Book excerpt: For many Americans, hearing the words, "United States of America" brings stirring emotions. It is the concept of e pluribus unum-"out of many, one"-that summarizes the sense of national unity that Americans feel, and one that author Martin Street seeks to convey in Taking the Pulse of America. This compendium of 110 essays offers a snapshot of American life today. Street offers opinions and suggestions for many of the most contentious issues of our time. From hot button issues like abortion, illegal immigration, and waterboarding to the justice system, education reform, and government affairs, Street doesn't mince words. Often, Street's commentary is just as contentious as his subjects. Even so, he provides an honest, authentic voice to these conversations that have become part of our national lexicon. Whether he discusses unions, our throwaway society, or professional athletes, Street gives his straightforward, often politically incorrect opinions. A call to action for Americans to restore the United States of America to her former glory, Taking the Pulse of America is essential reading for every citizen.

It then introduce you to a church-health diagnostic tool you can apply to your setting. Thousands of pastors and leaders around the world have found this paradigm helpful in organizing the ministry and mission of the local church. This book and the free diagnostic tool it presents are most useful if accompanied by a healthy process of conversations. With such a process, led by the Spirit, this book can help you discern a preferred future for your community of faith. Koster and Wagenveld write: "A healthy community of faith is rooted first of all in the character and nature of God. It understands its mission and purpose in the world and organizes its life and work to be faithful and effective in its context. None of these vital signs stands alone. It is a combination of factors that together make up a faithful and fruitful organism, the living Church of our Lord Jesus Christ. There is no magic in the number ten, but for the teaching purposes it has worked quite well in different cultural contexts in providing ideas and a language for discussing important issues in congregational life and mission." The intended audience for this book is any pastor, leader, or church member who is interest in having healthy conversations with others to strengthen the local church.

If you’ve ever had a medical check-up, did you wonder why they put a cuff around your forearm, gave it a squeeze, and made you sit still and quiet? Or why they asked you to open your mouth so they could stick a thermometer under your tongue? Or put that cold stethoscope against your chest while you took deep breaths followed by sticking a clothespin thingamabob on your finger? What’s up with all the gizmos and gadgets and why all the bother?

What’s up is that all of these instruments measure the conditions of some of the most important, life-supporting functions, or vital signs, which keep your carcass from becoming, well, a carcass. The squeezy cuff is reading your blood pressure, which indicates how strongly your blood is pumping through your pipes. The thermometer measures your core body temperature, which affects many chemical reactions in your body that supply energy for your cells. With a stethoscope, the swooshing sound of air moving in and out of your lungs can be listened to. And the clothespin doohickey tracks the amount of oxygen being carried by your blood. Vital signs are critical indicators of your body’s overall health. By tracking them as you grow and mature, these measurements can be used as a guide or reference point for when your body isn’t feeling all that great.

Now what does your blood pressure have to do with US National Parks? While human vital signs are important in evaluating your body’s health, ecological vital signs are indicators for measuring ecosystem health. An ecosystem is a community of living organisms like frogs, trees, or bacteria, and nonliving materials such as water, dirt, and rocks that are located together and interact on some level. In a healthy ecosystem, all of the living and nonliving members exist in a state of natural balance in harmony with their environment. When something new enters the community, say a strange weed or insect, or something in the environment shifts, such as the air temperature becoming warmer, the health of the ecosystem can be threatened. Monitoring ecological vital signs gives scientists a reference point or baseline of the natural condition and alerts them when there is a change. While a healthy ecosystem can continue to support all its members and adapt to change, sometimes changes are too great and members of the ecosystem become stressed and have a hard time keeping up.

Although US National Parks are some of the most protected areas on the planet, the ecological health of many of these carefully safeguarded lands is increasingly uncertain due to our rapidly changing global environment. Here we present a collection of articles about how we study and understand the health of park ecosystems by measuring and tracking the condition of ecological vital signs. This scientific data helps park managers protect the valued resources of our parks and lessen harmful impacts when change is inevitable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Americans carry on with daily life as if theyre not bothered by Americas moral decline. I know this is not true about all individuals, but it could be true of many. And, religiously, the state of Americas problems originates from peoples immoral social behaviors. The writing of this book is an attempt to bring some inspiration to those who read it. The book explores some of Americas problems from religious thought. The author took care not to point blame in any particular direction because it takes all of Americas people to bring America back to meaningful normality. He looks at what affects peoples lives most, like crime, politics, immigration, the economy, and especially discontented people. But the most compelling subject is the authors views on how Americas multiculturalism has been smoldering under the disguise of greatness. But, today, the lack of moral fortitude by many could be the catalyst that breaks her heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book's purpose was to find out how people across the United States felt about their health care. In that effort, the author interviewed hundreds of people-male or female, retired or working, ill or well, health professional or not-and was shocked by the disdain with which most of those questioned view our health care system. Their opinions are a large part of this book. What has happened to a once-great health system often proclaimed by many as best in the world? The author consulted dozens of experts present both when the system as created as well as those working in the field today. The trail of blame, in their opinions, leads to politicians, doctors, lawyers, pharmaceutical giants, HMOs, hospitals, and other health providers who they declare have lined their pockets at the public's expense. This book tries to answer the questions, "HOW DID IT HAPPEN?" and "IF OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IS BROKEN, HOW CAN WE FIX IT?"

Book excerpt: The papers published in this volume were presented at the Second International Conference on Ultra-WidebandiShort-Pulse (UWB/SP) Electromagnetics, ApriIS-7, 1994. To place this second international conference in proper perspective with respect to the first conference held during October 8-10, 1992, at Polytechnic University, some background information is necessary. As we had hoped, the first conference struck a responsive cord, both in timeliness and relevance, among the electromagnetic community 1. Participants at the first conference already inquired whether and when a follow-up meeting was under consideration. The first concrete proposal in this direction was made a few months after the first conference by Prof. A. Terzuoli of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Dayton, Ohio, who has been a strong advocate of time-domain methods and technologies. He initially proposed a follow-up time-domain workshop under AFIT auspices. Realizing that interest in this subject is lodged also at other Air Force installations, we suggested to enlarge the scope, and received in this endeavor the support of Dr. A. Nachman of AFOSR (Air Force Office of Scientific Research), Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C.

Book excerpt: 2022 Oregon Book Award Finalist A vivid journey through California's vast rural interior, The Heart of California weaves the story of historian Frank Latta's forgotten 1938 boat trip from Bakersfield to San Francisco with Aaron Gilbreath's trip retracing Latta's route by car during the 2014 drought. Latta embarked on his journey to publicize the need for dams and levees to improve flood control. Gilbreath made his own trip to profile Latta and the productive agricultural world that damming has created in the San Joaquin Valley, to describe the region's nearly lost indigenous culture and ecosystems, and to bring this complex yet largely ignored landscape to life. The Valley is home to some of California's fastest growing cities and, by some estimates, produces 25 percent of America's food. The Valley feeds too many people, and is too unique, to be ignored. To understand California, you have to understand the Valley. Mixing travel writing, historical recreations, western history, natural history, and first-person reportage, The Heart of California is a road-trip narrative about this fascinating region and its most important early documentarian.

It sheds new light on herbalism, holistic evaluation, and the age-old art of pulse-reading. "This is a monumental work, and an amazing contribution to our literature. I am always and adamantly of the mind that one's personal experience is of paramount importance, so there was a lot that I would not dream of contesting in your work. As you rightly state, nothing means anything divorced from the context of the patient's whole gestalt. There are many qualities you describe that I will be looking for in the future, or have felt and will reconsider the interpretation. Time will confirm or correct the three of you as the conversation unfolds. I am very pleased to meet Dr. Floyer and invite others to do the same." Brandt Stickley, L. Ac. Assistant Professor of Classical Chinese Medicine, National College of Naturopathic Medicine
