Book Synopsis Ocean of Love, or Sea of Troubles? by : Geoffrey Harris
Download or read book Ocean of Love, or Sea of Troubles? written by Geoffrey Harris and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of Dr. Harris' book suggests that life is like a two-sided coin: it can be an Ocean of Love but can also be a Sea of Troubles. The subtitle clarifies this paradox: first, there are many signs of God's reality and activity in the world, and the first section of the book examines ways in which people are aware of God as both a creative and immanent presence in life. The "signs" of God are not philosophical "proofs" but empirical realities accessible to all people. In the second section, the biblical responses to suffering in the world are explored--through both Old and New Testaments. In the third section the writings of two modern apologists, C. S. Lewis and Philip Yancey, are assessed, and then finally there is a chapter of interviews with people who have known suffering in their lives.
Download or read book Tally's Corner written by Elliot Liebow and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2003 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of Tally's Corner, a sociological classic selling more than one million copies, was the first compelling response to the culture of poverty thesis--that the poor are different and, according to conservatives, morally inferior--and alternative explanations that many African Americans are caught in a tangle of pathology owing to the absence of black men in families. The debate has raged up to the present day. Yet Liebow's shadow theory of values--especially the values of poor, urban, black men--remains the single most parsimonious account of the reasons why the behavior of the poor appears to be at odds with the values of the American mainstream. While Elliot Liebow's vivid narrative of "street-corner" black men remains unchanged, the new introductions to this long-awaited revised edition bring the book up to date. Wilson and Lemert describe the debates since 1965 and situate Liebow's classic text in respect to current theories of urban poverty and race. They account for what Liebow might have seen had he studied the street corner today after welfare has been virtually ended and the drug economy had taken its toll. They also take stock of how the new global economy is a source of added strain on the urban poor. Discussion of field methods since the 1960s rounds out the book's new coverage.
Book Synopsis Take Arms Against a Sea of Troubles by : Harold Bloom
Download or read book Take Arms Against a Sea of Troubles written by Harold Bloom and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The great poems, plays, novels, stories teach us how to go on living. . . . Your own mistakes, accidents, failures at otherness beat you down. Rise up at dawn and read something that matters as soon as you can.” So Harold Bloom, the most famous literary critic of his generation, exhorts readers of his last book: one that praises the sustaining power of poetry. "Passionate. . . . Perhaps Bloom’s most personal work, this is a fitting last testament to one of America’s leading twentieth-century literary minds."—Publishers Weekly “An extraordinary testimony to a long life spent in the company of poetry and an affecting last declaration of [Bloom's] passionate and deeply unfashionable faith in the capacity of the imagination to make the world feel habitable”—Seamus Perry, Literary Review "Reading, this stirring collection testifies, ‘helps in staying alive.’“—Kirkus Reviews, starred review This dazzling celebration of the power of poetry to sublimate death—completed weeks before Harold Bloom died—shows how literature renews life amid what Milton called “a universe of death.” Bloom reads as a way of taking arms against the sea of life’s troubles, taking readers on a grand tour of the poetic voices that have haunted him through a lifetime of reading. “High literature,” he writes, “is a saving lie against time, loss of individuality, premature death.” In passages of breathtaking intimacy, we see him awake late at night, reciting lines from Dante, Shakespeare, Milton, Montaigne, Blake, Wordsworth, Hart Crane, Jay Wright, and many others. He feels himself “edged by nothingness,” uncomprehending, but still sustained by reading. Generous and clear‑eyed, this is among Harold Bloom’s most ambitious and most moving books.

Download or read book Tally Ho! written by R W Foster and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2009-03-23 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir of the life and World War II service of Battle of Britain veteran, RAF fighter pilot Bob Foster. Bob Foster's flying years began shortly before WWII, when he learned to fly with the RAFVR. Called up for war service in September 1939, he completed his training and was posted to 605 Squadron, equipped with Hawker Hurricanes. By early September 1940 he and his Squadron were in the thick of the air fighting over southern England, operating from Croydon. Surviving the Battle, he later became an instructor, but shortly after joining 54 Squadron, which had Spitfires, he and his unit were sent to Australia to defend the Darwin area from Japanese incursions. Awarded the DFC for his efforts, he returned to the UK and was given an assignment with a RAF public relations outfit, ending up in Normandy within three weeks of the invasion of 1944. Often serving right up in the front lines, Bob saw the war at very close hand, and then quite by chance became one of the first, if not the first, RAF officer to enter Paris with the liberating French army, and again, by chance, was in General de Gaulle's triumphant procession down the Champs-Élysées. His memoir is an entertaining collection of stories and reminiscences of two distinct areas of WWII, which also shows how luck often shaped the lives of the fighter pilots involved. Bob Foster later became a successful sales manager with Shell-Mex and BP, as well as serving with the Royal Auxiliary Air Force. He now lives with his wife Kaethe near Bexhill in East Sussex.
Book Synopsis TALLY HO! - Yankee in a Spitfire [Illustrated Edition] by : Pilot Officer Arthur Donahue
Download or read book TALLY HO! - Yankee in a Spitfire [Illustrated Edition] written by Pilot Officer Arthur Donahue and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes 8 Illustrations of the author, his unit and the aircraft they flew. The Immortal speech of Winston Churchill to Parliament in 1940 as the Battle of Britain raged above the skies of England is well-known: "The gratitude of every home in our island, in our Empire and indeed throughout the world, except in the abodes of the guilty, goes out to the British airmen, who, undaunted by odds, unwearied in their constant challenge and mortal danger, are turning the tide of the world war by their prowess and devotion. Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few” However not all of the pilots that flew in the Battle of Britain were actually British; many came from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa or nations overrun by the Nazis; Poles, Czechs. So direly needed was every pilot that a blind eye was turned on the nationality of the applicant for Fighter Command; one such man was Arthur ‘Art’ Donahue, an American hailing from the corn fields of Minnesota. Donahue was a humble and unprepossessing man, but despite his self-effacing nature his bravery in joining “The Few” during their time of greatest need is a testament to his keen sense of justice. Having been a pilot for some years before joining he was almost immediately thrown into the frontline fighting and in short order downed a BF 109, the “ratlike” Messerschmitt that hunted the skies. His luck did not hold for long in the frenzied fighting in the skies as he was shot down and badly burnt facially. Amazingly he decided after a brief recuperation to get “back in the saddle” and was flying again with 64 Squadron in the melee in the air. His recounts his experiences with wit, humility and frank honesty; a valuable historical memoir of one of the famous airmen that saved Britain, it is all the more poignant as two years later he was shot down over the English Channel and his body was never recovered. An exciting, vivid memoir of the greatest air conflict of history.
