Book excerpt: The most difficult and frustrating problem facing those responsble for the development of a sound transportation system is the one involving overall transportation facilties in the metropolitan and urban areas. The problem is at least two-fold: first, very complex studies, negotiations and agreements are necessary to achieve acceptable and satisfactory solutions; second, there is the issue of overall financing of accepted solutions. It pays to start with state-city-county cooperation, to continue with it, and to follow through with it. Another important element is the participation of the state legislature. California has a history of teamwork in road, street and highway matters among the various jurisdictions concerned. This teamwork involves financing as well as planning and construction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High skilled workers gain from face to face interactions. If the skilled can move at higher speeds, then knowledge diffusion and idea spillovers are likely to reach greater distances. This paper uses the construction of China's high speed rail (HSR) network as a natural experiment to test this claim. HSR connects major cities, that feature the nation's best universities, to secondary cities. Since bullet trains reduce cross-city commute times, they reduce the cost of face-to-face interactions between skilled workers who work in different cities. Using a data base listing research paper publication and citations, we document a complementarity effect between knowledge production and the transportation network. Co-authors' productivity rises and more new co-author pairs emerge when secondary cities are connected by bullet train to China's major cities.

This book was released on 2023-08-02 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the world of transportation, fatigue is a silent killer that can affect us all. Understanding fatigue, including how to manage it to minimize safety risk, is of great importance. However, while it is one thing to recognize that fatigue is a critical safety issue, it is quite another to set up a successful, scientifically informed fatigue risk management programme. This book is here to help. It has been carefully designed as a comprehensive reference point, bringing together international expertise from leaders in fatigue science, and showcasing valuable insights from transportation industry practitioners. The 40 authored chapters are divided into six sections, to better understand fatigue science, the consequences of fatigue in transportation, contributors to fatigue, managing fatigue and promoting alertness, real world case studies of fatigue management in practice, and future perspectives. While it is possible to read each chapter in isolation, most will be gained by reading the book as a whole. Each chapter starts with an abstract overview and concludes with summary bullet points, creating a handy "quick check" for key points. This accessible text is for those who are interested in supporting alert and safe transportation operations. It is suitable for professionals, transport managers, government advisors, policy makers, students, academics, and anyone who wants to learn more. All transport modes (road, rail, maritime and aviation) are considered. For anyone waking up to the complex challenge of fatigue management, this handbook is a must.
