Book Synopsis Market-Based Instruments for Water Pollution Control in the People’s Republic of China by : Asian Development Bank
Download or read book Market-Based Instruments for Water Pollution Control in the People’s Republic of China written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the current state of water pollution and water pollution management strategies in the People's Republic of China (PRC). It also provides specific recommendations for implementing market-based policy instruments, such designed to mitigate water pollution and its negative effects. Market-based instruments such as water quality trading, fees and taxation, and public-private partnerships, have been tested internationally and in the PRC, and may be used as guide in implementing positive environmental policy reforms in the country. Success with such instruments provides a blueprint for developing more sophisticated water pollution control strategies using policy innovations to achieve greater benefits at lower costs. The Asian Development Bank is providing technical assistance to aid the government in its quest to identify the best possible options for ensuring clean water for its citizens. Experiences gained in the PRC can be relevant to practitioners in the other developing countries as well.

Book Synopsis Environmental Issues in China Today by : Hidefumi Imura
Download or read book Environmental Issues in China Today written by Hidefumi Imura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic development and environmental issues in China are attracting more and more attention internationally as the country’s large population and vast demands for food, energy, water, minerals, and other resources play an increasingly important role in deciding the fate of the world. There is great interest in learning more about environmental issues in China, but it is not easy to obtain accurate, relevant information because the issues are diverse and are complex phenomena resulting from the interconnections among natural resource constraints and political, social, and institutional systems. This book originally was published in Japanese with the aim of providing Japanese readers with a holistic picture of what was taking place in China with respect to its air, water, energy, and land. The author then prepared an English edition of the same material to use as a book of readings for the Global Environmental Leaders Program at Nagoya University, where he taught many students from Asia and Europe. The book covers the most important environmental issues in China—climatic change, water, air, energy, and resources—together with ongoing policy responses, based on the author’s active involvement in a number of study projects and international cooperation projects in that country. This volume will help readers to understand the causes and results of environmental problems in China and will encourage them to think more deeply about the environmental implications of the country’s rapid economic growth.

Download or read book Green Benches written by Tun Lin and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid economic growth of the People's Republic of China (PRC) over the last 30 years has generated many environmental problems and a concomitant rise in the number of environmental disputes. Until 1989, legal cases arising from these disputes were usually heard in the people's courts of general jurisdiction. In that year, however, the development of the environment court system accelerated, leading to the creation of 11 such courts for pilot cases, a sign of the high priority the PRC has given to environmental protection over the past two decades. This publication examines the effectiveness of environment courts in the PRC and elsewhere, so that the lessons learned can be applied in the PRC and in other developing countries. It also recommends ways to promote environmental justice in the PRC, given that the 11 environment courts are no longer enough to handle the rapidly increasing caseload throughout the country.
Book Synopsis Environmental Policy and Governance in China by : Hideki Kitagawa
Download or read book Environmental Policy and Governance in China written by Hideki Kitagawa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on how to create an environmentally friendly society in China from the viewpoint of environmental law and policy. The authors accessed a great number of valuable sources not available in English, and interviewed various scholars and public officials, in order to analyze the environmental policies in China while comparing some of the features to Japan. The book stresses the importance of introducing a brand-new policy of central and local government, and analyses why these policies have not been executed effectively in the local society. In addition to the economy-oriented policy and spirit of the Chinese nation, which are the main causes, this book also highlights shortcomings in the inspection system, information management, and the extremely low degree of public participation as important aspects to focus on in order to tackle the current problems. The individual chapters will help readers to understand the environmental issues in China in depth, and provide guidance on resolving the issues in China and in developing countries that are now or soon will be facing the challenge of combining economic growth and environmental improvement. Air, water and soil pollution are serious challenges in China. The deterioration of the environment often leads to rioting that influences social stability, which is also a great concern to foreign investors. This book will be of interest to a professional audience such as policymakers, journalists, members of environmental NGOs, managers and employees who do business with China, as well as academic researchers and students.
Book Synopsis International Aid and China's Environment by : Katherine Morton
Download or read book International Aid and China's Environment written by Katherine Morton and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2005-12-16 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid economic growth in the world's most populous nation is leading to widespread soil erosion, desertification, deforestation and the depletion of vital natural resources. The scale and severity of environmental problems in China now threaten the economic and social foundations of its modernization. Using case studies, Morton analyzes the relationship between international and local responses to environmental problems in China, challenging the prevailing wisdom that weak compliance is the only constraint upon local environmental management in China. It advances two interrelated discussions: first, it constructs a conceptual framework for understanding the key dimensions of environmental capacity. This is broadly defined to encompass the financial, institutional, technological and social aspects of environmental management. Second, the book presents the results of an empirical inquiry into the implementation of donor-funded environmental projects in both China's poorer and relatively developed regions. By drawing upon extensive fieldwork, it seeks to explain how, and under what conditions, international donors can strengthen China's environmental capacity, especially at the local level. It will be of interest to those studying Chinese politics, environmental studies and international relations.
Book Synopsis Toward a National Eco-compensation Regulation in the People's Republic of China by : Asian Development Bank
Download or read book Toward a National Eco-compensation Regulation in the People's Republic of China written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian Development Bank and the National Development and Reform Commission of the People's Republic of China (PRC) undertook a study on eco-compensation regulations development in the country, on which this publication is based. The study examined the PRC's theory, practice, and legislation governing eco-compensation in selected ecological areas to map out the scope and content of a national eco-compensation regulation. Pursuit of its higher agenda of ecological civilization and development of its national eco-compensation regulation will require the PRC to capture the diversity that subnational projects have tapped, integrate its experience with eco-compensation at all levels of government into a coherent national regulatory framework, and harmonize this framework with existing laws and other legal instruments.
