Book Synopsis Does God Belong in Public Schools? by : Kent Greenawalt
Download or read book Does God Belong in Public Schools? written by Kent Greenawalt and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-10 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controversial Supreme Court decisions have barred organized school prayer, but neither the Court nor public policy exclude religion from schools altogether. In this book, one of America's leading constitutional scholars asks what role religion ought to play in public schools. Kent Greenawalt explores many of the most divisive issues in educational debate, including teaching about the origins of life, sex education, and when--or whether--students can opt out of school activities for religious reasons. Using these and other case studies, Greenawalt considers how to balance the country's constitutional commitment to personal freedoms and to the separation of church and state with the vital role that religion has always played in American society. Do we risk distorting students' understanding of America's past and present by ignoring religion in public-school curricula? When does teaching about religion cross the line into the promotion of religion? Tracing the historical development of religion within public schools and considering every major Supreme Court case, Greenawalt concludes that the bans on school prayer and the teaching of creationism are justified, and that the court should more closely examine such activities as the singing of religious songs and student papers on religious topics. He also argues that students ought to be taught more about religion--both its contributions and shortcomings--especially in courses in history. To do otherwise, he writes, is to present a seriously distorted picture of society and indirectly to be other than neutral in presenting secularism and religion. Written with exemplary clarity and even-handedness, this is a major book about some of the most pressing and contentious issues in educational policy and constitutional law today.

Thomas does not take sides in the arguments; rather, he lays out the arguments, their historical and cultural contexts, and the groups that debate them and their goals. --From publisher description.
Book Synopsis Educating All God's Children by : Nicole Baker Fulgham
Download or read book Educating All God's Children written by Nicole Baker Fulgham and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children living in poverty have the same God-given potential as children in wealthier communities, but on average they achieve at significantly lower levels. Kids who both live in poverty and read below grade level by third grade are three times as likely not to graduate from high school as students who have never been poor. By the time children in low-income communities are in fourth grade, they're already three grade levels behind their peers in wealthier communities. More than half won't graduate from high school--and many that do graduate only perform at an eighth-grade level. Only one in ten will go on to graduate from college. These students have severely diminished opportunities for personal prosperity and professional success. It is clear that America's public schools do not provide a high quality public education for the sixteen million children growing up in poverty. Education expert Nicole Baker Fulgham explores what Christians can--and should--do to champion urgently needed reform and help improve our public schools. The book provides concrete action steps for working to ensure that all of God's children get the quality public education they deserve. It also features personal narratives from the author and other Christian public school teachers that demonstrate how the achievement gap in public education can be solved.

Book excerpt: "A devastating attack upon the dominance of atheism in science today." Giovanni Fazio, Senior Physicist, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics The debate over the ultimate source of truth in our world often pits science against faith. In fact, some high-profile scientists today would have us abandon God entirely as a source of truth about the universe. In this book, two professional astronomers push back against this notion, arguing that the science of today is not in a position to pronounce on the existence of God—rather, our notion of truth must include both the physical and spiritual domains. Incorporating excerpts from a letter written in 1615 by famed astronomer Galileo Galilei, the authors explore the relationship between science and faith, critiquing atheistic and secular understandings of science while reminding believers that science is an important source of truth about the physical world that God created.

Book Synopsis Helping Parents Understand Schools by : Lyndon G. Furst
Download or read book Helping Parents Understand Schools written by Lyndon G. Furst and published by IAP. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a great deal of misunderstanding about how schools in America function and what goes on in the typical classroom. Parents, even relatively young parents, perceive that public schools are just like when they attended. This faulty perception is held by a large portion of the general public. In addition a number of aspects of schooling have come under close scrutiny by critics of the public schools, resulting in a heated debate throughout the nation. It is the purpose of this book to provide parents and others who are interested in the operation of public schools an alternative way of looking at publically supported education and the issues surrounding better educational practice. The framework for this volume is the published articles of the author over the past 20 years in his weekly newspaper column, A Different Perspective. While no attempt is made to be comprehensive, the 13 chapters cover a broad range of issues facing the schools. The reader is treated to a fascinating look at the viewpoint of an experienced observer of these public institutions. The author has changed his perspective over the two decades on only a few issues. The book was written with the average reader in mind. It does not contain a large amount of educational jargon, although the issues are approached with enough depth to be useful to the professional educator. Throughout the entire volume the author maintains strong support for public schools.

After many years of falling from bad choices I started seeking God when I was invited to church through a few acquaintances. Through the seeking process things started to improve. Then through hard times I drew closer to God and God gave me dreams and talked to me in different ways, one time being audible. I felt led to share these awesome blessings with others because people do not realize that God does have time for them. He actually wants to spend time with them and help them.

Book Synopsis Raising Whosoevers to Be the Heart of Our Schools by : Dr. Teena Welborn

This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a scriptural- and experienced-based book about how to put much more love, peace, and joy back into your daily family life, yes, even while raising your children. With all the chaos in everyday life of parents and children, we need answers! It is very possible to have more enjoyment more often if you follow God's plan for raising your children. It is simple and not at all difficult. It's straightforward. This is not a book that puts things lightly, and it is not politically correct. This book is strictly God's plan for raising strong, successful, and godly children. Most importantly, it teaches you and your child to see the enemy coming a mile away. He comes to kill, steal, and destroy, and your family and children are his number one concern! There is information in this book about how parents should interact with their children and school staff to have the most success and pleasant academic experience. Some of the topics discussed in the book are about what God says about being a parent, the devil's attacks on the family, discipline at home and how it carries to the schools, and how to be a good example for your children as well as the community without being arrogant or overbearing. God is love and always will be. God should never be portrayed as haughty. Do not follow how to raise your children, by watching your friends, even some of your church friends, or the people who claim to be Christians, if they are not following biblical standards. It is so simple. It is the devil causing confusion and chaos, not God. He is peace, love, and joy. This book will tell you how to have all of this in your family if you really want that for your children.
