Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iraq is a nation in crisis bordering on civil war. The country now faces growing violence, a steady rise in Sunni Islamist extremism, an increasingly authoritarian leader that favors Iraq’s Sunnis, and growing ethnic tension between Arabs and Kurds. The recent Iraqi election offers little promise that it can correct the corruption, the weaknesses in its security forces, and the critical failures in governance, economic development, and leadership. The problems Iraq faces in 2014 are a legacy of mistakes made during and after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, but increasingly the nation is dealing with the self-inflicted wounds of its leaders who abuse human rights, repress opposing factions, and misuse the Iraqi police and security forces to their own end.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper summarizes the key findings and conclusions of a literature review of small-scale private service providers (SPSPs) of water supply and electricity conducted over a six-month period in 2003. It draws on more than 400 documents-including journals, articles, reports, case studies and project reports-which have been disaggregated and referenced in a publicly available database. SPSPs appear most prevalent in countries with low coverage levels, ineffective public utilities that provide inadequate or partial services, and remote, difficult-to-access regions. SPSPs are especially prevalent in post-conflict countries and others with weak or failed states. Of the countries for which evidence of SPSPs was available, at least half fall into this category. SPSP provision of networked services appears to be significantly higher for electricity than for water supply. Most SPSPs identified through the literature are single-purpose entities established for the express purpose of delivering water supply or electricity. SPSPs take a variety of organizational forms, both for-profit and non-profit. As such, they are established for a variety of reasons, including: to meet consumer demand, respond to crises, or as part of larger business ventures. The technology used may extend upstream from distribution services to the means for producing or generating water supply or electricity, so capital needs vary accordingly. The majority of SPSPs have fewer than 50 employees and usually fewer than 10. A lack of affordable financing is a constraint for most SPSPs, which fund investments mainly through their own earnings and savings, loans from friends and family, and money borrowed from formal and informal lenders."--World Bank web site.

Book excerpt: Kiosk systems with metered private connections for some households appear to be the most promising way to recover costs and meet consumers' cash flow needs (and counter their reluctance to pay in advance for a service they are not sure the government will deliver). Kiosk systems can provide cheaper, better, and more reliable water than water vendors do.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter Baily, born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, was a signalman aboard a minesweeper in WWII. After the war, he attended Temple University and Bryn Mawr College, still later received a doctorate from the School of Social Services of Catholic University of America. He studied serious family abuse and neglect, especially sexual abuse, at the Family Division of the Sociology Department, University of New Hampshire. Baily and his wife, Thelma Falk Baily, also a social worker, wrote a book on child welfare services, then conducted a three region and five state analysis of emotional abuse and neglect. Initially employed in public health, mental health, services to children and community planning, he along with his wife, joined together for seventeen years to assist public and NGO agencies in the revision of policies and services to protect children. Retiring at age seventy, Baily, who has two sons, a daughter and two grandchildren, has shifted his interests to environmental issues. He became a member of the Green Mountain Conservation Group, comprised primarily of six towns in the Ossipee Watershed in New Hampshire. Those towns, either adjacent to or near the border with Maine, provide a range of activities to protect surface waters and the major aquifer in the Watershed. The educational programs of the Green Mountain group enable Baily to volunteer later with the Parsonsfield, Maine Planning Board to do the needed research to write a regulatory water ordinance for the town. Now in his eighties, Baily lives on an old farm and finds pleasure in caring for a certified tree farm.

Book excerpt: The announcement of a hydrogen fuel initiative in the President's 2003 State of the Union speech substantially increased interest in the potential for hydrogen to play a major role in the nation's long-term energy future. Prior to that event, DOE asked the National Research Council to examine key technical issues about the hydrogen economy to assist in the development of its hydrogen R&D program. Included in the assessment were the current state of technology; future cost estimates; CO2 emissions; distribution, storage, and end use considerations; and the DOE RD&D program. The report provides an assessment of hydrogen as a fuel in the nation's future energy economy and describes a number of important challenges that must be overcome if it is to make a major energy contribution. Topics covered include the hydrogen end-use technologies, transportation, hydrogen production technologies, and transition issues for hydrogen in vehicles.

This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global water and sanitation community is currently wrestling with the policy implications of two important realizations. The first is that it is quite possible for cities to actually run out of water–for the piped network to run dry. The second is that in many locations, basic water and sanitation interventions do not result in the large public health improvements that many water and sanitation professionals had hoped. As water and sanitation professionals work out the implications of these two realizations on policy and planning for water and sanitation improvements in the Global South, they will require an in-depth knowledge of local housing, water, and sanitation conditions, as well as a nuanced understanding of how households prioritize improvements in housing, water, and sanitation. The chapters in this book about Kathmandu illustrate the types of analyses of local conditions that are needed. Kathmandu holds many lessons for the global community about households’ responses to water scarcity and the management of water and sanitation services in periods of rapid urbanization and climate change. In Focus – a book series that showcases the latest accomplishments in water research. Each book focuses on a specialist area with papers from top experts in the field. It aims to be a vehicle for in-depth understanding and inspire further conversations in the secto
