Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales From the Indian Epics The favourable reception given by the Indian public to the "Indian Heroes" has led me to write a companion book. In the Indian Heroes I confined myself to the actual doings of the heroes themselves. In the "Tales from the Indian Epics" I have told a series of stories which are incidentally related in the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Eight of the following stories will be found either in the Adi Parva or the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. "The Descent of the Ganges" will be found in the Ramayana Balam Kandam. To these I have added the tenth story, "The Tale of the Pole Star," from the Shrimadbhagvat. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Indian Epics: The Stories of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata Where, for any reason, I have especially desired that an event recorded, or an Opinion expressed, in the epics should be reproduced without the possibility of misrepresentation on my part, I have thought it best to quote verbatim the translations of them made by Hindu scholars; although, unfortunately, their versions are by no means elegant, and, indeed, often quite the reverse. But as they, no doubt, reflect the structure and texture of the poems in a way that no more free or polished English rendering could possibly do, I fancy the citations I have made will not be un welcome to most readers. My book is divided into two distinct parts dealing separately with the Ramayana and the Maha bharata, and at the end of each part I have given, in the form of an Appendix, one or two of the more striking legendary episodes lavishly scattered through these famous epics, and which, though not essential for the comprehension of the main story, are too beautiful or important to be omitted. Of these episodes I should say that they are the best-known portions of the Ramayana and Mahabharata, having been told and retold in all the leading Indian vernaculars, and having, most of them, been brought before the European world in both prose and verse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cradle Tales of Hinduism IN the following stories, it may be worth while to point out, we have a collection of genuine Indian nursery-tales. The only discretion which I have permitted to myself has been that some times, in choosing between two versions, I have preferred the story received by word of mouth to that found in the books. Each one, and every incident of each, as here told, has one or other of these forms of authenticity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The magical story of how Ganesh, the son of Shiva and Parvati, was brought back to life with the head of an elephant • The story of one of the most beloved characters in Indian lore, made accessible for Western children • Illustrated throughout with paintings from the classic Indian tradition Any Indian child can tell you how the beloved god Ganesh got his elephant’s head--now American children can know as well. For centuries Indian children have grown up hearing Ganesh’s story--how his mother, Parvati (an incarnation of the great mother goddess), created a small boy from sandalwood soap and commanded that he guard the palace against all intruders while she took her bath. How her husband, Shiva (the fearsome god of destruction), didn’t take kindly to being barred from his own home. How Shiva beheaded the boy during the cosmic war that followed, but then, when he realized that the balance of the entire universe was at stake, brought the boy back to life by grafting an elephant’s head onto his body and made him the people’s intercessor against the powers of destruction. Ganesh’s timeless story teaches children about the steadfast power of dedication to duty, the awe-inspiring power of a mother’s love for her child, and the gentle power of compassion, which holds the world together. Accompanied by rich, color illustrations prepared according to the traditional Hindu canon, How Ganesh Got His Elephant Head will transport children to a magical world filled with ancient wisdom.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Epic Poetry: Being the Substance of Lectures Recently Given at Oxford; With a Full Analysis of the Ràmàyana and of the Leading Story of the Mahà-Bhàrata I trust, then, that the present volume may do some thing towards supplying a manifest want. Its Object is to exhibit, in a popular manner, the general features of Indian Epic Poetry, to indicate the points of contact and divergence between that poetry and the Greek epos, and to furnish the Sanskrit scholar with a full analysis of the Ramayana and Of the leading story of the Mahabharata. In justice to myself I should state that the size of the book does not represent the amount of labour employed on its composition. To produce a few insignificant pages, I have had to work my way through volumes of Sanskrit; but I shall not regret the time I have devoted to the task, if any useful purpose be thereby served. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following in the footsteps of the storytellers of his native India, R. K. Narayan has produced his own versions of tales taken from the Ramayana and the Mahabarata. Carefully selecting those stories which include the strongest characters, and omitting the theological or social commentary that would have drawn out the telling, Narayan informs these fascinating myths with his urbane humor and graceful style. "Mr. Narayan gives vitality and an original viewpoint to the most ancient of legends, lacing them with his own blend of satire, pertinent explanation and thoughtful commentary."—Santha Rama Rau, New York Times "Narayan's narrative style is swift, firm, graceful, and lucid . . . thoroughly knowledgeable, skillful, entertaining. One could hardly hope for more."—Rosanne Klass, Times Literary Supplement
