Book excerpt: This dissertation, "Teachers' Perception of Leadership in School-based Management (SBM)schools: a Case Study" by Yuen-kwan, Lam, 林宛君, was obtained from The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong) and is being sold pursuant to Creative Commons: Attribution 3.0 Hong Kong License. Abstract: Abstract This dissertation adopts a qualitative approach to study the perception of six secondary teachers from two schools, with a similar background and history, of leadership in school-based management (SBM) schools. The focus of the research is to explore the views of the teachers on the changes in school administration and the structure of the school under SBM; the challenges, difficulties and skills of principals; and the leadership roles of principals under SBM. The study can supplement the limited number of researches on the roles of principals in SBM schools in Hong Kong and semi-structured interviews were conducted to obtain the information. As serving teachers now play increasingly important roles in schools and they work closely with their principals in administrative and educational matters, they can provide invaluable insight into the new roles of principals. My research has uncovered the perceptions of the teachers on leadership and the education reforms in the two schools that I studied. All the teachers confirmed that the roles of principals and senior teachers had changed under SBM and decision making had become a participative activity shared among various stakeholders. Principals and teachers need to trust one another and work collaboratively in an effective manner and schools have to develop their own unique culture. The findings of this study were limited to a description of the perception of six secondary teachers of two Hong Kong schools on the leadership roles of principals as well as some of the challenges and problems their principals encountered. It is hoped that the findings could provide educators and aspiring and practicing principals some insights into other similar situations and cases, thereby assisting the interpretation of the situations. iii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3021754 Subjects: Educational leadership - China - Hong Kong School-based management - China - Hong Kong High school teachers - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes

Book excerpt: An increasing number of developing countries are introducing School-Based Management (SBM) reforms aimed at empowering principals and teachers or at strengthening their professional motivation, thereby enhancing their sense of ownership of the school. Many of these reforms have also strengthened parental involvement in the schools, sometimes by means of school councils. SBM programs take many different forms in terms of who has the power to make decisions as well as the degree of ecision-making devolved to the school level. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As social contexts and demands change in the 21st century, pedagogies and policies must adapt to keep up. Increasing emphasis on global preparedness, competitivity, and holistic education alongside a fast-paced, ever-changing environment may make policy implementation difficult. However, Cheng asserts that it is only by understanding the current trends, visions, and issues in education policy, implementation, and research that we can reflect, adapt, and improve future initiatives. To that end, Cheng elucidates the different paradigm shifts in classrooms and pedagogy all over the world. In his exploration of third-wave paradigm shifts in education, he charts the rationales, concerns, and effects in topics such as contextualized multiple intelligences, integrated learning, national education in globalization, teacher effectiveness and development, school-based management, and systemic education reform. This book is a promising referential resource for any policy-maker, academic, and educator who knows that the only way to progress is to look at and learn from the current issues and future trends globally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia’s wealth of natural resources is being exploited at breakneck speed, and environmental awareness and knowledge among the populace is limited. This book examines how young people learn about the environment to see how education can help to develop environmental awareness and avert vast environmental destruction, not only in Indonesia, but also in the Global South more generally. Based on in-depth studies conducted in the cities of Yogyakarta and Surabaya, complemented with surveys of students in secondary schools, Environmental Education in Indonesia examines educational curricula, pedagogy and "green" activities to reveal what is currently being done in schools to educate children about the environment. The book investigates the shortcomings in environment education, including underqualified teachers, the civil service mentality, the still-pervasive chalk-and-talk pedagogy and the effect of the examination system. It also analyses the role of local government in supporting (or not) environmental education, and the contribution of environmental NGOs. The book establishes that young people are not currently being exposed to effective environmental education, and the authors propose that the best and most culturally appropriate way forward in Indonesia is to frame pro-environment behaviour and responsibility as a form of citizenship, and specifically that environmental education should be taught as a separate subject. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of contemporary Indonesia and Southeast Asia, education for sustainability and environmental education, as well as sustainability and sustainable development more generally.
