scientists and engineers with a clear and comprehensive understanding of composite materials. In describing both theoretical and practical aspects of their production, properties and usage, the book crosses the borders of many disciplines. Topics covered include: fibres, matrices, laminates and interfaces; elastic deformation, stress and strain, strength, fatigue crack propagation and creep resistance; toughness and thermal properties; fatigue and deterioration under environmental conditions; fabrication and applications. Coverage has been increased to include polymeric, metallic and ceramic matrices and reinforcement in the form of long fibres, short fibres and particles. Designed primarily as a teaching text for final-year undergraduates in materials science and engineering, this book will also interest undergraduates and postgraduates in chemistry, physics, and mechanical engineering. In addition, it will be an excellent source book for academic and technological researchers on materials.

Book Synopsis Analytical Methods High-Melting Metals by :
Download or read book Analytical Methods High-Melting Metals written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In solid state physics and in materials science the investigation of the connection between the properties of solids and their microstructure is of major importance. For crystalline materials this connection is related to the lattice structure, and it can be shown convinc ingly that the material properties depend on deviations from the ideal lattice structure in the majority of cases. For this reason a reliable detection and analysis of defects in "nearly perfect" crystals is necessary, and a sufficient spatial resolution of the methods applied is required. Because electrons on the one hand strongly interact with the matter to be investigated and on the other hand can easily be focused electron-optical methods are very advantageous for this purpose. They are used in the diffraction mode, in the imaging mode and in the spectroscopic mode. The attainable high lateral resolution in the imaging mode makes the application of electron microscopy especially effective. Although already valuable information on crystal defects can be gained by using the routine technique of diffraction contrast imagingl-3) which has a resolution of some 4 10 nm - in the special weak-beam technique ) of some nm -, the detection of crystal defects and inhomogeneities, resp. on an atomic or molecular level by the aid of high resolution electron microscopy gets increasing importance.

This book was released on 1987-02-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vasopressin is a hormone which has an increasingly important profile. Not only does it play a physiologically significant role in renal water regulation but it also has other renal actions and plays a role in overall cardiovascular control. Even more interesting is the recent growing interest in its potential effects on the brain, notably its influence on specific behaviours. This monograph about the polypeptide vasopressin covers all aspects relating to the production, control of release, and actions of this molecule within the body, including its roles as a hormone and as a central neurotransmitter. A consideration of the evolution of the molecule across the species and a brief historical perspective are also included. Clinical conditions associated with hypo- and hyper-production states are considered together with aspects of treatment, in addition to other clinical correlates./a
Book Synopsis Advanced Ceramics for Dentistry by : Saso Sturm
Download or read book Advanced Ceramics for Dentistry written by Saso Sturm and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microstructure characterization of advanced ceramics involves qualitative and quantitative analysis of surface topography, porosity, crystal defects, and interfaces. The structure of the surface controls interaction of ceramics with its surroundings, such as adhesion, gas adsorption, and electron exchange, which play an important role in determining overall properties of a material. Pores in ceramic materials originate from incomplete densification during the sintering process. Their presence interferes with functional properties such as mechanical strength, optical transparency, electrical conductivity, and dielectric response. Crystal defects mostly form either as a result of imperfections during the crystal growth process or as a consequence of structural phase transitions. They generally affect most functional properties of materials. So-called extended defects are interfaces that are boundaries between two solids. The most widespread tools for characterization of ceramic microstructures are microscopic techniques involving optical microscopy, different types of electron microscopy, and various scanning-probe methods. This chapter gives a brief introduction of the features of ceramic microstructure and the corresponding techniques for characterizing them.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All existing introductory reviews of mineralogy are written accord ing to the same algorithm, sometimes called the "Dana System of Mineralogy". Even modern advanced handbooks, which are cer tainly necessary, include basic data on minerals and are essentially descriptive. When basic information on the chemistry, structure, optical and physical properties, distinguished features and para genesis of 200-400 minerals is presented, then there is practically no further space available to include new ideas and concepts based on recent mineral studies. A possible solution to this dilemma would be to present a book beginning where introductory textbooks end for those already famil iar with the elementary concepts. Such a volume would be tailored to specialists in all fields of science and industry, interested in the most recent results in mineralogy. This approach may be called Advanced Mineralogy. Here, an attempt has been made to survey the current possibilities and aims in mineral mater investigations, including the main characteristics of all the methods, the most important problems and topics of mineralogy, and related studies. The individual volumes are composed of short, condensed chap ters. Each chapter presents in a complete, albeit condensed, form specific problems, methods, theories, and directions of investigations, and estimates their importance and strategic position in science and industry.
