Book excerpt: Finally comes the ultimate book for all those seeking to know more about the philosophy behind The Matrix and its sequels. Suppose that this world is not what it seems, and that humanity is actually just a food source supplementing a reign of machines. Welcome to the premise behind the world of The Matrix: the movie phenomenon and massive box-office series that has also produced some of film's most intelligent and thoughtful moments in the last ten years. In the Matrix movies, "reality" is just a dreamscape, a representation that six billion points of view agree to agree is "real." So if the only reality we know is a cunning and elaborate façade, what then does that signify for us? Matrix Warrior gives us the means to understand this premise and its implications on our knowledge of self and place. Combining an in-depth examination of the film with philosophical inquiry and the teachings of Castandeda, Jake Horsley has produced in Matrix Warrior a profound yet witty analysis-and all readers need to get "unplugged." "This accessible, entertaining book will be an enjoyable companion for those who want to dig deeper into the movies' rich universe."- Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This omnibus volume combines two Alliance-Union novels: Hugo Award nominee Cuckoo’s Egg and Locus Best Novel Award nominee Serpent’s Reach. In Cuckoo’s Egg: They named him Thorn. They told him he was of their people, although he was ugly in their eyes, strange, sleek-skinned instead of furred, clawless, different. Yet he was of their power class: judge-warriors, the elite, the defenders. Thorn knew his difference was important—but not important enough to prevent murderous conspiracies against him, his protector, his caste, and perhaps against the peace of the world. But when Thorn finally learned what his true role in life was to be, that on him might hang the future of two worlds, then he had to stand alone to justify his very existence. In Serpent’s Reach: Raen a Sul Meth-maren was very young when the machinations of her distant kin erupted into a bloodbath. Years passed and Raen bided her time. Then, on a voyage to the outermost planet of the Reach, Raen encountered Betas with an intriguing tale to tell, an Azi unlike any other, and a Blue Warrior who remembered her contribution to the Hive mind. And she knew her time had come….

Book excerpt: "But war is made for the satisfaction of men's ambition; for the sake of worldly gain to the few, terrible misery is brought to numberless homes, breaking the hearts of hundreds of men and women! How many widows mourn their husbands, how many stories of savage cruelty do we hear! How many little orphaned children are crying for their dead fathers, how many women are weeping for their slain sons! There is nothing so heart-breaking and terrible as an outburst of human savagery!" (Abdul-Baha, Paris Talks, p. 29)

Book excerpt: The discovery of the century... Anthropology professor Terry Castro, leading a summer-school program in the Peruvian rain forest, stumbles upon the remnant of a nation of tall, white-skinned warriors from the time of the Incan empire. But, when a simple accident leaves Castro poisoned, a series of events are set in motion that threaten his life, and the extinction of the tribe. With the help of a young medium, Carrie Waters, Castro tries to find a remedy and discovers the poison also has the capability of tripling life expectancy. Waters confides in her uncle, Vikter Glass, a pharmaceutical company executive, in the hope that the company can manufacture an antidote. Her innocent attempt to save the man she loves triggers a race to locate the lost tribe and its fountain-of-youth elixir. Scientific advancement collides with corporate greed as competing forces converge on the tribe. The ensuing battle leaves the survivors asking: might extending human life expectancy destroy society as we know it? “I want a book that will take me someplace I've never been before. Rob Jung does that with Cloud Warriors...a fast-paced, exotic suspense novel into the heart of darkness.” Steve Thayer: New York Times bestselling author of THE WEATHERMAN

Book excerpt: On the ground, in the air, and behind the lines, grunts made life-and-death decisions every day—and endured the worst stress of their young lives. It was the tumultuous year 1968, and Robert Tonsetic was Rifle Company commander of the 4th Battalion, 12th Infantry in Vietnam. He took over a group of grunts demoralized by defeat but determined to get even. Through the legendary Tet and May Offensives, he led, trained, and risked his life with these brave men, and this is the thrilling, brutal, and honest story of his tour of duty. Tonsetic tells of leading a seriously undermanned ready-reaction force into a fierce, three-day battle with a ruthless enemy battalion; conducting surreal night airmobile assaults and treks through fetid, pitch-black jungles; and relieving combat stress by fishing with hand grenades and taking secret joyrides in Hueys. During that fateful year, as unrest erupted at home and politicians groped for a way out of the war, Tonsetic and his men did their job as soldiers and earned the title “Warriors.”

Book excerpt: Quest narratives are as old as Western culture. In stories like The Odyssey, The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and Harry Potter, men set out on journeys, fight battles and become heroes. Women traditionally feature in such stories as damsels in need of rescue or as the prizes at the end of heroic quests. These narratives perpetuate predominant gender roles by casting men as active and women as passive. Focusing on stories in which popular teenage heroines--Buffy Summers, Katniss Everdeen and Disney's Princess Merida--embark on daring journeys, this book explores what happens when traditional gender roles and narrative patterns are subverted. The author examines representations of these characters across various media--film, television, novels, posters, merchandise, fan fiction and fan art, and online memes--that model concepts of heroism and girlhood inspired by feminist ideas.

Khaim, The Blue City, is the last remaining city in a crumbled empire that overly relied upon magic until it became toxic. It is run by a tyrant known as The Jolly Mayor and his devious right hand, the last archmage in the world. Together they try to collect all the magic for themselves so they can control the citizens of the city. But when their decadence reaches new heights and begins to destroy the environment, the people stage an uprising to stop them. In four interrelated parts, The Tangled Lands is an evocative and epic story of resistance and heroic sacrifice in the twisted remains surrounding the last great city of Khaim. Paolo Bacigalupi and Tobias Buckell have created a fantasy for our times about a decadent and rotting empire facing environmental collapse from within—and yet hope emerges from unlikely places with women warriors and alchemical solutions.

Book excerpt: This book is a historical novel. It is inspired by the life of Isaiah Dorman. It has to be a historical novel because there is virtually no information about his early life as a slave on the Louisiana plantation where he was believed to have been born. Also, there is only sketchy information on his time spent with the Santee Sioux, and there is only basic information about his years working with the Army. However, all the information about the life of a slave on a cotton and rice plantation during his lifetime has been meticulously researched as has been the life of the Santee Sioux during that time period. The historical events are also factual and well researched. The book is written in three parts: The Slaves, The Sioux, and The Soldiers. The Slave portion deals with Isaiah’s life on the plantation until he ran away in his early twenties. This section explores his early years; his relationship with his parents, peers and his attitudes about being a slave. The period with the Santee Sioux explores his life with this tribe and his relationship with the warriors and other members of the tribe. It also tells how he met his wife and about their life together. His time with the Army is detailed up until the time he met his death on June 25, 1876 scouting for General Custer at the battle of the Little Bighorn. The Aftermath deals with what transpired after with the Sioux and African Americans in the years after the battle.

On such a battlefield, five formidable warriors stood against an evil greater than any the earth had ever seen. But evil is not an honorable foe. Betrayed by someone they trusted, the warriors were cursed, one by one, tossed into the maelstrom of time, imprisoned in stone, their freedom resting on nearly impossible conditions. Until . . . Damian Stephanos honed his skills in battles fought with magic as much as swords. Caught by a deadly spell that left him trapped for centuries in darkness and obscurity, he is finally freed, only to discover that his enemy still lives. Determined to find him--and to free his brothers in arms--he first must fulfill his blood debt to the woman who released him from his torment. Unfortunately, being so close to this enticing female is another type of torment altogether . . . Cassandra "Casey" Lewis is a hunter. Possessing the rare ability to sense magic, she spends most of her time shadowing arcane collectors, and more often than not, stealing the dangerous artifacts she pursues. Her job is risky, especially when she's stealing from one of the most powerful sorcerers alive. But having a gorgeous warrior by her side is a definite bonus. He's great in a fight . . . and in other places, too. Following a trail of dead bodies, the two of them must join forces to track down the sorcerer who cursed Damian, and who now plans to turn an ordinary magical device into a deadly weapon. Risking everything, including their hearts, they're about to discover that trusting each other might be the hardest thing of all. True warriors seek to learn what serves them and what does not, what is selfish and what is selfless, and how to decide in favor of light over dark. Like everyone else, the warrior owns the consequences, good or bad. In a how-to manual, modern-day warrior Rich Hungerford offers guidance and support to a new era of warriors desiring to positively impact the world while navigating the challenges of life. Intertwined with his often deeply-personal insights gathered from his own life journey is philosophical guidance on how to successfully walk the warriors’ path. Within the three stages of the journey, Hungerford candidly describes both the difficulties and rewards that accompany a warrior’s commitment to personal growth, provides an awareness of the importance of developing the mind, body, and spirit along the way, and encourages the acceptance of and surrender to a personal destiny with grace. The Warrior and the Wolf shares wisdom, insights, and advice for warriors seeking guidance on how to walk a spiritual path to develop the higher self, live true, and truly live.
