Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This state-of-the-practice report on the design and development of roads and airfields is the eighth monograph in a series prepared by the Technical Council on Cold Regions Engineering of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Previous reports in the series covered such topics as frost action and its control embankment design, and arctic coastal processes. This book discusses such topics as: 1) Route-location/siting; 2) frost action; 3) design for permafrost conditions; 4) low temperature cracking; 5) maintenance; 6) use of geosynthetics; and 7) materials specifications and testing. This monograph contributes a substantial amount of new material to the Cold Regions Engineering series.

Book Synopsis Construction in Cold Regions by : Terry T. McFadden
Download or read book Construction in Cold Regions written by Terry T. McFadden and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1992-04-16 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written as a reference on effective engineering practice for construction activities in Arctic and Sub-Arctic regions. It is based on many sources around the world including the Soviet Union and China where people live and work in very low temperatures. Provides a broad look at overall problems found by engineers, contractors and builders, including case histories that illustrate actual projects throughout the cold regions of the world.

Book Synopsis Dikes and Revetments by : Kristian Pilarczyk
Download or read book Dikes and Revetments written by Kristian Pilarczyk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-lying countries, such as the Netherlands, are strongly dependent on good and safe sea defences. In the past, the design of dikes and revetments was mostly based on vague experience, rather than on general valid calculation methods. The demand for reliable design methods for protective structures has, in the Netherlands, resulted in increased research in this field. These contributions have been prepared by Dutch experts participating in the study groups of the Technical Advisory Committee on Water Defences. The book opens with an outline of general strategy and methodology on sea defences, illustrated in the following chapters by technical information on specific items and Dutch experience, and it ends with more general aspects such as probabilistic approach, integral (multifunctional) design, management & safety assessment. Together, these chapters provide an almost complete technical overview of the items needed for the design and maintenance of dikes and revetments. The enclosed CRESS-program allows for an initial estimation of hydraulic loads and preliminary design.
Book Synopsis Thermal Design Considerations in Frozen Ground Engineering by : Thomas G. Krzewinski
Download or read book Thermal Design Considerations in Frozen Ground Engineering written by Thomas G. Krzewinski and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Technical Council on Cold Regions Engineering of ASCE. The design of engineering projects in frozen ground requires thermal design considerations in addition to standard geotechnical design. Factors that influence the thermal characteristics of a site include climatological data, microclimatic characteristics, local hydrology, soil properties, and disturbance. This monograph presents ground temperature observations, procedures for temperature monitoring, analytical methods for ground thermal regime calculations, and ground thermal properties. Active and passive techniques for ground temperature control and ground thawing methods are also presented, followed by case histories of ground temperature effects.

Book Synopsis Transport Processes in Porous Media by : Jacob Bear
Download or read book Transport Processes in Porous Media written by Jacob Bear and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 807 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited lectures presented during the NATO/ASI conducted in Pullman, Washington, July 9-18, 1989. This is the third in a series of NATO/ASIs on transport phenomena in porous media. The first two, which took place at Newark, Delaware in 1982 and 1985, are devoted to various topics related to the Fundamentals of Transport Processes in Porous Media. The contents of the books resulting from previous NATO/ASIs are given at the end of this book. Transport of extensive quantities such as mass of a fluid phase, mass of chemical species carried by a fluid phase, energy and electric charge in porous media, as encountered in a large variety of engineering disciplines, is an emerging interdisciplinary field. The groundwater flow, the simultaneous flow of gas, oil and water in petroleum reservoirs, the movement and accumulation of pollutants in the saturated and unsaturated subsurface zones, thermal energy storage in reservoirs, land subsidence in response to charges in overburden loads, or to pumping of fluids from underground formations, wave propagation in seismic investigations or as produced by earthquakes, chemical reactors, water flow through sand filters and the movement of fluids through kidneys, may serve as examples of fields in which the theory of transport in porous media is employed.
