Book Synopsis Chinese Economic Coercion Against Taiwan by : Murray Scot Tanner
Download or read book Chinese Economic Coercion Against Taiwan written by Murray Scot Tanner and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2007 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph analyzes the political impact of the rapidly growing economic relationship between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and Taiwan and evaluates the prospects for Beijing to exploit that expanding economic relationship to employ economic coercion against Taiwan. It also identifies China's goals for applying economic pressure against Taiwan. To establish a framework for evaluating China's relative success or failure in using economic coercion against Taiwan, this work draws upon the conclusions of the large and empirically rich body of studies of economic diplomacy that have focused on economic coercion and trade sanctions. A large portion of this monograph is devoted to evaluating the cross-strait economic relationship and Taiwan's potential economic vulnerability to Chinese efforts to cut off or disrupt key aspects of that relationship. But this document also extensively analyzes the challenges that China has faced in its efforts to convert this raw, potential economic influence into effective political leverage.

Book Synopsis Taiwan Straits Standoff by : Bruce A. Elleman
Download or read book Taiwan Straits Standoff written by Bruce A. Elleman and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Nationalist defeat on the mainland in 1949, Chiang Kai-shek and his followers retreated to Taiwan, forming the Republic of China (ROC). Tensions with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) focused on control over a number of offshore islands, especially Quemoy (Jinmen) and Matsu (Mazu). Twice in the 1950s tensions peaked, during the first (1954–55) and second (1958) Taiwan Strait crises. This small body of water—often compared to the English Channel—separates the PRC and Taiwan, and has been the location for periodic military tensions, some threatening to end in war. Today, relations between the ROC and PRC depend on quelling tensions over the Taiwan Strait. This work provides a short, but highly relevant, history of the Taiwan Strait, and its significance today.

Book Synopsis Negotiating with the Enemy by : Yafeng Xia
Download or read book Negotiating with the Enemy written by Yafeng Xia and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2006-09-29 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A very good attempt to give a coherent and consistent account of the China-U.S. contacts during the Cold War.... [R]eaders will certainly gain a better understanding of this interesting and intricate history." -- Zhou Wenzhong, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Few relationships during the Cold War were as dramatic as that between the United States and China. During World War II, China was America's ally against Japan. By 1949, the two countries viewed each other as adversaries and soon faced off in Korea. For the next two decades, Beijing and Washington were bitter enemies. Negotiating with the Enemy is a gripping account of that period. On several occasions -- Taiwan in 1954 and 1958, and Vietnam in 1965 -- the nations were again on the verge of direct military confrontation. However, even as relations seemed at their worst, the process leading to a rapprochement had begun. Dramatic episodes such as the Ping-Pong diplomacy of spring 1971 and Henry Kissinger's secret trip to Beijing in July 1971 paved the way for Nixon's historic 1972 meeting with Mao.
Book Synopsis Taiwan's Informal Diplomacy and Propaganda by : Gary D. Rawnsley
Download or read book Taiwan's Informal Diplomacy and Propaganda written by Gary D. Rawnsley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-03-28 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do governments that do not enjoy formal diplomatic relations use propaganda? When a government is denied recognition by the international community, it must explore every avenue of publicity available to project its image and policies. For such actors, propaganda can become diplomacy out of necessity. The Republic of China on Taiwan is such a government, and its predicament is the subject of this book. It discusses the relationship between diplomacy and propaganda from an exciting new perspective, illustrated by a fascinating case-study.
