Book excerpt: The Wind in the Willows has its origins in the bedtime stories that Kenneth Grahame told to his son Alastair and then continued in letters (now held in the Bodleian Library) while he was on holiday. But the book developed into something much more sophisticated than this, as Peter Hunt shows. He identifies the colleagues and friends on whom Grahame is thought to have based the characters of Mole, Rat, Badger and Toad, and explores the literary genres of boating, caravanning and motoring books on which the author drew. He also recounts the extraordinary correspondence surrounding the book's first publication and the influence of two determined women - Elspeth Grahame and publisher's agent Constance Smedley - who helped turn the book into the classic for children we know and love today, when it was almost entirely intended for adults.Generously illustrated with original drawings, fan letters (including one from President Roosevelt) and archival material, this book explores the mysteries surrounding one of the most successful works of children's literature ever published.

Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows is an enduring classic of children’s literature, and has been beloved by readers of all ages since its publication in 1908. In addition to the delightful tale about the adventures of Mole, Ratty, Badger, and Toad—illustrated in full color by Arthur Rackham—this volume includes more than two dozen short stories from Grahame’s collections The Golden Age (1895) and Dream Days (1898), the latter of which contains Grahame’s most famous short story, “The Reluctant Dragon.” With an emphasis on childhood perspectives and often devoid of adult sentimentalities, Grahame’s stories focus on the concerns of youth—a focus that makes these stories endure in the hearts and minds of today's readers.

Book excerpt: Immerse yourself in the charming and whimsical world of "The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Grahame. This beloved classic follows the adventures of four endearing animal friends-Mole, Ratty, Toad, and Badger-along the tranquil rivers and lush countryside of Edwardian England. The story begins with Mole, who, tired of his solitary life, ventures out of his underground home and discovers the delights of the riverbank. There, he meets Ratty, a water-loving rodent who introduces him to a life of boating, picnics, and leisurely days. The two friends soon encounter the wealthy and impulsive Toad, whose obsession with motorcars leads to a series of reckless escapades and comedic mishaps. As Toad's antics land him in trouble, the wise and reclusive Badger steps in to offer guidance and support. Together, these four friends navigate the joys and challenges of life, from Toad's daring escape from prison and the subsequent battle to reclaim Toad Hall from a band of marauding weasels, to the quieter moments of camaraderie and reflection by the riverbank. Each character brings their own unique personality and perspective, creating a rich tapestry of friendship, loyalty, and the simple pleasures of rural life. Kenneth Grahame's lyrical prose and vivid descriptions bring the English countryside to life, capturing the magic and beauty of nature in every season. "The Wind in the Willows" is not just a tale of adventure; it is a celebration of home, friendship, and the enduring spirit of the animal characters who inhabit this enchanting world. Perfect for readers of all ages, "The Wind in the Willows" continues to enchant with its timeless themes, memorable characters, and the gentle reminder of the importance of kindness, courage, and the bonds that connect us all. Book excerpt: The Wind in the Willows Tales from the Riverbank Kenneth Grahame Illustrated by Paul Bransom The Wind in the Willows is a children's novel by Kenneth Grahame, first published in 1908. Alternately slow moving and fast paced, it focuses on four anthropomorphised animals in a pastoral version of England. The novel is notable for its mixture of mysticism, adventure, morality, and camaraderie and celebrated for its evocation of the nature of the Thames valley. In 1908, Grahame retired from his position as secretary of the Bank of England. He moved back to Cookham, Berkshire, where he had been brought up and spent his time by the River Thames doing much as the animal characters in his book do--namely, as one of the phrases from the book says, "simply messing about in boats"--and wrote down the bed-time stories he had been telling his son Alistair. In 1909, Theodore Roosevelt, then President of the United States, wrote to Grahame to tell him that he had "read it and reread it, and have come to accept the characters as old friends". The novel was in its thirty-first printing when playwright A. A. Milne adapted a part of it for the stage as Toad of Toad Hall in 1929. In 2003, The Wind in the Willows was listed at number 16 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.

Book excerpt: Tales featuring anthropomorphic animals have been around as long as there have been storytellers to spin them, from Aesop's Fables to Reynard the Fox to Alice in Wonderland. The genre really took off following the explosion of furry fandom in the 21st century, with talking animals featuring in everything from science fiction to fantasy to LGBTQ coming-out stories. In his lifetime, Fred Patten (1940-2018)--one of the founders of furry fandom and a scholar of anthropomorphic animal literature--authored hundreds of book reviews that comprise a comprehensive critical survey of the genre. This selected compilation provides an overview from 1784 through the 2010s, covering such popular novels as Watership Down and Redwall, along with forgotten gems like The Stray Lamb and Where the Blue Begins, and science fiction works like Sundiver and Decision at Doona.
