This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is highly topical. The shift from the multilateral WTO negotiations to bilateral and regional Free Trade Agreements has been going on for some time, but it is bound to accelerate after the WTO Doha round of negotiations is now widely regarded as a failure. However, there is a particular regional angle to this topic as well. After concluding that further progress in the Doha round was unlikely, Pacific Rim nations recently have progressed with the negotiations of a greatly expanded Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement that includes industrialised economies and developed countries such as the United States, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, recently emerged economies such as Singapore, but also several developing countries in Asia and Latin America such as Malaysia and Vietnam. US and EU led efforts to conclude FTAs with Asia-Pacific nations are also bound to accelerate again, after a temporary slowdown in the negotiations following the change of government in the United States and the expiry of the US President’s fast-track negotiation authority. The book will provide an assessment of these dynamics in the world’s fastest growing region. It will look at the IP chapters from a legal perspective, but also put the developments into a socio-economic and political context. Many agreements in fact are concluded because of this context rather than for purely economic reasons or to achieve progress in fields like IP law. The structure of the book follows an outline that groups countries into interest alliances according to their respective IP priorities. This ranges from the driving forces of the EU, US and Japan, via Asia-Pacific resource-rich but IP poor economies such as Australia and New Zealand, recently emerged economies with strong IP systems such as Singapore and Korea to leading developing countries such as China and India and ‘second tier industrializing economies’ such as Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout its history, Thailand has shown remarkable resiliency, adaptability, and creativity in responding to serious threats and crises, and this since much earlier times when it was known as Siam. This book, while focusing on the modern period, does reach back to ancient kingdoms but also shows the impressive rise to a modern democracy, although still endowed with a king, and even more impressively, an economic “tiger.” Moreover, it has become a prime tourist destination and is thus known to vast numbers of foreigners as a sort of “instant Asia.” The Historical Dictionary of Thailand, now in its third edition, covers this amazing story in various ways. First, the chronology traces the most significant events from year to year. The introduction then provides a good overview of the land and people, the history and traditions, and where it now seems to be heading. The dictionary, which by now has hundreds of detailed and cross-referenced entries, looks more closely at important persons, places, institutions and events as well as more generally its politics, economy, society, culture and religion. So this is an excellent reference work not only for scholars but many others who have visited the country and were fascinated by it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Patricia Cheesman's understanding and commitment to the textiles arts of Laos and Thailand in particular has, over the intervening years, produced a wealth of resources for the newcomer and the better informed, for the art historian and for those interested in the practical aspects of weaving and dyeing. Of course the two cannot truly be separated, but Patricia Cheesman's background as a practising crafts person illuminates her publications. When she began to write on Lao and Tai textiles, there was little available on the topic. Today there is a wealth of material--in Thai and English for those seeking to understand something of the technical and cultural foundations of arguably the region's most dynamic art form. There is, however, always a place for a publication such as this, born out of a long involvement with the textiles and their creators. As she has done before, Patricia Cheesman concentrates on bringing clarity, recognition and cultural understanding to yet another set of the region's traditional textiles in an engaging and accessible style." --from the Foreword by Robyn Maxwell, senior curator of Asian art, National Gallery of Australia

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siho and Naga are the most powerful mythological figures in Lao tradition manifested in their textiles. This book focuses on the history and culture of the creators of exquisitely hand woven fabrics that have attracted textile connoisseurs all over the world. The study leads not only to rare weaving techniques, patterns and natural dyes, but also to a vast ethnic diversity of people who used to live self sufficiently of their natural environment in rural areas or under royal patronage in ancient cities. Textiles have always been an integral part of the social and spiritual life of Lao people who now, after a devastating war, are challenged to come to terms with tourism, cash, and global market strategies. Siho and Naga shall raise awareness for urgent educational reform countrywide and encourage local and international preservers of Lao culture to continue their efforts to the benefit of Lao's young generation, who eventually will grasp the value of their own textiles in order to set them against cheap imports.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Việt Nam is the home of more than fifty ethnic minorities--such as the Cham and Thai--many of which have distinctive clothing and weaving traditions linked to antiquity. The tight-fitting tunic called ao dai, widely recognized as a national symbol, has its roots in the country's 2,000-year history of textiles. Beginning with silk production in the Bronze Age cultures of the Red River, this book covers textiles in Việt Nam--including bark-cloth, kapok and hemp--through the centuries of Chinese rule in the north, a number of independent feudal societies and the brief period of French colonial rule.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey with fifteen scholars to Southeast Asia and neighbouring countries to discover the hidden meanings behind traditional textiles. Throughout Asia, textiles have played an important role in concepts of power and kingship and are also closely associated with shamanistic, Buddhist and Islamic beliefs. The papers presented in this work represent knowledge and research of leading scholars from around the world who participated in The James H W Thompson Foundation symposium in August, 2005. Diana K Myers compares Bhutanese and Southeast Asian textiles, Gillian Green covers Cambodian hangings, John Guy, Roy Hamilton and Robyn Maxwell discuss different aspects of Indonesian textiles, while Susan Conway investigates Shamanistic practices among the Shan. Barbara and David Fraser, Vibha Joshi and Piriya Krairiksh research the textiles of three other minority groups in Myanmar, while Patricia Cheesman and Linda McIntosh take us on a journey to Laos. For Thailand, Leedom Lefferts and Suriya Smutkupt look at links between Buddhism and textiles, while Thirabhand Chandrachareon discusses royal Thai brocades. Finally, Michael Howard shows how the Tai peoples of Vietnam use textiles to denote status and religion. 300 colour illustrations
