Book excerpt: Nations around the globe consider physics education an important tool of economic and social development and currently advocate the use of innovative strategies to prepare students for knowledge and skills acquisition. Particularly in the last decade, a series of revisions were made to physics curricula in an attempt to cope with the changing needs and expectations of society. Educational transformation is a major challenge due to educational systems’ resistance to change. Updated curriculum content, pedagogical facilities (for example, computers in a school), new teaching and learning strategies and the prejudice against girls in physics classes are all issues that have to be addressed. Educational research provides a way to build schemas and resources to promote changes in physics education. This volume presents physics teaching and learning research connected with the main educational scenarios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are acceptable modern standards of instruction in physics? In August, 1960, 86 physicists from 32 nations met at the UNESCO HOUSE in Paris to discuss individual viewpoints and draft resolutions to represent universal thought on this subject. The speeches, papers, dicussions, exhibits, and motion pictures at the Conference mirrored the breadth and contrasts of contemporary physics instruction, vitally important to both scientifically advanced and scientifically underdeveloped nations.Speeches on methods ranged in subject matter from individual teacher-student relations to nationally televised lectures; from preparation for the specialist to techniques for informing the general public; from revision of the traditional curriculum to provision of research facilities for teachers. These suggestions and reports from around the world, presented in this book, will be helpful to all educators, and particularly to those with responsibility for training physicists. Its chapters deal with matters such as testing, selection of students, training of teachers, the use of audio-visual aids, and activities of professional organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research in Physics Education has to do with the search of solutions to the complex problem of how to improve the learning and teaching of physics. The complexity of the problem lies in the different fields of knowledge that need to be considered in the research. In fact, besides the disciplinary knowledge in physics (which must be considered from the conceptual, the historical, and the epistemological framework), one has to take into account some basic knowledge in the context of psychology and the cognitive sciences (for the general and contextual aspects of learning) and some basic knowledge in education and comunication (for what concerns teaching skills and strategies). Looking back at the historical development of the research one may recognize that the complexity of the endeavour was not clear at first but became clear in its development, which shifted the focus of the research in the course of time from physics to learning to teaching. We may say that the research started, more than 30 years ago, with a focus on disciplinary knowledge. Physicists in different parts of the western world, after research work in some field of physics, decided to concentrate on the didactical comunication of physical knowledge.

This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Physics for Purposes of General Education One of the liveliest themes of present educational discussion is that of the distinction between vocational and cultural work. According to the old ideas, certain subjects are preeminently cultural, while others are distinctly vocational; and in any scheme of general education, the cultural studies must predominate. The present insistent demand for industrial training has brought these ideas into the limelight of investigation, and has divided the forces of education into two parties, which may be called the culturalists and the vocationalists. This distinction between cultural and vocational seems to be wholly beside the mark in any true system of general education. It owes its origin to the mistaken ideas of the doctrine of formal discipline. This book is an effort to show how, in the case of physics, the two points of view may be amalgamated into one.
