Book excerpt: The Description of ‘The Dance Of Darkness’ ‘The Dance Of Darkness’ has been authored by Muhammad Shanazar, an internationally recognized poet, who has got several awards and recognition. A poet writes but it is the critic who explores the world created by him. ‘The Dance Of Darkness’ is a poem which has been suggested for the title and in the title poem images of horror and devastation have been recreated and depicted, the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki went through during the use of nuclear bombs, in August 1945. The poem ‘The Dance Of Darkness’ concludes with the lines: ‘Who are these who move like ghosts, Charred bony figures with hanging shreds, Lamenting upon the horrible deed And despised nature sighs and sobs That who knows when time takes turn, Who knows moments of calm and peace, Might contain the centuries of sorrows.’ ‘The Dance Of Darkness’ in general consists of majority of the poems which refer to cupidity, recklessness, injustice, callousness of international organizations, terrorism and horrors of war, in fact these all collectively cast Darkness and it dances around the world. The book is not merely a book of poetry but it contains cries of the poet who admonishes the leading heads humanity about the unheeded perils which humanity may confront with the total annihilation of human existence on the planet. The poems from serial No. 69 to 133 deal with the theme of peace and war, rather they are poems against war, they preach for the world free of violence, weapons and wars. In ‘The Dance Of Darkness’ some poems pertain to nostalgia, in these poems the poet expressed mixed sentiments and memories sweet and sour through which he lived in. Poem from serial No. 07 to 29 are nostalgic ones. The most striking feature of ‘The Dance Of Darkness, is the expression of some mind baffling spiritual experiences that the poet underwent. There had been time in his life when he went through very mystical experiences and he kept them concealed lest he should be branded lunatic, in these poems he share the same experiences with intellectuals of the world. The readers may find apt substance regarding human soul, body and mind and their relationship with the cosmos. What often happened to him, while he was lying on the bed, he felt something departing from his physical existence, then that began to fly with the incredible speed with all senses and went higher and higher farther than the distances of many light years, whatever he saw, he expressed in some of his poems without exaggeration. (See poems from the Suspended Mountain to Omnipresence Of Breeze). ‘The Dance Of Darkness’ also contains poems on patriotism, love, social and political issues and these poems have awesome endings. Critical study of these poems imparts the students of literature maturity and a sense of amplification to their minds; it has a vast diction and crystal clear imagery replete with similes metaphors. Thorough study of the book certainly improves the reader’s taste, intellect, and understanding of poetry as well.

Book excerpt: Having one foot in North America and one in Europe, the author inevitably, compares these two continents, their surroundings, their people, and their modus vivendi. The interpretation of happenings on these continents as they relate to one life's adventure is the scope of this work, which is, before everything else, a collage of personal biography, illuminated by flashes of the remarkable historical moments preceding the emigration. There are, moreover, interpretations of impressions colored with romantic, enchanting mysticism, and alternatively, subjective impressions of immigrants who came to America to find a better life and expected, to some extent, to find a promised land on a platter. In either case, impressions are based on predispositions of what immigrants from the old country envisioned American to be like. However, gratia is not a prerequisite; it does not exist in the meaning of emi, nor immi gratia. Is this memoir an unprejudiced evaluation and objective notation of experiences as they were, or a biased overflow of emotions, ridicule and sarcasm, or delight and adornment? What is the difference between autobiography, memoir, and diary, versus a fictitious, rather historical novel in the first place? A degree of deviation from factual reality? A conglomerate relatively dry when transferred onto paper, this cacophony, without regard to categorization, may enlighten the mind of one American, or one potential immigrant, by informing or reforming the picture of the mirage of a once-magical New World or the romanticism of the Old One.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the cultural and literary influence of Christina Rossetti has recently been widely acknowledged, the belatedness of this critical attention has left wide gaps in our understanding of her poetic contribution. Often focusing solely on her early work and neglecting her later volumes, many critics minimized her relevance by measuring her stature through either her early poems or her relationships with well-known Victorian literary figures. In Christina Rossetti: The Patience of Style, Constance W. Hassett argues against this diminishment by reopening Rossetti's canon, challenging both critics and readers to trade their silent appreciation of her most familiar verse for a patient and active scrutiny of her body of work, which contains some of the finest lyric poetry of the nineteenth century. Keeping her primary focus on the poems themselves, Hassett traces Rossetti's career through her five poetry collections, Goblin Market and Other Poems (1862), The Prince's Progress and Other Poems (1866), Sing-Song: A Nursery Rhyme Book (1872), A Pageant and Other Poems (1881), and Verses (1893). In a comprehensive account of Rossetti's evolving style and genre, Hassett analyzes the strengths and failures of the poetry, its attention to the resources of rhythm and the shifts of diction, its momentum and reserve, and the rationale for its revision. The book also explores Rossetti's innovative poetry for children, her daring reconfiguration of religion and poetry in a late-life commentary on the Apocalypse, and the influences both of female precursors she admired and outgrew and of the male circle of Pre-Raphaelite poets. For art historians of the Pre-Raphaelites, scholars of women's writing and gender studies, students of children's literature, and researchers in religious studies, not to mention readers in Victorian poetry, Christina Rossetti: The Patience of Style will serve as an indispensable and eye-opening guide.

Book excerpt: Back to Methuselah, by Bernard Shaw, is a play where the author expresses his reflections on the topic of religion and atheism, science, politics, and history. The preface of the book deals with popular thoughts, institutions, and most sacred beliefs. Shaw gives a history of the different beliefs towards the nature of a human and the universe. He goes on with his own mental struggles and evolution. Shaw criticizes the church and its followers, whom he calls idolaters. He says that their superstitions and legends actually deter people from the divine. But he criticizes atheism too and reflects on how the atheists manipulate the Darwin teachings of evolution.
