Book excerpt: Named one of the best nonfiction books of the year by The Washington Post “Tangled Up in Blue is a wonderfully insightful book that provides a lens to critically analyze urban policing and a road map for how our most dispossessed citizens may better relate to those sworn to protect and serve.” —The Washington Post “Remarkable . . . Brooks has produced an engaging page-turner that also outlines many broadly applicable lessons and sensible policy reforms.” —Foreign Affairs Journalist and law professor Rosa Brooks goes beyond the "blue wall of silence" in this radical inside examination of American policing In her forties, with two children, a spouse, a dog, a mortgage, and a full-time job as a tenured law professor at Georgetown University, Rosa Brooks decided to become a cop. A liberal academic and journalist with an enduring interest in law's troubled relationship with violence, Brooks wanted the kind of insider experience that would help her understand how police officers make sense of their world—and whether that world can be changed. In 2015, against the advice of everyone she knew, she applied to become a sworn, armed reserve police officer with the Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Department. Then as now, police violence was constantly in the news. The Black Lives Matter movement was gaining momentum, protests wracked America's cities, and each day brought more stories of cruel, corrupt cops, police violence, and the racial disparities that mar our criminal justice system. Lines were being drawn, and people were taking sides. But as Brooks made her way through the police academy and began work as a patrol officer in the poorest, most crime-ridden neighborhoods of the nation's capital, she found a reality far more complex than the headlines suggested. In Tangled Up in Blue, Brooks recounts her experiences inside the usually closed world of policing. From street shootings and domestic violence calls to the behind-the-scenes police work during Donald Trump's 2016 presidential inauguration, Brooks presents a revelatory account of what it's like inside the "blue wall of silence." She issues an urgent call for new laws and institutions, and argues that in a nation increasingly divided by race, class, ethnicity, geography, and ideology, a truly transformative approach to policing requires us to move beyond sound bites, slogans, and stereotypes. An explosive and groundbreaking investigation, Tangled Up in Blue complicates matters rather than simplifies them, and gives pause both to those who think police can do no wrong—and those who think they can do no right.

A worldly and cynical heroine is softened by the same story. Tom is born of wealthy parents in England in the 1960s. He hates his violent father and loves his mother. His father owns a Munch. His parents are killed in a plane crash. Sir Peter controls his fortune until he is twenty-one. He wants to buy the Munch. He’s obsessed by it. Tom refuses. Tom becomes a recluse on a beach near Darwin. He meets Annie and falls in love. She has had a hysterectomy and cannot have children. She says the Munch is damaging him and convinces him to sell it. An expert declares it genuine. Tom will not sell it to Sir Peter. He hates him. They find another buyer. After the sale, the Munch is found to be a fake. There has been a switch and only Tom could have done it. Before he is arrested, Tom is shown photos of Annie with Sir Peter, she is his mistress and he is the real buyer. Tom now hates Annie. Annie now loves Tom. They all come to Darwin for the trial. Annie visits the expert. He commits suicide. He has left a letter and the truth comes out. Annie is found mutilated. Tom saves her life. He still hates her. He meets Ambrosia. She becomes pregnant with twins. There is a wedding. After the birth, he goes home to his wife. It’s Annie. She is the mother. They were her eggs. Ambrosia was their surrogate. He vows vengeance on Sir Peter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tohi Vagahau Niue is a significant new dictionary detailing the Polynesian language of Niue, and will benefit Niuean studies for years to come. While its main aim is to be a repository for native speakers, it will also serve a wider linguistic audience, including comparativists and theorists in lexicography. Detailed user notes introduce the reader to the basic challenges in Niuean lexicography and grammar. With some 10,000 Niuean word entries, the present dictionary is a significant expansion on an earlier work. The Niuean contributors took great care to present their language as a living entity while preserving its valuable past, but they are also aware of its uncertain future. Language revival is essential to preserve a linguistic Pacific jewel, and as such the new dictionary will lend status to Niuean language studies as well as be an invaluable help in using Niuean confidently in everyday life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anna Sale and her podcast guests "have direct and thought-provoking conversations, discussing topics that most of us are too squeamish, polite, or nervous to bring up. But Sale argues that we all experience these hard things, and by not talking to one another, we cut ourselves off, leading us to feel isolated and disconnected from the people who can help us most. In [this book], Sale uses the best of what she's learned from her podcast to reveal that when we have the courage to talk about hard things, we learn about ourselves, others, and the world that we make together. Diving into five of the most fraught conversation topics, ... she moves between memoir, ... snapshots of a variety of Americans opening up about their lives, and expert opinions to show why having tough conversations is important and how to do them in a thoughtful and generous way"--Publisher marketing.
