Book excerpt: From the richest Romans to the nineteenth century's robber barons to today's bankers and tech billionaires, Sam Wilkin offers Freakonomics-esque insight into what it really takes to make a fortune. These stories of larger-than-life characters, their strategies, and the sacrifices they made reveal how history's very wealthiest did it--whether it was through taking advantage of legal loopholes, working around bureaucratic systems, or creating obstacles in order to defeat the competition. Wealth Secrets ventures beyond what you already know and shows how the roughly 0.0001 percent who have achieved billionaire status actually got to the top. Thought-provoking and rigorous, with a smart sense of humor and a wealth of cocktail-party trivia at his fingertips, Wilkin reveals that behind almost every great fortune is a "wealth secret"--a moneymaking technique used only by those focused exclusively on huge returns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronicling his 13 years as CEO of Circuit City during its most successful time and sharing his insightful analysis of its downfall, Alan Wurtzel imparts a wisdom that is a must-read for anyone even remotely interested in business. “Good to Great to Gone illustrates the vital importance of listening to your customers. Without them your company has nothing.” ―Tony Hsieh, New York Times bestselling author of Delivering Happiness and CEO of Zappos.com, Inc. How did Circuit City go from a Mom and Pop store with a mere $13,000 investment, to the best performing Fortune 500 Company for any 15-year period between 1965 and 1995, to bankruptcy and liquidation in 2009? What must leaders do not only to take a business from good to great, but to avoid plummeting from great to gone in a constantly evolving marketplace? For almost 50 years, Circuit City was able to successfully navigate the constant changes in the consumer electronics marketplace and meet consumer demand and taste preferences. But with the company’s subsequent decline and ultimate demise in 2009, former CEO Alan Wurtzel has the rare perspective of a company insider in the role of an outsider looking in. Believing that there is no singular formula for strategy, Wurtzel emphasizes the “Habits of Mind” that influence critical management decisions. With key takeaways at the end of each chapter, Wurtzel offers advice and guidance to ensure any business stays on track, even in the wake of disruption, a changing consumer landscape, and new competitors. Part social history, part cautionary tale, and part business strategy guide, Good to Great to Gone: The 60 Year Rise and Fall of Circuit City features a memorable story with critical leadership lessons.

Book Synopsis Validation of Experimental Electronics Selection Battery by : Robert S. Andrews
Download or read book Validation of Experimental Electronics Selection Battery written by Robert S. Andrews and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accelerated use of electronic systems and equipment in the Army has generated an increasing requirement for means of selecting personnel who can successfully complete electronics training courses and satisfactorily perform in highly critical electronics positions. The present publication summarizes research accomplished in several integrated studies which culminated in development of an experimental electronics selection battery of 15 tests. The component experimental measures--three information, five reasoning ability, six noncognitive ability, one personality background--were evaluated in conjunction with the operational Army Classification Battery (ACB) for effectiveness in differentiating between potential for electronics (high complexity) MOS and electrical (low complexity) MOS. Three measures, two which were derived from a single instrument--the Personal Inventory for Electronics-emerged as the most promising predictors of success in Electronics MOS. The third measure, RME, was composed of radio, mathematics, and electronics information items from several of the tests. These measures will be included in comprehensive studies of experimental and operational predictors as part of the total classification battery and aptitude area system.
