Book excerpt: Whilst most teachers are skilled in providing opportunities for the progression of children’s learning, it is often without fully understanding the theory behind it. With greater insight into what is currently known about the processes of learning and about individual learning preferences, teachers are better equipped to provide effective experiences and situations which are more likely to lead to lasting attainment. Now fully updated, Ways of Learning seeks to provide an understanding of the ways in which learning takes place, which teachers can make use of in their planning and teaching, including: An overview of learning Behaviourism and the beginning of theory Cognitive and constructivist learning Multiple intelligences Learning styles Difficulties with learning The influence of neuro-psychology Relating theory to practice The third edition of this book includes developments in areas covered in the first and second editions, as well as expanding on certain topics to bring about a wider perspective; most noticeably a newly updated and fully expanded chapter on the influence of neuro-educational research. The book also reflects changes in government policy and is closely related to new developments in practice. Written for trainee teachers, serving teachers, and others interested in learning for various reasons, Ways of Learning serves as a valuable introduction for students setting out on higher degree work who are in need of an introduction to the topic.

Book Synopsis Learning to Live Together by : Margaret Sinclair
Download or read book Learning to Live Together written by Margaret Sinclair and published by United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization. This book was released on 2004 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study represents an attempt to interpret the aim of 'learning to live together' as a synthesis of many related goals, such as education for peace, human rights, citizenship and health-preserving behaviours. It focuses specifically on the skills, values, attitudes and concepts needed for learning to live together, rather than on 'knowledge' objectives. On the basis of a review of the literature and an examination of a number of cases from post-conflict and transition settings, this study proposes what appears to work in terms of helping students learn to become politely assertive rather than violent, to understand conflict and its prevention, to become mediators, to respect human rights, to become active and responsible members of their communities - as local, national and global citizens - to have balanced relationships with others and neither to coerce others nor be coerced, especially into risky health behaviours. While the focus is mainly on schools, the approach advocated is also applicable to non-formal education for youth and adults.

Book Synopsis Design as a Catalyst for Learning by : Meredith J. Davis
Download or read book Design as a Catalyst for Learning written by Meredith J. Davis and published by Association for Supervision & Curriculum Development. This book was released on 1997 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents findings of a 1993 study of how design in the curriculum helps students achieve national educational objectives. It also explores opportunities for expanding the role design can play in students' academic lives. Results of the 1993 study reveal how the use of design experiences in classrooms provides teachers and students with a learning construct for the next century. The book summarizes descriptive research that makes qualitative statements regarding current classroom practice and identifies effective models for using design in classrooms. The research tapped three primary sources of data: (1) a review of the literature; (2) a national qualitative survey of teachers; and (3) site visits to 10 schools. Also, the researchers conducted qualitative interviews with principals, curriculum coordinators, other school or district administrators, teachers, teachers' aides, students, and parents. The six chapters include: (1) "Learning Through Design"; (2) "Lifelong Learning"; (3) "A Strategy for Excellent Teaching"; (4) "Design in the Curriculum"; (5) "Opportunities and Challenges for Schools"; and (6) "Conclusions and Recommendations." Three appendices, a bibliography, and information about the authors, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development conclude the document. (EH)

Book Synopsis A Force for Change by : Daniel Schulman
Download or read book A Force for Change written by Daniel Schulman and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-05 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Julius Rosenwald Fund has been largely ignored in the literature of both art history and African American studies, despite its unique focus, intensity, and commitment. Spertus Museum in Chicago has organized an exhibition, guest curated by Daniel Schulman, that presents and explores the work of funded artists as well as the history of the Fund. Through it, and this accompanying collection of essays, illustrations, and color plates, we see the Fund’s groundbreaking initiative to address issues relating to the unequal treatment of blacks in American life. The book constitutes a veritable Who’s Who of African American artists and intellectuals of the first half of the twentieth century, as well as a roll call of modern contributors who represent the leading scholars in their fields, including Peter M. Ascoli, grandson and biographer of Julius Rosenwald, and Kinshasha Holman Conwill, deputy director of the National Museum of African American Art and Culture. With far-reaching influence even today, the Julius Rosenwald Fund stands alongside the Rockefeller and Carnegie funds as a major force in American cultural history.
Book Synopsis Telecommunications, Mass Media, and Democracy by : Robert W. McChesney
Download or read book Telecommunications, Mass Media, and Democracy written by Robert W. McChesney and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-26 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work shows in detail the emergence and consolidation of U.S. commercial broadcasting economically, politically, and ideologically. This process was met by organized opposition and a general level of public antipathy that has been almost entirely overlooked by previous scholarship. McChesney highlights the activities and arguments of this early broadcast reform movement of the 1930s. The reformers argued that commercial broadcasting was inimical to the communication requirements of a democratic society and that the only solution was to have a dominant role for nonprofit and noncommercial broadcasting. Although the movement failed, McChesney argues that it provides important lessons not only for communication historians and policymakers, but for those concerned with media and how they are used.

Book Synopsis Making Sense of Learning by : Norman Reid
Download or read book Making Sense of Learning written by Norman Reid and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook brings together findings from global research on teaching and learning, with an emphasis on secondary and higher education. The book is unique in that the content is selected in an original way and its presentation reflects the most recent research evidence related to understanding. The book covers and presents themes that are based tightly on worldwide research evidence, scrupulously avoiding opinion or any dependence on the personal experience of the authors. The book starts by reflecting on educational research itself. The four chapters that follow relate the story of the research that shows how all humans learn and the variations within that framework. These chapters offer a tight framework that underpins much of the rest of the text. The next four chapters look at the way school curricula are organised and how the performance of learners can be assessed. They summarise the research evidence related to thinking skills and consider the importance of practical teaching. This is followed by two chapters that draw from the extensive social psychology research on attitude development as it applies in education, and then by two chapters that summarise the research related to major issues of controversy: the performativity agenda and the issue of quality. One chapter looks at the place of statistics in education. The next two chapters look at the evidence that can support or undermine many typical education beliefs, or myths and mirages. Finally, the last chapter brings it all together and looks into the future, pointing to some areas where future research is likely to be helpful, based on current knowledge.
