Book excerpt: In his bestselling book, THE SEAT OF THE SOUL, Gary Zukav's driving concept was 'multi-sensory perception', an innate sense that allows people to experience the world beyond the five senses, to listen harder to who they are and ultimately to save one's life. Now in SOUL STORIES, Gary Zukav brings this concept and many others vividly alive, with marvellous true stories of how they manifest themselves in individual lives. This book is enormously practical in the way the author builds on each specific story to a discussion of its application to the reader's needs, leading to a deeper understanding of authentic power and inner peace. And best of all, it is wonderfully readable and even more accessible than THE SEAT OF THE SOUL.

Book excerpt: I had been getting messages from psychics for some time that I should do some writing. That prompted me to create a small website page with spiritual insights in 2012. More recently, I started getting e-mail prompts and deadline notices about an online book writing class offered by psychic medium James Van Praagh whose books and television show I was familiar with. After ignoring about six e-mail prompts, I was in Traverse City, Michigan, on vacation, when I thought it would be fun to get a psychic reading there. The psychic told me, among other things, that my guides on the "other side" wanted me to do some more writing. I took this as a signal that I should join the online class, which had a deadline to join two days after my reading. So I sent in the money, and after much soul-searching, Soul Licensed: Tips and Tales resulted two years later (long after the class ended). It had occurred to me that there are many people I know who seemed to lack any hope for something after this lifetime. Everyone was out to complete physical goals or have fun without any true belief about there being an afterlife. I had learned from my experiences that there was a very good reason to enjoy our lives here...and look forward to much more than what was visible on this planet. So I thought I would write this book sharing some of my interactions with spirits, energy, and psychics and offer my wisdom on how to create a healthier, more peaceful existence. You, the reader, can then take that information, in addition to the many clues (including license plate messages) that we get daily from the "other side" and discover your own reality. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have enjoyed this process and living this life with daily reminders that we are never alone in this sphere. Have a wonderful journey!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories carry the seeds of our humanness. They help us, teach us, heal us, and connect us to what matters. As Far As the Heart Can See is an invitation to be in relationship with deep and life-giving material. Many spiritual gurus present dense metaphysical theses with an intellectual approach for "working" a spiritual path; poet and philosopher Mark Nepo reaches people through their hearts, bringing something fresh and new to the field by stimulating change through reflection of thoughts and feelings. The stories he shares in As Far As the Heart Can See come from many places—from Nepo's personal history to dreams to the myths of our ancestors. Each one is an invitation to awaken an aspect of living in relationship with the sacred. Following each of the forty-five stories are three forms of an invitation to further the conversation: journal questions, table questions, and meditations. The questions, whether reflected upon in a journal or discussed in deeper conversation with friends or family, are meant to lead the seeker down unimagined paths and back into life; the meditations are meant to ground the learning. These stories and parables about universal concepts and themes offer a poet's sensuality and a philosopher's sensibility to personalizing the journey of the human experience in the world.

Book excerpt: The story of America and African Americans is a story of hope and inspiration and unwavering courage. In Heart and Soul, Kadir Nelson's stirring paintings and words grace 100-plus pages of a gorgeous picture book—a beautiful gift for readers of all ages, a treasure to share across generations at home or in the classroom. Heart and Soul is about the men, women, and children who toiled in the hot sun picking cotton; it's about the America ripped in two by Jim Crow laws; it's about the brothers and sisters of all colors who rallied against those who would dare bar a child from an education. It's a story of discrimination and broken promises, determination, and triumphs. Kadir Nelson's Heart and Soul—the winner of numerous awards, including the Coretta Scott King Author Award and Illustrator Honor, and the recipient of five starred reviews—is told through the unique point of view and intimate voice of a one-hundred-year-old African-American female narrator. This inspiring book demonstrates that in striving for freedom and equal rights, African Americans help our country on the journey toward its promise of liberty and justice—the true heart and soul of our nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death is not an ending, but a transition of the soul. Here are true-life stories of ordinary men, women, and children who no longer fear death or grieve for deceased loved ones. Why? Because they know the human spirit survives death--and lives on. But how do they know this with such certainty? The proof lies in what they have seen with their own eyes and felt with their own hearts. Each was present when a grandmother, best friend, spouse, or child appeared to them in a luminous visitation to ease their grief and to show them that no one had really died. They were graced to witness angels, or Jesus, or other spiritual beings who came to announce the well-being of their recently passed dear ones. Here, told in simple but emotionally rich words, are seventy-eight unforgettable tales of grief allayed and solace attained. Housewives, mechanics and mothers, sons and daughters, truck drivers and nurses, young and old--all attest to the survival of the spirit after death. What is remarkable is that many of them had no previous mystical experiences or even beliefs that such occurrences were possible. Read their miraculous stories and you'll begin to understand why Nick Bunick, subject of The Messengers, assures us that with every transition of the soul, grief dissolves and it is only death that dies.

Book excerpt: The grand religious stories that gave meaning to life and death in the past have crumbled under sceptical scrutiny. The dominant mainstream philosophy is now scientific objectivism, which describes a universe that exists for no reason and a life that ends in oblivion. In this book pioneering philosopher Tim Freke addresses the 'soul crisis' in modern culture that has arisen from lack of meaning. He offers an intelligent 'spiritual' perspective on life and death to help us make sense of a paradoxical world, which is sometimes bleak and banal, but also can be magical and full of significance. He presents a revolutionary paradigm shift in our understanding of reality that integrates the deepest insights of science and spirituality to create a new model of human identity, which makes the idea of the immortal soul intellectually credible. He explores the process of evolution, not as blind chance, but as the momentous story of the self-realising universe. The development of the material world has led to the emergence of 'psyche' or 'soul', which you are experiencing right now as a stream of thoughts and images that don?t exist in space and aren't made of matter. We are not insignificant specks in a vast purposeless cosmos. We are significant participants in the magnificent and meaningful story of soul. The universe is coming to know itself through each one of us and this process doesn't end at death, because the evolution of soul has also been the evolution of immorality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A man of African and Native American ancestry would seem an unlikely candidate for conversion to Judaism ? especially for becoming an observant Orthodox Jew. And Abel Gomes wouldn't ever have struck anyone as a radical or unpredictable person. On the contrary, he has always been thoughtful, calm, intelligent and focused, not someone given to rash decisions or susceptible to mystical compulsions. Abel's determination to become a Jew emerged slowly, nurtured by a relentless logic that led him to regard his Catholic upbringing with intellectual discomfort ? and by his marriage to a Jewish woman, although one not at all interested, at least at the time, in exploring her own religious heritage. Ariella, who had been raised by secular parents, was entirely comfortable with being Jewish only in a cultural sense, and, as her marriage to a non-Jew testified, felt unconstrained by religious rules. In fact, her husband's growing interest in her ancestral heritage only irked her at first. If Abe's ethnic roots were an unlikely impetus for him to explore Judaism, Ariella's self-identity as a ?cultural? Jew added to the unlikelihood that the couple would one day become committed Orthodox Jews. But the unlikely sometimes comes to pass, and the story of the young couple's journey to Orthodox Judaism is recounted in Migrant Soul: The Story of an American Convert. Abel's interest in Judaism led Ariella to first humor him and eventually join him on his quest to go from affiliation with an Indian tribe to membership in the Jewish one. The couple's journey led them to Reform and Conservative Jewish communities, and finally, to the Orthodox one. Abel and Ariella quickly came to realize that Reform Jewish theology has redefined Judaism to the point where it has more in common with American political and social liberalism than with the foundational tenets and practices of Jews through the centuries. That was not what they were searching for. And so, with Orthodoxy as far from their minds as Buddhism, the two seekers gravitated to the Conservative movement, which claimed fealty to the Jewish past even as it embraced the vibrant cultural and intellectual present. With time, though, they became disappointed by that segment, too, of the contemporary Jewish world. It seemed to offer more lip service than true dedication to Jewish ideas and practices, and differed from the Reform community more in quantity of Jewish practices than in quality of fealty to traditional Judaism. Moreover, despite Abel's Conservative conversion and the welcome he received from Conservative Jews, he found that his unusual background did not insulate him from being regarded by Conservative Jews, despite their progressive stances in other realms, as an outsider. Even as they became active members of a Conservative congregation, Abel and Ariella began to interact with members of the Orthodox community in the city where they lived. And those interactions, recounted in Migrant Soul, empowered by the couple's increasing realization that conversion to Judaism was more than a ceremony ? that becoming a Jew meant becoming a Jew, an actual part of the Jewish people ? led to Abel's decision to undergo a conversion that met the strict standards of halacha, or Jewish religious law. Neither the process leading to that point, nor the conversion rite, nor its aftermath were easy. But Abel and Ariella were determined, and succeeded in becoming not only fully observant of Jewish religious law, and not only active and essential parts of an Orthodox community, but inspirations for countless Jews ? both those who know them personally and those who became acquainted with them ?at a distance, ? through the pages of Migrant Soul.

Book excerpt: The diaries of a remarkable young woman who was determined to live a meaningful and happy life despite her struggle with cystic fibrosis and a rare superbug—from age fifteen to her death at the age of twenty-five—the inspiration for the original streaming documentary Salt in My Soul “An exquisitely nuanced chronicle of a terrified but hopeful young woman whose life was beginning and ending, all at once.”—Los Angeles Times Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of three, Mallory Smith grew up to be a determined, talented young woman who inspired others even as she privately raged against her illness. Despite the daily challenges of endless medical treatments and a deep understanding that she’d never lead a normal life, Mallory was determined to “Live Happy,” a mantra she followed until her death. Mallory worked hard to make the most out of the limited time she had, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University, becoming a cystic fibrosis advocate well known in the CF community, and embarking on a career as a professional writer. Along the way, she cultivated countless intimate friendships and ultimately found love. For more than ten years, Mallory recorded her thoughts and observations about struggles and feelings too personal to share during her life, leaving instructions for her mother to publish her work posthumously. She hoped that her writing would offer insight to those living with, or loving someone with, chronic illness. What emerges is a powerful and inspiring portrait of a brave young woman and blossoming writer who did not allow herself to be defined by disease. Her words offer comfort and hope to readers, even as she herself was facing death. Salt in My Soul is a beautifully crafted, intimate, and poignant tribute to a short life well lived—and a call for all of us to embrace our own lives as fully as possible.

Book excerpt: I'm Tyler Lindsey, and until recently, I had an okay apartment, an okay girlfriend, and an okay job as a bellboy at a respectable Boston hotel. Then rock star Chris Raiden died right before I brought his room service -- stiffing me on the tip, by the way -- and my life went to hell. My fifteen minutes of fame was more like five seconds, and my girlfriend left me in disgust. But even worse -- Chris is haunting me. Not the room where he died, like a normal ghost. No, somehow he's stuck to me and is insisting on taking care of a bunch of unfinished business in California. So now I have to traipse across the country with the world's most narcissistic ghost. But . . . I keep having these weird thoughts. Thoughts about how much I like the way he makes me laugh. Thoughts where I kind of want to kiss the emo-narcissist, even though he's a ghost and an asshole and I can't touch him anyway. And even if I could, what will happen when he finishes his business and nothing's keeping him here anymore?
