Mori This volume, 'Tasek Bera, the ecology of a tropical freshwater swamp', is a monograph based on research at Tasek Bera, under the auspices of the International Biological Programme (lBP) involving Japanese and Malaysian scientists under the sponsorship of the Malaysian National Committee for the IBP (MNC-IBP) which was initiated by the Malaysian Scientific Association (MSA). This collaboration was initiated by one of us (S. Mori) in 1966 at the Scientific Committee for Freshwater Productivity (PF) of the International Biological Programme (SCIBP) of the International Council of Scientific Unions (lCSU). It involved discussions between the Japanese National Com mittee for the IBP (JIBP) and the Malaysian National Committee for the IBP (MNC-IBP) and their respe

Book Synopsis A Grammar of Semelai by : Nicole Kruspe
Download or read book A Grammar of Semelai written by Nicole Kruspe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-08 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semelai is a previously undescribed and endangered Aslian (Mon-Khmer) language of the Malay Peninsula. This book - the first in-depth description of an Aslian language - provides a comprehensive reference grammar of Semelai. Semelai intertwines two types of morphological system: a concatenative system of prefixes, suffixes and a circumfix - acquired through extended contact with Malay - and a nonconcatenative system of prefixes and infixes (including infix reduplication), inherited from Mon-Khmer. There are distinctive word classes - Nominals, Verbs and Expressives - the latter iconic utterances which simultaneously provide information about the predicate and its arguments. Semelai has many derivational processes which change word class or affect transitivity, and it combines both head-marking and dependent-marking profiles. It also has a rich phonemic system of 20 vowels and 32 consonants. Nicole Kruspe's discussion is complemented with a generous number of illustrative examples and texts, creating a reference work that will be welcomed by descriptivists and typologists alike.

Book Synopsis Applied Limnology by : Mohammadreza Gharibreza
Download or read book Applied Limnology written by Mohammadreza Gharibreza and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multidisciplinary study of Bera Lake in Malaysia is presented here, focusing on natural resources throughout the lake’s catchment area and assessing environmental impact. This applied limnology study examines issues relating to land development including soil erosion and nutrient loss in the catchment area, severe pollution of water, sediment resources in open waters and wetlands, and reduction of aquatic and bird populations. The chapters provide a comprehensive view of problems, risks and possible mitigation measures associated with this great natural habitat. The book highlights the technology and methods used to estimate both soil erosion rate and nutrient loss from the lake catchment, including an explanation of the measurement of the sedimentation rate in Bera Lake using 137Cs and 210Pb radioisotopes. The author examines the current and historic situation of contamination in sediments, presents an ecological risk assessment, and finally describes a master management plan, proposing practices to mitigate the environmental impacts of existing agricultural projects and practices to control future projects. Readers will learn of a decrease in the watershed supply of water to Bera Lake, of shoaling, degradation of water and sediment quality, and the extinction of several kinds of flora and fauna. This volume also offers an approach to sustainable land use with regard to natural resources conservation.

Book excerpt: In the past two decades there has been considerable work on global climatic change and its effect on the ecosphere, as well as on local and global environmental changes triggered by human activities. From the tropics to the Arctic, peatlands have developed under various geological conditions, and they provide good records of global and local changes since the Late Pleistocene. The objectives of the book are to analyze topics such as geological evolution of major peatlands basins; peatlands as self sustaining ecosystems; chemical environment of peatlands: water and peat chemistry; peatlands as archives of environmental changes; influence of peatlands on atmosphere: circular complex interactions; remote sensing studies of peatlands; peatlands as a resource; peatlands degradation, restoration, plus more.* Presents an interdisciplinary approach, with an emphasis on Earth Science, and addresses the need for intergration between subdisciplines and the developing of new approaches* Synthesizes the evolutionary, ecological, and chemical characteristics of major peatlands, as well as focuses on the environmental changes, from climate changes to surface ares changes due to human activities* Covers topical studies of worldwide interest and provides examples from many different countries

This book was released on with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Documenting Indigenous Knowledge in Science, Technology and Innovation contains several interesting chapters related to natural resources that are found in Malaysia and how these resources are used by indigenous and/or local people for survival. For example, the availability of marine resources such as fish as a source of protein to humans should be maintained to accommodate the increasing demand by the world’s population. Some approaches to maintain the availability of marine resources, as discussed in this book is the effective conservation strategies, sustainable aquaculture systems and the use of latest technology in the provision of capture data of marine life. The rapid increase in the world population has also changed people's views about the plants that have medicinal value towards the more aggressive use. However, efforts to record and document the medical plants is lacking in Malaysia. In addition to being a key ingredient in traditional medicine, plants such as banana can also be innovated as a renewable energy source. Although the discovery and design of this still new in Malaysia, efforts to further refine these findings should be continued to ensure the availability and sustainability of renewable energy sources. This book is suitable for use by all levels of readers, such as teachers, lecturers, researchers, scientists and the general public who need information about the topics included in this book.
