Teachers play a critical role in the failure or success of students. Different teacher characteristics are thought to have a significant impact on the potential for student success. This non-experimental correlational research study seeks to examine the potential relationships between specific teacher characteristics and student success in Algebra I as measured by the Algebra I End of Course Exam scores. This study uses ordinary least squares regression analysis to examine the effects of independent variables on successful Algebra I scores. The independent variables in this study include teacher self-efficacy rating, certification type, years of experience teaching in total and teaching Algebra I specifically, and college degree earned. This study seeks to contribute to the body of knowledge by establishing a relationship, or lack thereof, between independent variables and student success in Algebra I. By establishing the presence or absence of a correlation between these variables, school leaders will have more research-based information to affect hiring decisions and teacher placement within Algebra I content areas. Results showed that years of experience teaching Algebra I was a significant predictor for student success in Algebra I. The other variables were not found to be significant predictors. Suggestions for future research are also included.

Regression analyses of standardized state testing results allowed for identification of the most effective and least effective Algebra I teachers and schools. The study used surveys, observations, and focus group interviews to compare and contrast most effective teachers with less effective teachers. It found that the most effective algebra teachers averaged 68% of their time on new material daily; averaged seven transitions in ninety minutes; used sustaining feedback; had structured classes with a culture of mutual respect; told their students what to expect on tests and cautioned them about possible errors; emphasized problem solving and processes; and exhibited a sense of humor. These results can be used to motivate teacher and school improvement efforts.

Book excerpt: This paper reports findings from the second year of a two-year study designed to develop approaches to teaching algebra in years 9 and 10. The aim of the research was to explore and develop teaching approaches to assist students to acquire a conceptual understanding of algebra, and to document the impact of these approaches on student outcomes. Previous work (Linsell, 2009) has detailed the strategies that students use to solve equations but there has been no research to date on teaching approaches that make use of these findings. The two main components of this study were a qualitative description of teaching approaches based on videos, teachers' diaries and meeting notes, and a quantitative analysis of student outcomes based on results from a previously developed assessment tool (Linsell, Savell, Johnston, Bell, McAuslan, & Bell, 2006). Approaches to teaching were not uniform between teachers, but all made extensive use of the diagnostic assessment information and recognised that algebraic thinking pervades the entire mathematics curriculum. Assessment of the students at the end of either one or two year's participation in the study showed significant improvements in algebraic strategies and knowledge compared to baseline, though there was little improvement during the second year. Furthermore, the measures of student outcomes displayed significantly higher values for students in this study compared to year 9 and year 10 students in Secondary Numeracy Project (SNP) schools, which are fairly representative of the population.

It took place in a Title I urban high school where 75 ninth grade students and their teachers enacted the blended learning program for one semester. Students from the same high school who received face-to-face instruction alone during a previous semester served as a comparison group. Flow theory was proposed as an explanation for why the ITS program was expected to increase student engagement and improve student achievement. This quasi-experimental, mixed methods study collected data via student assessments, surveys, observation forms, questionnaires, and meeting notes. Fidelity of implementation was rated based on four components: adherence, exposure, quality of delivery, and participant responsiveness. Challenges encountered and practices used when implementing the program were characterized as first-order (external) or second-order (internal) and were analyzed to reveal themes. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to help determine effective teaching and classroom practices when addressing the mathematics achievement gap between Latino English Learners (ELs) and their White and Asian counterparts. This study sought to discover what effect different teaching strategies had on the growth in proficiency of Latino ELs on Algebra I Benchmark assessments from first quarter to fourth quarter of an academic school year. Particular areas of interest were whether explicitly structured collaborative grouping had any effect on Latino ELs' growth in Algebra I achievement. Another area of interest was what effect more traditional teacher-directed instruction and lack of structured collaborative grouping had on Latino ELs Algebra I proficiency growth. This study compared the test scores, grades, and survey results of 14 Latino ELs in two Algebra I classes where teachers used different approaches to helping students master content at a Title I school in Orange County, Calif. A mixed-methods approach was used in analyzing both quantitative test scores, grades, and Likert-type surveys as well as qualitative interview answers. Findings suggest that there was little to no difference in test score gains between the teacher who used daily structured collaborative grouping and increased direct instruction (DI) and the teacher who used less frequent group work and half as much DI. The only significant variance found was in final semester grades, with nearly all EL students in the class with more group work and DI earning a passing grade. This study recommends that collaborative group work and DI should be carefully considered, implemented, and adjusted, depending on the needs of the students. Additionally, culturally relevant approaches to teaching should be implemented in every school with high numbers of Latino ELs.
