This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the proceedings from the Swiss Society for Neuropathology XVIIIth International Winter Meeting on Neuropathology and Genetics of Dementia, held March 23-26, 2000, in St. Moritz, Switzerland. For more than 35 years the Swiss Society of Neuropathology has organised its traditional International Winter Meeting, whose main aim is to bring together neuropathologists and clinicians as well as neuroscientists interested in disease mechanisms. The topic of the 2000 Meeting was Neuropathology and Genetics of Dementia. A programme of invited plenary lectures of high educational value as well as platform and poster presentations given by many participants covered the broad spectrum of dementing disorders. Encouraged by the high standard of the meeting, and probably also influenced by the advent of a new Millennium, it was decided to publish the Proceedings of the 2000 Meeting in the present book.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Traumatic Brain Injury and Neurodegeneration by : R.J. Castellani
Download or read book Handbook of Traumatic Brain Injury and Neurodegeneration written by R.J. Castellani and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2020-04-24 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holbourne’s theory that rotational head movement and shear strains were limiting factors in producing acute parenchymal brain damage was a watershed moment in understanding traumatic brain injury (TBI). Long term effects, and in particular neurodegenerative proteinopathy subsequent to TBI, remain theoretical, notwithstanding the poorly understood ‘punch drunk’ syndrome of the early and mid-20th century, and the 21st century concept of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. This book, the Handbook of Traumatic Brain Injury and Neurodegeneration, has as its theme the marriage between neurodegenerative disease and neurotrauma through TBI surrogates such as sport, military service, and experimental models, and the legitimacy of that marriage. In the 32 contributions included here, this handbook not only explores the deleterious effects of genuine TBI, but also, and more importantly, the relationship between TBI and neurodegeneration. Controversy notwithstanding, there is much to be learned about the biological effects of TBI, substrates for long-term sequelae, the relationship between TBI and diverse neuropsychiatric disorders, and targets for therapy. The overall message to the neuroscience community from these papers may be a cautionary tale. The null hypothesis, that there is no causal relationship between TBI and progressive neurodegenerative disease, appears to be very much in play, and the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.
Book Synopsis Protein Misfolding in Neurodegenerative Diseases by : Robert D. E. Sewell
Download or read book Protein Misfolding in Neurodegenerative Diseases written by Robert D. E. Sewell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2007-12-03 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current research suggests that neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, and Creutzfeldt-Jacob may be linked to disorders in protein shape referred to as protein misfolding. Continued study in this area could lead to promising advances in future treatment of these diseases. This groundbreaking text describes the latest findings regarding protein misfolding in the context of it being a marker, and perhaps a cause, in neurodegenerative diseases. Comprehensive coverage includes the diverse biochemical targets/markers for each disease, the currently limited success of drug therapies, and the cutting-edge research that could lead to more promising treatments.
Book Synopsis Cytoskeleton of the Nervous System by : Ralph A. Nixon
Download or read book Cytoskeleton of the Nervous System written by Ralph A. Nixon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-04 with total page 775 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph begins with a general description of the cytoskeleton in axonal development and pathology and then moves to more detailed descriptions of particular components, including microtubules and associated proteins, neurofilaments and interacting proteins, actin and its binding proteins, and glial fibrillary acidic protein. The later chapters focus on the functional significance of the neuronal cytoskeleton in axonal transport and its regulation in health and disease states. The Cytoskeleton of the Nervous System will encourage further development of unifying principles and stimulate new conceptual and technical approaches toward a better understanding of cytoskeleton functions in health and disease.
