The literature describes numerous school music programs in the United States of America (USA) that include music technology in the curriculum and use technology to support music programs. However, this bigger picture does not tell us what is being experienced in each school across the USA. Case studies will help us understand the day-to-day experiences of individual schools. The study population of this investigation involved a sample of convenience, including music teachers from within one county in the Inland Northwest of the USA in close proximity to the researcher. One-on-one interview technique allowed for in-depth responses to open-ended questions. In analyzing the data, an effort was made to accurately represent the perspectives of the interview participants. Results were reported in narrative style, leading to a discussion on implications for the profession and ideas for further research. While it was reported that none of the schools offer music technology programs, all of the teachers described using technology to support music classes. Alongside the wealth of studies in this field, this investigation contributes a small glimpse of what some music teachers in the USA are facing at their schools pertaining to technology. lt is anticipated that the results of the study may inform those making decisions regarding music policy and curriculum, and the allocation of resources for technology in school music programs. Teachers might be informed by the various examples of how technology is being used in the music classroom and in student practicing outside of the classroom. There may be teachers who identify with the limitations and challenges experienced by these five teachers regarding the use of technology in their programs. The results might inform higher education curricular decisions pertaining to the preparation of teachers for using technology in school music programs. This investigation also leads to suggestions on ideas for research, including exploration of reasons for the challenges teaches face in this area and the perspectives of students on the topic"--Leaves ix-x.

The purpose of this study was to discover the ways in which music technology was used in two schools of music across the entire music curriculum for music education students. This study detailed the ways in which music technology was implemented into pedagogic practices for all students within the two schools of this study and explored the participants' perceptions and experiences related to music technology. The following research questions guided this study: How is music technology used across the school of music curriculum for music education students in each of the two universities selected? How do the participants in this study learn to use music technology? What are the issues, if any, with incorporating music technology in each of the two universities selected? A qualitative methodology was used with a multiple case study design. Data collection included interviews, field observations, and collection of artifacts. Data analysis included coding of data to reveal themes which included two large categories: learning technology and incorporating technology. The trustworthiness of the final report was established using peer review, member checks, an external audit, and reporting of bias. Results of this study include a lack of music technology integration despite faculty and administrative support to improve music technology integration. Participants were aware of the importance of music technology education and felt that its inclusion was long overdue despite the many challenges associated with integration. A list of suggestions for the profession were considered including the availability of jobs in music technology and music technology education, the need for a broader more attractive/modern curriculum in music education to include music technologies, affordable solutions for incorporating more music technology in music education studies, the effectiveness of music technology on multiple learning modes, alternative solutions to teaching about music technology to include use of community support, the need to add a music technology specialist to the music education faculty in music education programs in pre-service teacher training programs, and lastly, the importance of adding a music technology techniques class to the music education curriculum.

In the Commonwealth of Virginia, student standards and expectations are established by various accreditation agencies and government institutions. Studies addressing the use of music technology in higher education and PK-12 education have been conducted to obtain a variety of data. Studies addressing technology availability for student use in Virginia’s PK-12 public schools, however, is more limited. A mixed-methods, explanatory study was conducted for the purpose of determining the status of technology availability and use by students in PK-12 music classrooms in northern and northwestern Virginia. Surveys were sent to music educators to determine technology availability and use by students in music classrooms. Follow-up interviews were conducted to gain additional information for explaining the survey results. Analysis of results led to the following conclusions within the geographic region of the study: (a) means for funding technology for students to use in all music classrooms must be found, (b) music educators should be encouraged and supported by school administration in finding new and creative approaches to student technology use, (c) music educators need time and funding for their own music-education-specific technology training, (d) use of technology should support music learning, (e) administrators need understand the difference between learning music technology and learning music through technology, (e) teaching students to use technologies, even for music education purposes, is time consuming, and (f) students should be given opportunities to explore careers that use music technology.

The use of computers and associated compositional software in music education is frequently decontextualized from cultural and social relationships, thereby ignoring the fact that new technologies are used and developed within existing social spaces that are always already delineated along gender lines. Armstrong suggests these gender-technology relations have a profound effect on the ways adolescents compose music as well as how gendered identities in the technologized music classroom are constructed. Drawing together perspectives from the sociology of science and technology studies (STS) and the sociology of music, Armstrong examines the gendered processes and practices that contribute to how students learn about technology, the repertoire of teacher and student talk, its effect on student confidence and the issue of male control of technological knowledge. Even though girls and female teachers have technological knowledge and skill, the continuing material and symbolic associations of technology with men and masculinity contribute to the perception of women as less able and less interested in all things technological. In light of the fact that music technology is now central to many music-making practices across all sectors of education from primary, secondary through to higher education, this book provides a timely critical analysis that powerfully demonstrates why the relationship between gender and music technology should remain an important empirical consideration.

This mixed methods study utilized a survey, interviews, and artifacts to interpret to what extent teachers and principals value music education as a contributing component of the academic program. The researcher aimed to comprehend how educators perceive music when compared to other academic subjects, how underlying factors and experiences contribute to perceptions of music education, and how perceptions align between teachers and principals. The data gathered for this study drew upon practicing educators from Pennsylvania public schools who serve in primary and middle years schools. 135 participants responded to a survey distributed via email, and 10 of the respondents were selected for follow up interviews.The findings of the study indicated that classroom teachers and principals generally perceive music to be less important that other academic subjects. The findings of the study also indicated that an educator's background in music and exposure to music have an impact on their perceptions of music education, although the level of impact varies depending on the specific type of musical undertaking. The findings of the study also showed that the perceptions of the importance of music education aligned between teachers and principals: teachers and principals agreed that music was a vital component to the academic curriculum. Lastly, the findings of the study indicated that educators in K-8 schools generally value music education more than educators in K-5 schools.
