For the purpose of this case study, a one-to-one device is a small portable electronic computing device. This dissertation examines how putting a one-to-one-device into the hands of every student directly affects the professional development needs of teachers as it relates to teachers' ability to integrate technology into their instruction. Specifically, this case study analyzes how professional development is perceived by teachers as it relates to their integration of one-to-one technology into instruction and what type of professional development teachers prefer in order to meaningfully implement one-to-one technology into their instruction. Hence, this dissertation addresses what type of technology professional development is necessary for the successful implementation of one-to-one devices. This case study looked at teacher self-efficacy in using technology during instruction, as well as the professional development needs teachers may have, which would allow for their effective integration of technology into instruction. The results indicate that if technology is an integral part of how a teacher delivers instruction, teachers then need to be empowered with the necessary professional development. After analyzing the teachers' perceptions of professional development as it related to one-to-one technology integration, the three themes that emerged from this case study were lack of structured professional development, unclear expectations, and attitudinal resistance to one-to-one device integration. This case study identified that the teachers in the study's school district lack the appropriate level of professional development to implement one-to-one technology meaningfully into their instruction. By identifying the problem and analyzing the data through an online survey and face-to-face interviews, the reader will be better able to understand why teachers may not be prepared to deliver instruction using one-to-one devices without a more defined vision from their district and technology professional development that will meet their individual needs. These findings are significant because they will help school districts plan the appropriate level and types of professional development opportunities that are needed to support their teachers in effectively implementing one-to-one technology into instruction.

Common excuses for the limited use of technology to support instruction include shortage of computers, lack of computer skill and computer intimidation. While these could affect the success of technology integration, it should be acknowledged that the degree of success teachers have in using technology for instruction could depend in part on their ability to explore the relationship between pedagogy and technology. This paper shows that technology integration is narrowly perceived and that such a perception might hinder teachers’ understanding of the scope of technology in education. Technology integration should be considered along with issues involved in teaching and learning. Such issues include developing learning objectives, selecting methods of instruction, feedback, and evaluation and assessment strategies including follow-up activities. The paper concluded that it is important that educators perceive technology in education as part of the pedagogical process and also recognizes the relationship between pedagogy and technology in education. The following recommendations among others were made; Designing a dynamic classroom using technology requires teachers to provide a learning environment that is colorful, engaging, exciting, interactive and energetic as a way of encouraging students to venture into the world of technology and to discover knowledge for themselves; educators are encouraged to view technology integration from a wider perspective and be reflective in their teaching as they use technology to support and facilitate instruction and that instructional technology should be identified at the planning stage just as the students’ readiness is assessed, lesson objectives identified, methods of presenting are established, and evaluation strategies are determined.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate teacher perception of technology integration in STEM and non-STEM classrooms of high school teachers of gifted and talented students and the relationship of those perceptions to actual technology use in their classrooms. This study measured teacher perception of technology integration utilizing a survey designed by combining two standardized survey tools. Data was collected through a web-based, anonymous survey. Descriptive as well as inferential statistics were analyzed. The study examined four research questions that focused on identifying the difference, if any, between STEM and nonSTEM teachers in regards to their perceptions of technology for use in their classroom and if there was a relationship between the subject a teacher is teaching and the teacher's perception of the value of technology as an instructional tool. The study also investigated years of teaching experience and teacher perception of technology integration as well as the effect of teacher perceptions of technology integration on teacher's actual use of technology. Data analysis concluded teacher perceptions of technology for use in their classrooms was not significantly different based on the subject taught. There was not a statistically significant relationship between teachers' experience and their perception of the value of technology as an instructional tool, and teacher perceptions of technology integration did not predict their actual use of technology in the classroom. The results of this study contribute to the field of gifted and talented as well as STEM pedagogy.
