Some had their beginnings here, growing in the telling until they were as big as Norfolk's skies. Others were brought here by travellers from far away — even Viking raiders long ago. Stories that in time would change to suit our Norfolk ways, for as everyone knows — we do different! This is a collection of tales reworked and rewritten by Dave Tonge so that children might learn something of this most special county: its places and people, its strange and wondrous dialect. In this collection of stories, each introduced with snippets of local history, we journey to a place where fact, fiction, truth and lies become as one.

Book excerpt: Winner of the East Anglian Book of the Year 2015 John Craske, a Norfok fisherman, was born in 1881 and in 1917, when he had just turned thirty-six, he fell seriously ill. For the rest of his life he kept moving in and out of what was described as 'a stuporous state'. In 1923 he started making paintings of the sea and boats and the coastline seen from the sea, and later, when he was too ill to stand and paint, he turned to embroidery, which he could do lying in bed. His embroideries were also the sea, including his masterpiece, a huge embroidery of The Evacuation of Dunkirk. Very few facts about Craske are known, and only a few scattered photographs have survived, together with accounts by the writer Sylvia Townsend Warner and her lover Valentine Ackland, who discovered Craske in 1937. So - as with all her books - Julia Blackburn's account of his life is far from a conventional biography. Instead it is a quest which takes her in many strange directions - to fishermen's cottages in Sheringham, a grand hotel fallen on hard times in Great Yarmouth and to the isolated Watch House far out in the Blakeney estuary; to Cromer and the bizarre story of Einstein's stay there, guarded by dashing young women in jodhpurs with shotguns. Threads is a book about life and death and the strange country between the two where John Craske seemed to live. It is also about life after death, as Julia's beloved husband Herman, a vivid presence in the early pages of the book, dies before it is finished. In a gentle meditation on art and fame; on the nature of time and the fact of mortality; and illustrated with Craske's paintings and embroideries, Threads shows, yet again, that Julia Blackburn can conjure a magic that is spellbinding and utterly her own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pictured is the legendary Myers Field c. 1950, where Norfolk ballplayers, visiting major league stars, and Piedmont League opponents once dueled upon its dirt and grass. The story of baseball in Norfolk, Virginia is as fascinating and enduring as the game itself. Christy Mathewson, Phil Rizzuto, Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra, and a myriad of other charismatic players from the game spent time developing their raw and untested skills on the diamonds of Norfolk. Military stars of the powerful World War II Navy teams and legends of the Negro Leagues performed to the delight and fascination of local fans. Over the years, the mighty New York Yankees with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Joe DiMaggio showcased their mythical talents during scheduled exhibitions, as did dozens of other big league teams and their stars. The images depicted within this pictorial feature only a fragment of the vast chronology of the game of baseball as it was played in Norfolk over the years. They allow the reader to revisit the past, examine the present, and ponder the future of baseball in the city of Norfolk. All photographs were painstakingly selected by the authors for their dynamic visual appeal and historical impact to accurately reflect the story of baseball in Norfolk.

Book excerpt: Four years after it happened, police have finally arrested a man over the baffling murder of Janelle Patton on Norfolk Island. The murder may or may not yet be solved, but Norfolk Island still has plenty of secrets. I always thought the biggest coup for Norfolk Island would be to get on the big blue weather map, to be broadcast to millions of viewers who would say 'So that's where Norfolk Island is.' Instead Norfolk Island got on a different map and it had nothing to do with sunshine or rain. On the afternoon of Easter Sunday 2002, somebody killed a woman. A vicious, nasty prolonged attack which pitted a feisty, pretty brunette against a person of great strength, anger and hatred. Her name was Janelle Patton. She fought for her life. And died. In the tradition of true-crime reportage Norfolk scratches the facade of this secretive and protective community, probing murder, myth, history, politics and gossip. Despite being an Australian territory Norfolk is wonderfully and strangely different - a culture where deception, tension and age-old animosities lie just beneath the surface of life in 'paradise'.
