Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Productivity by : David Feeny
Download or read book The Political Economy of Productivity written by David Feeny and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic history of Thailand between 1880 and 1975 contrasts sharply with the development experiences of other Third World countries. Between the opening of trade in 1850 and 1941, when war halted economic activity, Thailand became a major exporter of rice in the world market. Although conditions for further growth seemed highly favourable, Thailand's rapid integration into the world economy failed to improve living standards, and rice yields actually declined. In examining the causes of the underdevelopment of Thai agriculture over the last 100 years, Feeny introduces supply and demand models of technical and institutional change to analyse why the rice export boom did not result in more development. This book, much of which is based on primary research in the Thai National Archives, is one of the few quantitative economic histories of a less developed country.

Areas covered include the economic of invention and innovation, the evolution of thought and of empirical tests of induced innovation, the evolution of thought and of the empirical tests of induced innovation, the role of demand and supply in the diffusion of technical change. Specific attention is given to an emerging body of literature that attempts to integrate the process of invention, diffusion and reinvention. The book concludes by drawing implications for research and economic development policy and will provide graduate students and professional in economics, agricultural economics, development studies and geography and technology forecasting with a sound review of the literature of technical change.
